How many consumers even think twice when offered one of those ´loyalty rewards´ cards by a store?
It´s really a matter of consumer stalking... It´s very valuable to marketing that they have contact info on you (to streamline their efforts to target people for advertising and to make resource planning possible, by projecting demand patterns). That´s why companies are willing to offer their ´loyal´ customers such good discounts.
Just say no.

I´m a lawyer who deals with data privacy issues as a routine part of my job, and the laws are already maddening and ineffective. Unfortunately, this type of data availability and news reports that can´t even report it well end up causing people to enact even more laws that have even less effectiveness but make it harder for honest companies to comply and also cost them lots of money with no societal benefit.

Years ago, I read a story about a man who was suing a store because he was injured by a hazard in their store or parking lot. The store used the information about his purchases compiled by his use of the loyalty card, to try to claim he was drunk, because he occasionally bought beer.
When one of our children was applying for a credit card because they were going to a distant college, the card issuer called our home for verification, and inquired what college. When told which one, he said, oh, let me check, they´re in our data bank, and verified our child´s enrollment.
There is no privacy any more.

If you aren´t using cash, you should be.
Order a copy of your credit report.
When you check out and they ask your zip code, use a different one and never the same one. Those coupons the register spits out are based on your shopping.

#7 - 20 years ago the president of Sun Microsystems stated, point blank, "There is no privacy. Get over it." If it wasn´t true then, it´s certainly true now.
#8 - People who charge a purchase need to be careful about using random zip codes. Many places (e.g. gas stations) need the zip you give to match the zip on your card.

In a rambling jailhouse press conference, the 21-year-old Stewart said he committed 14 robberies in four days so he could get his share of the “silver and gold” that he feels is his due. The interview, one of a series given to U.S. television networks Monday night, was the first she has given about the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

RUSH: Folks, I don´t know how else to categorize this. We are living in a dying country. I don´t know how else to categorize what´s happening -- 88,000 new jobs. The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce. Ninety million. People not in the labor force grew by 663,000, and now 90 million. That´s the labor force participation rate. This is 1979 levels.
