An enclave of Pittsburgh fans in Oregon? The surprising map that shows how the country is divided over the NFL

| New York University PhD candidate Sean Taylor has published a series of new maps based on Facebook figures that show a surprising social and geographical breakdown of NFL fans. About 35 million people on Facebook have ´liked´ one of the 32 NFL teams, or roughly one out of every ten Americans. Those numbers now show a divided country loaded with random fan clusters and holdouts. Not since the Civil War has the nation and states looked so fractured.´Technically this was all quite trivial, mostly just aggregating users by teams and geography,´

As odd as the map distributions appear, really no surprises here (except for the Oregon Steelers fans). The distribution follows a regional loyalty pattern including TV coverage availability for the regular season. When it´s down to the two Super Bowl teams, it follows AFC and NFC loyalties.

An HBO executive is among a group of new appointees to key Obama administration posts. James Costos, HBO´s vp global licensing and retail, consumer marketing, and a key fundraiser for the president, has been named ambassador to Spain, the Obama administration announced Friday. In addition to Costos, Obama nominated two other Hollywood political insiders, with more nominations from the entertainment industry expected to follow. If confirmed by the Senate, John Emerson, the longtime Southern California DNC chief and financial executive, will be ambassador to Germany; Obama campaign finance chief and former studio exec Rufus Gifford will be

WASHINGTON— As President Barack Obama pushes an ambitious agenda to liberalize global trading, political trade wars already are forming, and they´re with fellow Democrats rather than with Republicans, his usual antagonists. Obama is promoting free-trade proposals with Europe and Asia that could affect up to two-thirds of all global trade. The ambitious deals would reduce or eliminate tariffs and other trade barriers. But there´s trouble ahead for both the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership — at the negotiating table and from Congress. The deal with Europe will be a top item

Before an adoring crowd of religious conservatives, Sarah Palin mocked recent scandals swirling around the Obama administration, performing her own version of a Saturday Night Live parody. “They have this skit where they do this fake newscast, and they read this completely absurd news report and finish it with an incredulous ‘Really?’’” Palin told the audience Saturday afternoon at a meeting of the Faith and Freedom Coalition. “As in, our government spied on every single one of your phone calls but it couldn’t find two pot -smoking deadbeat Bostonians with a hotline to terrorist central in Chechnya.”

MIAMI – While the Miami Heat tied the 2013 NBA Finals at 2-2 Thursday night, outside of South Florida, the San Antonio Spurs are the overwhelming selection for Americans to win the NBA championship. According to Public Policy Polling, 32 percent of those surveyed wanted the Spurs to win the Finals while 20 percent selected the Heat. The polling came as part of a larger poll dealing with other political issues of the day. PPP broke the numbers down further and found that among voters who supported Barack Obama, the Spurs were favored by a 28-25 percent margin,

“DC is one hot mess,” Sarah Palin told the attendees of Ralph Reed’s Faith and Freedom Coalition conference on Saturday morning, trashing Obama over a variety of scandals, promoting libertarians over the GOP establishment, and encouraging tea party movements. “Something more is going on than your garden-variety government corruption, or even illegality,” Palin said. “As the left would say, this is shaping up to be a teachable moment. What’s going on says something fundamental about our relationship to our government.” “The scandals infecting this city, they are a symptom of a bigger disease, and it doesn’t matter if it’s

A state panel restored the license of the doctor who is medical director of a group of abortion clinics accused by state regulators of putting women´s health at risk, while the licenses of two other physicians who worked at the clinics remain suspended. The Maryland Board of Physicians this week reinstated the license of Dr. Mansour G. Panah of Associates in OB/GYN Care, saying that evidence he presented at a hearing showed that he poses "no imminent danger to public health or safety." The board, however, upheld the suspension of Dr. Michael A. Basco, another physician

Washington- Gov. Rick Perry of Texas made light at a major gathering of conservatives on Saturday of his sometimes rocky 2012 run for the White House. "I´ve learned a little bit about humility particularly on national television," he quipped to laughter at the Faith and Freedom Coalition´s annual conference, which is one of the largest gatherings of social conservatives. A few lines later in his faith-themed speech, Perry noted a critique of "St. Peter, whose mouth sometimes ran faster than his brain. Let me tell you, I can relate to Peter."

Two small islands of color in a sea of cindered remains, firefighters incredibly managed to protect these houses from the fierce flames of the destructive Black Forest wildfire near Colorado Springs. Yet, while these homes were miraculously saved, nearly 500 other properties have been destroyed and two people have been killed by the worst blaze in Colorado state history. The fire began Tuesday during record-setting heat and tinder-dry conditions. On Friday firefighters advanced, expanding containment lines and lifting evacuation orders for many anxious residents. Many returned to their devastated homes for the first time today

Two defendants in military sexual assault cases cannot be punitively discharged, if found guilty, because of “unlawful command influence” derived from comments made by President Barack Obama, a judge ruled in a Hawaii military court this week. Navy Judge Cmdr. Marcus Fulton ruled during pretrial hearings in two sexual assault cases — U.S. vs. Johnson and U.S. vs. Fuentes — that comments made by Obama as commander in chief would unduly influence any potential sentencing, according to a court documents obtained by Stars and Stripes.

In the midst of the eruption of near-daily scandals involving the Obama administration, let us not forget that until just a few months ago, Hillary Clinton was the most significant persona within that administration besides the president himself. Let us not also forget that notwithstanding the scandal-grenades going off all around us, Mrs. Clinton diligently plans her run for the presidency, even while several of those scandals are obviously and entirely her responsibility, exposing the State Department during her tenure as an utter sewer of corruption, cronyism, and fatal incompetence.

She said: "We need women who are at the head of a boardroom, like at the head of the White House, at the head of kind of major scientific enterprises so that little girls everywhere can then think, you know what? There is no evidence that the FBI has contacted a single tea party group in its criminal investigation of the Internal Revenue Service, according to the groups the IRS abused. “We have not been contacted by any federal investigative agency and, to date, none of our clients have been contacted or interviewed by the FBI,” Jay Sekulow of the American Center for Law and Justice told The Daily Caller on Thursday. The ACLJ has filed suit against the IRS on behalf of 25 conservative groups, with additional groups being added in the next couple weeks, according to a spokesman.

N ot long ago, conservatives like myself were thrilled to find out that Fox News, often portrayed as the mouthpiece of the conservative movement, had parted ways with former governor of Alaska (and quitter) Sarah Palin. This was truly a cause for celebration. Those of us devoted to building a conservative movement capable of winning elections had come to view the former governor as the symbol of everything, and I do mean everything, wrong with the modern conservative movement. But now, Roger Ailes has rehired her. And in so doing, Ailes has issued a painful reminder that he cares far more

Over the years, I’ve read plenty of claims that we’re witnessing a “crackup” of liberals or conservatives (or sometimes both at the same time). Normally, I react by rolling my eyes. For me, “crackup” claims are a almost always hack way of expressing unjustified triumphalism. But now I think I see a crackup. Given the scandal-a-week Obama administration, you might think that the crackup, if any, is looming on the left. But that would be to ignore the left’s tendency to march more or less in lockstep through any scandal or storm. No, the crackup I see coming is among conservatives.

SAN FRANCISCO - Lauren Grey didn´t think much about the gender recorded on her Illinois driver´s license until she went to test-drive a new car. Although she had been living as a woman for months and easily obtained a license with her new name and a picture reflecting her feminine appearance, Grey´s ID still identified her as male, puzzling the salesmen and prompting uncomfortable questions. "They are like, ´This doesn´t match.´ Then you have to go into the story: ´I was born male, but now I´m not,´" said Grey, 38, a graphic designer living in suburban Chicago.

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush (R) argued Wednesday that the United States should pass immigration reform because the U.S. economy needs the labor of young immigrants, and immigrants are “more fertile.” “Immigrants create far more businesses than native-born Americans,” Bush said at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to the Majority conference. “Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population. Immigrants create an engine of economic prosperity.” Bush said immigrants are an advantage that the United States has over China, Europe and Japan, which don’t have the same

When the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) was being debated, proponents were accused of saddling Americans with inferior and expensive health care while keeping generous coverage for themselves at taxpayer expense. To rebut that allegation and build confidence in the bill, a provision was added mandating that members of Congress – and their staff members – get there coverage through the new exchange system the bill set up. Now that the time to sign up for exchange coverage is nearing, a Democratic member, Rep. John Larson (D., Conn.), is saying that

The IRS hadn’t spoken four sentences about its targeting of conservative groups before it blamed “our line people in Cincinnati.” Those were the words of Lois Lerner on May 10, when she acknowledged the misconduct in an answer to a question planted at an American Bar Association conference. In a phone session with reporters later that day, she famously admitted that she is not good at math. It turns out that she is not good at geography, either. The locus of the IRS scandal, it has steadily emerged, is not in Cincinnati but in Washington, where lawyers and supervisors

Evidence suggests this party performed all access remotely using Attkisson’s accounts. While no malicious code was found, forensic analysis revealed an intruder had executed commands that appeared to involve search and exfiltration of data.

Though noting that his determination to take action is on the tardy side, congressional Republicans said they’re ready to work with the White House on helping Syrian civilians in the fight versus Bashar al-Assad. “Nearly two years ago, President Obama called for Syrian dictator Bashar Assad to go. A year later, the president laid down a clear red line, threatening serious consequences if Assad used or transferred chemical weapons.
