Russia scraps US anti-drug
accord after 10 years

BBC News, by Staff

Original Article

Posted By:earlybird, 1/30/2013 10:16:07 AM

The Russian government has abandoned an agreement with the US on fighting crime and the drugs trade, in an apparent sign of worsening relations. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said the decade-long agreement no longer addressed "realities" and had "exhausted its potential". (Snip) Russia has been grappling for years with a huge heroin abuse problem, exacerbated by its proximity to drug-trafficking routes from Afghanistan. It has accused the US of failing to use its influence in Afghanistan to tackle the trade effectively.

That RESET button worked wonders, didn´t it!

The entire middle east is on fire, our relations with Russia are kaput-sky, and our traditional allies are left up the creek without a paddle.

Thank you Hillary.

Did EPA´s Fake Spy Shut

Wall Street Journal, by James Freeman    Original Article

In his ongoing investigation of fake EPA spy John Beale, Sen. David Vitter (R., La.) is increasingly focused on Beale´s role in leading a 1997 rewrite of federal rules on air quality. Beale not only forced a quick conclusion based on questionable data. He also pressured the Clinton Administration´s Office of Management and Budget to stop criticizing the new rules, known as the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for Ozone and Particulate Matter. In a draft report, Sen. Vitter also places the Beale rules in context: "Since the 1997 standards were issued, EPA has steadfastly refused to facilitate independent

Paris Restricts Car Usage to Combat Smog

France will restrict auto use in Paris beginning Monday in an effort to reduce dangerous pollution levels in the country’s capital. Paris’ high number of private car drivers and France’s diesel subsidies make the city more susceptible to high levels of smog than other European capitals, and a recent week of a warm, sunny weather has made the air quality worse, Reuters reports. Paris has 147 micrograms of particulate matter per cubic meter of air, compared with 81 in Berlin and 79.7 in London. The plan being introduced Monday calls for drivers to only use their cars on alternate days

Why this week was ´screaming siren´

Christian Science Monitor, by Mark Sappenfield    Original Article

Democrats have turned on the "screaming siren" this week as they grow increasingly worried that this year´s midterm elections could be a replay of the 2010 Republican sweep. Several factors have played into the Democratic skittishness, including President Obama´s persistently low approval ratings and the emergence of two viable Republican Senate candidates in states Democrats had hoped to hold fairly easily this fall. But it was the volume on the doomsday chatter went up noticeably with the victory of Republican Richard Jolly over Democrat Alex Sink in the special election for Florida´s 13th Congressional District this Tuesday.

SEPANG, Malaysia — A signaling system was disabled on the missing Malaysia Airlines jet before a pilot spoke to Malaysian air traffic control without hinting at any trouble, a senior Malaysian official said Sunday, shedding new light on a question important to determining why the plane turned far off its planned route and disappeared over a week ago with 239 people onboard. Malaysia’s defense minister, Hishammuddin Hussein, offered the detail a day after the country’s prime minister, Najib Razak, ended days of hesitant, sometimes contradictory government statements about the Malaysia Airlines plane that disappeared over a week ago. Facing international pressure, the U.S. government said Friday it will give up control over important technical aspects of the Internet. The Commerce Department will no longer oversee the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers, a nonprofit group that manages the Internet´s address system. Larry Strickling, the assistant secretary of Commerce for communications and information, said the "global Internet community" will have the final say over the database of names and addresses that allows computers around the world to communicate with each other. The Internet was invented in the United States, and the country has long maintained a central role. But as the

Moscow (AFP) - A United States surveillance drone has been intercepted above the Ukranian region of Crimea, a Russian state arms and technology group said Friday. It was possible to break the link with US operators with complex radio-electronic" technology, said Rostec in a statement. The drone fell "almost intact into the hands of self-defence forces" added Rostec, which said it had manufactured the equipment used to down the aircraft, but did not specify who was operating it. Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday endorsed a proposal that would result in shorter prison sentences for many nonviolent drug traffickers, saying the change would rein in runaway federal prison costs and create a fairer criminal justice system. Holder´s backing for a U.S. Sentencing Commission proposal to lower the guideline penalties is part of a broader Justice Department effort to lessen punishment for nonviolent drug dealers. He has been pressing to ease long mandatory sentences and has called for greater discretion for judges in sentencing. "This overreliance on incarceration is not just financially unsustainable, it comes with human and moral costs that

The College Board´s March 5 announcement that the SAT college-admissions exam will undergo a significant overhaul in 2016 has generated no shortage of commentary, some of it praising the changes as a "democratization" of the test. The College Board says it is expanding its outreach to low-income students and shifting from testing abstract-reasoning skills to evidence-based reading, writing and mathematical skills acquired in high school. Ultimately, the exam will look a lot more like the ACT, which has been taking away the SAT´s market share in recent years. The goal, according to College Board President and CEO David Coleman, is to

Police are investigating the possibility that the pilot of missing Flight MH370 hijacked his own aircraft in a bizarre political protest. The Mail on Sunday has learned that Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah was an ‘obsessive’ supporter of Malaysia’s opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim. And hours before the doomed flight left Kuala Lumpur it is understood 53-year-old Shah attended a controversial trial in which Ibrahim was jailed for five years. Campaigners say the politician, the key challenger to Malaysia’s ruling party, was the victim of a long-running smear campaign and had faced trumped-up charges. Police sources have confirmed that Shah was a vocal political activist

By now it’s settled on most people, including Democrats, that the loss of Alex Sink to David Jolly in Florida’s 13th Congressional District was, in the words of the New York Times, “devastating” to Democrats. It’s a district Ms. Sink carried in her unsuccessful race for governor against Rick Scott, a district that Barack Obama carried in his two elections, and a district that demographically now favors Democrats. In addition, Ms. Sink raised more money and ran a better campaign than Jolly. Even Bill Clinton lent his efforts to her campaign. And yet she lost. What should particularly alarm Democrats is

One of our planes is missing. That’s basically all we know for certain right now, but more than a week after losing contact with flight MH370, there are a lot of other suggestive bits of information. Unfortunately, a lot of it is, as usual, being reported by news readers who barely understand that you don’t want to keep the pointy end aimed at the ground for an extended time. Here’s some things we do know now. The first indication of trouble was when the transponder stopped responding to radar. This is the point where newspeople are saying it “dropped off the radar,”
