| Back when Mubarak was clinging to power and the Tahrir Square rioting was intensifying, I cautioned that it would be foolish for the West to assume that the Egyptian military — principal recipient of tens of billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars over the last 40 years — would step in and stop the country from falling into the grip of Islamists. The Egyptian military is a reflection of Egyptian society which, as we have now seen in election after election, is dominated by Islamists. This morning I heard someone on Fox actually say that in essence the Egyptian military was rather reliable regarding these jets. Like Mr. McCarthy says: "Why would they step in now when they are under the command of Islamist generals chosen by the Brotherhood" when they didn´t under Mubarak. Of course we knew not to trust the Muslim Brotherhood, in spite of all the glowing reports of the Arab Spring from the regime and the media.

You mean "relying on the PURGED Egyptian military." I believe Morsi has eliminated the secularists from the top brass. If the military intervenes at this time, it would likely be to crush any rebellion against the Morsi dictatorship.

Controversial gun legislation cleared a key Senate hurdle Thursday, as lawmakers voted 68-31 to start debate on the package which includes expanded background checks and new penalties for gun trafficking. Senate Democrats, joined by a few Republicans, were able to overcome an attempted filibuster by more than a dozen senators opposed to the current bill. Those senators could still slow-walk the debate, but the Senate will ultimately begin votes on amendments -- one of which is considered crucial to winning support for a final vote.
