| S oren Dayton and Rob Bluey — two conservative tech geniuses — talked me into joining Twitter during a lunch Ed Morrissey organized at an Iraqi restaurant in Minneapolis during the 2008 Republican convention. Life hasn´t been the same since. Of course, I can hardly claim to be an early adopter. But by virtue of signing up in 2008 (my original handle was @MattLewis01), I was at least well ahead of the curve. And soon enough, I became not only a proponent of Twitter, but also a sort of evangelist. It´s hard to even fathom now, but at the time, few journalists were really using Twitter.

I think Twitter must be a way to anonymously communicate the meanest, nastiest things you can in 140 characters or less.
I prefer commenting in a place that has moderators who will kick out people who behave badly.

Comment sections, blogs, and , I think Twitter (I haven´t joined) seem to mainly provide a platform for anyone to make ad hominum attacks.

Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell is accused of killing newborn babies at his filthy clinic, and it was apparently very lucrative work. Gosnell allegedly "snipped" the spinal cords of seven newborns after performing illegal late-term abortions. Prosecutors believe he killed many other fetuses in their third-trimester and destroyed related records. Gosnell is also accused of running an absolutely filthy clinic — known as the Women´s Medical Society — that had untrained staff give at least one patient a fatal dose of the painkiller Demerol.

As we once again face the specter of illegal alien amnesty, and the permanent Democratic majority it will guarantee, it is critical to understand how the Left plays. In the 2014 budget he announced last week, Obama proposed a more accurate way of calculating the inflation rate for annual cost-of-living increases in Social Security. It’s a technical change in pursuit of honesty and good government. And if adopted, it would cause benefits to grow more slowly, though almost imperceptibly so. Republican leaders in Congress ought to be delighted since they had “championed”—Obama’s word—the idea in the first place. Then came the catch. The president’s price for adopting this gentle reform was hundreds of billions in new tax increases.

PHOENIX -- Arizona authorities say a package addressed to Sheriff Joe Arpaio discovered in a northern Arizona mailbox would have exploded if opened, leading to serious injuries or death. Maricopa County Chief Deputy Jerry Sheridan made the comment Friday at a news conference in Phoenix. He said investigators are trying to locate one person who may have been involved in mailing the package addressed to his boss. About a decade ago, Glenn McGovern began studying targeted attacks on members of the criminal justice community, including judges, prosecutors and police officers. The former SWAT officer had joined the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office in California as an investigator. He saw a need for improved training for the office’s protective unit, he said. “I started researching the kind of attacks so that I could understand them better and we could develop training in order to respond to this type of violence,” McGovern said this week. “And then I also do the threat and risk assessments.

French Chief Rabbi Gilles Bernheim handed in his resignation on Thursday after he admitted that he had committed plagiarism and claimed unearned academic titles, French newspaper Le Figaro reported. The board met in Paris to hear his decision, and lauded his decision as "courageous." Bernheim is usually introduced as an “agrégé,” a sort of “doctor,” a prestigious academic title obtained by civil servants in competitive tests. In Who’s Who, in biographies and in an official book of the Consistoire central des Juifs de France, which administers religious services, the title agrégé of philosophy always appears under Bernheim’s name.

Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends. I’ve been writing about media coverage of abortion for many years. And so have many others. If you haven’t read David Shaw’s “Abortion Bias Seeps Into The News,” published in the Los Angeles Times back in 1990, you should.
