Bipartisan immigration plan
faces deep skepticism

Washington Examiner, by Byron York

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 1/29/2013 7:26:30 AM

"On day one of our bill, the people without status who are not criminals or security risks will be able to live and work here legally."With those words, Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer, who moments earlier had heaped effusive praise on Republican colleagues standing with him in the Senate press room, made it infinitely more difficult for many GOP lawmakers to sign on to the bipartisan immigration proposal put forward by the so-called Gang of Eight

The borders will be now "under funded" to cripple efforts to stem the tide. Just like the budget agreement, taxes first, forget the rest. Visas should come with ankle bracelets.

Would someone, anyone ask one (1) simple question, please? Ask the wise solons "WHY". Why do we need more mouths to feed from our larders? Why must we share our scarce resources with them? Do we get ANYTHING of true value in return? We cannot take care of ourselves let alone tens of millions more of needful folks.

Obama will load his plan with poison pills so the GOP will reject it and then he´ll use exe. powers. One of the main stumbling blocks right out of the gate is verifying that the border is sealed. Obama doesn´t want that nor does he want anybody deported regardless if they have been already and are hanging around.

Obama doesn´t want along dragged out process for people to become citizens which I believe the senate plan calls for.

No matter how many laws you pass, obama has to enforce them and he´s more likely than not to ignore them.

What Democrat Sen Charles Schumer actually meant was: "On day one of our bill, the people without status who are not criminals or security risks will be able to live, work and vote here legally." The voting part was missing from his initial statement.

Why do these 8 pompous, TV seeking senators care so much about illegals? There are over 300 million citizens in this country yet the 11 million+ illegals get all the attention. Why?

#2, the answer is the "wise solons" will do anything for votes to retain power. Bet you already knew the answer.

Reply 6 - Posted by: planetgeo, 1/29/2013 7:56:59 AM     (No. 9145769)

It´s incredible that the Republicans are willingly walking right into this trap. Once this is approved, the Democrats won´t even have to cheat to win every future election. They will have permanently added 11 million votes to the D column. If you want to see what America will look like then, take a look at California. We have been invaded and overwhelmed in our schools, hospitals, legal system, and way of life. Our taxes are off the charts. Those of us who work have become tax slaves to pay for all the free services the invasion force is now voting for themselves.

Those Republicans who believe that voting for this bill will result in winning the votes of these illegal immigrants are complete fools.

The president ignored the Simpson-Bowles commission when it comes to fiscal reform. Now we get another commission to tell us if the border is really secure?

How about those on the path to citizenship NEVER get a chance to vote? Sorry, but the Dems want the votes, that´s all this is about. Let´s see if they would pass a bill that says even if they become legal, they can´t vote. I´ll bet that wouldn´t fly.

Exactly #2 - Why? Why are some so eager to legalize millions of third world peasants illiterate in their native tongue who will only vote Democrat? Are people in this country so lazy they can´t mow their own lawns, clean their own houses, etc?

As for Sen. Rubio - shooting star.

Reply 9 - Posted by: Periwinkel, 1/29/2013 8:32:00 AM     (No. 9145839)

This comprehensive immigration reform package has way too many moving parts. First they must do this, then they must do this, and then they must complete this and finally go to the back of the line all the while learning to speak English. Then we will get around to closing the border in a year or two.

Too, too complicated——like so many things designed, written and passed by modern congresses.

And, last but not least, Chucky-Babes is a liberal, Democrat snake!

Reply 10 - Posted by: iamtinman, 1/29/2013 8:32:22 AM     (No. 9145841)

Why shouldn´t we be skeptical? This "plan" sounds exactly like all the previous plans, none of which worked except for the additional democrat voters. The big winners will be american businesses who can hire foreign professionals with HB1 visas for far less money than american citizens would demand. It´s another taxpayer ripoff.

Reply 11 - Posted by: antiquegolf, 1/29/2013 8:35:22 AM     (No. 9145852)

GOP is no better than dims. They are members of the ruling class elite. GOP is also stupid because
mexicans, especially the newest waves of them, are an entitlement class. They want free stuff and are a secure democrat voting block. Assimilation is a myth. They are mexicans who operate somewhere between no loyalty to USA and resentment of it. Therefore, amnesty won´t garner even one hispanic Republican voter. An amnesty agreement actually represents a net loss to Republicans because guys like me will reregister in protest as independents or libertarians.

Reply 12 - Posted by: Rinktum, 1/29/2013 8:49:36 AM     (No. 9145895)

Obama is always talking about the collective...well. It is time to put our collective foot down and say NO to this comprehensive legislation. We are not chumps and we understand exactly what this legislation means. It is amnesty. It is time to make our voices heard. Close the border FIRST and then we will have the conversation you so desperately want to have regarding the illegals that are presently residing here. Your motives are clearly self-serving and you do not have the best interests of this country in mind. You are pushing law abiding citizens to the breaking point with the talk of gun control and now amnesty. The American people by a large majority want the border secured first and not just a promise. The country will not collapse if we close the border first. This comprehensive crisis legislation must stop.

Do you really think it´s only 11 million? Probably at least double that number.

And, Obama has proven he will not follow the law regardless of what the law is - he will rule by fiat and we can all sit at our laptops and complain.

When Obama reveals his own plan today, it will completely undercut the "bipartisan" plan. Democrats don´t want legislation; they´d rather have the issue. Just like minimum wage, where an inflation kicker would eliminate the issue, democrats much prefer a gift that keeps on giving.

My family came to this country in 1719, we have been here a long time, yet I have more in common culturally, morally and my work ethic with the illegals crossing our southern border for work than I do with the urban populations on the East or West coasts or even Chicago. I have been a conservative, Republican most of the time, all my life (65 years) but on this issue I agree with what these Senators have proposed. BUT immigration reform must be tied to border security or it won´t work.

I have an idea on this....

Why don´t we just invite them ALL here.....? Let them come in freely and vote like they want. Keep the Democrats in power forever, and the free stuff flowing.

Eventually they´ll run out of money and maybe figure it out.

In the meantime, the rest of us can expatriate to Mexico and get that place straightened out. They´ll be begging to come back, but we can have a nice constitutional republic set up by then, with strict border enforcement.

Dibs on Baja.

First off, its not 11 million, more like 13 million and thats before friends and family. Grand total - maybe 30 million.
Second, what happens if we throw 8 million blue color workers willing to work for minimum wage in the labor force. Think your union will protect you - think again. The union shops will not be able to compete with non-union minimum wage shops. Think you are safe in government service, don´t bet on it. I am sure the new immigrants will be given EEO special status.

The Republican aide quoted says why the GOP tried to find a way to be able to vote for this bill when he said "our side wants Rubio to be successful". The Democrats have made this impossible and the Republicans recognize that fact.

Reply 21 - Posted by: antiquegolf, 1/29/2013 9:32:11 AM     (No. 9146042)

Re: reply 17.

Many of the illegals who cross the southern border settle in urban centers on the east and west coasts, plus Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Omaha, and so on. They may have come here for work but they also come to USA to connect to the social services lifeline. They also bring their 3rd world culture which for many of them includes resentment of this country. Here is my anecdotal experience: I work in a high school in metro Denver with 78 percent hispanic student body. I estimate 80 percent of them obtain at least one form of social services. We had a mock election. Romney received 8 percent. I doubt you share much in common with the latest waves of mexican "immigrants."

Reply 22 - Posted by: Starlady, 1/29/2013 9:43:13 AM     (No. 9146074)

John McCain´s statement stood out for me in this article. He said, "in 2007 the plan was to enforce the border first with that Immigration proposal as well, but the American people didn´t trust the government to follow through with that promise, no matter how many times he, John McCain, said the government would. The trust was just not there."(paraphrased)
Guess what Senator McCain, if the trust wasn´t there in 2007, it is even less there in 2013. I don´t think the trust level could get any lower than it is today.

Millions of patriotic Americans stopped the baloney in the summer of 2006 when McCain and W were pushing it. We melted switchboards and made the clowns back off. We have been beaten down for six plus years and no longer have the will to fight. The nation´s collapse is coming on ever faster and the GOP is complicit. Is Marco Rubio so stupid that he really thinks conspiring behind closed doors with the likes of McShame and Chuckie Schumer is in this country´s interest?

So the people that broke the law get to stay here legally, while the ones who have gotten on the legal citizenship path don´t get legalized? That makes no sense at all, and expect more illegals! Rewarding any behavior only encourages more of it, including illegal ones. We´ve learned and seen that already with Reagan´s amnesty. The borders aren´t any more secure than they were with Reagan and that´s why we´re in this situation. Lather, rinse, repeat. The politicians are selling the rest of the country out for their 30 pieces of silver. They don´t have to live with the consequences. Our family came from legal immigrants, through Ellis island, as most immigrant families of my generation did. There is a process, there are rules. Those who didn´t play by the rules shouldn´t be rewarded for their behavior. This conflation of the legal and illegal immigrant by the leftists proves the vapidity of their arguments. They have to obfuscate because their argument for legalizing the illegal immigrants can´t stand alone on merit. You wouldn´t reward the thief discovered in your house, inviting them to move in and live with you. Why do the same with those who have come here illegally? That´s nuts.

Lets not forget that there are lots of middle eastern men, posing as Mexicans, who are also flooding across that border. Al Quada, the Taliban, Hamas, Hezbollah - take your pick.

In November I drove from San Diego to the Grand Canyon and part of the trip took me right along the border. You can see the fences from the interstate. In Arizona, which is supposed to be tough on illegal immigrants, the US Border Control checkpoints along the highway were mostly sporting signs that said CLOSED. Secure the borders? Dream on.

"So people who came illegally yesterday, or next week, won´t qualify. They will have to leave the country."

...like the millions who already don´t qualify and who will never be found in order to be politely asked to leave the country?

How the heck does anyone think that illegals are going to voluntarily show themselves as illegals so they can "go to the back of the line" (right, like so many already did)? It´s already easy to get welfare for an illegal on day one he´s here, so what is the enforcement mechanism by which they will be found and shipped back to their country of origin?

Don´t try blowing that same old smoke up my keister, please.

Every illegal has a nation of origin.

For each illegal who gets a free pass for breaking our laws, their country of origin should see the quota we admit legally drop by one. No more adding legal immigrants on top of illegal ones.

Illegals seeking citizenship should not be given the luxury of dual citizenship, either. One or the other.

Reply 29 - Posted by: Philipsonh, 1/29/2013 10:32:52 AM     (No. 9146217)

Simple question. Why will it be easier and quicker for an ILLEGAL "immigrant" to attain U.S. citizenship than a LEGAL immigrant, who has been in line for years waiting for the opportunity. Simple answer, The Democratic party wants to have a larger base as quickly as possible. Who in their right mind thinks it is more humane to grant an individual who BROKE OUR LAWS U.S. citizenship than to an individual who OBEYED OUR LAWS and is now being discriminated against because of our Government. This is BLATANT Government bias.
Every single person on the current immigration list should be placed in line AHEAD of the people who snuck into this Country. We already have immigration laws, but they are NOT being followed.

The eleven million are just the ones bankrupting California. Anyone in congress who votes for this travesty needs to be recalled. If this passes the House, I will never vote GOP again and that includes everyone I know. John McCain is an idiot. What is the matter with you people in Arizona. He put on a Border Patrol jacket, looked at a fence and you fell for his BS one more time. You had a chance to dump him in the Primaries. The next thing you know he will pushing anti gun laws.

I still say that whoever is responsible for allowing 11 million (at least) illegals into this country should be tarred and feathered. Republican or Democrat. There should have been a temporary worker program. They sold out the country for their own selfish interests. Guess what? They´re still doing it.

Reply 32 - Posted by: bighambone, 1/29/2013 11:08:10 AM     (No. 9146298)

Do you really believe that Obama and the liberal Democrats would be pushing so hard for a streamlined process for 11 to 20 million illegal aliens to be given US citizenship and US voting rights as soon as possible, if they ever had reason to believe that more then a small percentage of the current illegal alien population they would legalize would ever have an epifinany and vote for conservative Republicans? Right now it appears that only some politicians of the Stupid Party would believe that Hispanics would flock to the Stupid Party after the illegal alien population is granted amnesty and that is not going to happen.

The vast majority of illegal aliens are poor people, who are generally uneducated, earn low wages, and have come here from socialist oriented countries. In order to survive here in high cost of living America, they are going to need access to all the social welfare benefits and programs, including Obama Care, that make up the US social safety network. Those people are going to vote for the liberal Democrats who want to expand those social programs and not the Republican (Stupid) Party that wants to contract those social programs.

Once the legalized alien population is granted US voting rights, the liberal Democrats will set up massive registration drives in immigrant communities to register as many of those people as possible as Democrat voters. With that many new voters, the Democrats will easily be able to flip States like Florida, Arizona and even Texas to where they resemble present day California politically. All that amounts to political suicide for the Stupid Party!

Broke immigration law? Broke customs law? Falsified official US documents? Broke labor laws ? Broke tax laws? Committed perjury? WELCOME TO AMERICA!! Nevermind that the GOP has never mustered more than about 30% of the Latino vote (even after the first amnesty) and never mind that 11 million is a lowball figure. Wonder why my Congresscritter has a jammed phone line today???

It´s a fact that the overwhelming majority of illegals in this country come from Mexico. I know, not all of them, just the majority. And ask yourself why do they come here? Well, Mexico is a country that has a totaly corrupt government, corrutp military, and corrupt police force. And it´s a pay to play system there. Bribery is rampant all up and down the line. So, there are a lot of Meicans that have heard about all the freebies available in the U.S. and how easy it is to sneak across the border, and ´volia´, here they come. And they bring their solicalist beliefs with them. And some of the even want California and Arizona to be returned to Mexico! Talk about stupid. So we, true Americans, are supposed to pay the tab for these people by pay ever and ever higher taxes. Yeah. That sounds about right./s

I think we should have a Constitutional Amendment that allows only native born Americans the right to vote.

The Republican party thinks this action will "save" the party and that the hispanic vote will turn conservative. Wrong! Most, if not all, Hispanics will still vote for whatever party gives them the most just like the blacks do now. We(conservatives) are done for in this country, especially with the population of white voters decreasing every year until they are the minorities. Time to sit back and watch your country crumble or move to where? I can´t name a country that´s any better.

Look, the Republicans under GW Bush had both houses of congress and the office of the President. yet, they failed miserably to do a single thing about immigration reform- not one that was effective and resolved the problem. They had a chance to strengthen the border and establish a green card system that would verify the person as a foreign entity not eligible to vote in our elections- they did nothing! Now we are faced with a terrible invasion that will get worse as the discussion of amnesty keeps getting tossed about. This is the result of a failed Republican party-

Think of this; if Mexicans were voting conservatively, the Dems would be throwing the U.S. Military at the border with orders to shoot to kill anyone attempting to cross over!

Immigration “reform” is predicated on the idea that there is something wrong with the laws we have. What is wrong is not the laws, it’s the complete lack of enforcement and a porous border. Pat Buchanan has said before that a nation that can’t control its borders is not a sovereign nation, and he’s right. We went to war over Kuwait’s sovereign borders, but won’t defend our own. Tell the gang of 8, fix the border now, then we’ll talk.

Rubio claims he can convince all of our illegals that they should vote for him, errr the GOP, because they will be opening businesses, etc, want lower taxes. what a hoot. Stupid Party. Rubio keeps touting his agreement with Schumer and Durbin. Claims 70% of Americans support his plan. Rush seems to be buying it. This is a disaster.

Obama is a lawless president so why pass any laws that depend on him? Obama prints money so why have any taxes. These amnesties for border security always give us the amnesty but never the border security. The border security promised several times before must be all achieved - not just promised - before anything else goes ahead. Undocumented immigrants have more privileges than documented citizens. Soon everyone will want to be undocumented! This playing field needs to be levelled as well.

Reply 41 - Posted by: johngalt1, 1/29/2013 1:29:46 PM     (No. 9146640)

Of course no one trusts Congress on this or any other issue, John. (““What I underestimated was the lack of trust and confidence in government," McCain said in November 2007.”)

If our borders were already secure, this debate wouldn’t sound like a broken record.

Find a single elected official willing stand up and commit political suicide by arguing that our borders shouldn’t be made secure. Border security should be the mother of all bipartisan issues. Instead, it’s being used as a bargaining chip by the same “progressives” who always promise budget cuts later if we raise taxes now, and then never, ever keep their word.

To paraphrase the Gipper, “Verify, then trust.”

They are on social services because they do not get a fair wage because they are illegal! Conservatives want to keep them illegal so they have low wages but then prevent them from accessing basic services. Liberals like them because they can buy their loyalty by providing the services and telling them how bad their employers are, but they must be kept dependent for both groups. Thus the border must stay open for both sides to get what they want, cheap labor and cheap votes. It´s always about the money and power, never really the ´cover´ issue.

This is just a proposal , it´s months
maybe even longer away from
resembling anything like a bill.
The legislative sausage making will take a long time.
Rubio has been very effective in explaining his principles on immigration reform
and they are solid and conservative.
Including border security , first.
When the final bill is crafted , if it´s amnesty , Rubio says he won´t support it.
Rubio says that 40 % of illegals are here on expired visas and have not come over the border.
And they are allowed to remain here on their expired visas because of lack of enforcement.
We already have de facto amnesty now.
At least this tries to control the border and the population.
"Individuals with probationary legal status
will be required to go to the back of the line of prospective immigrants,
pass an additional background check,
pay taxes,
learn English and civics,
demonstrate a history of work in the United States,
and current employment,
among other requirements, in order to earn the opportunity to apply for lawful permanent residency,"
If the those applying for probationary status do not meet all the requirements ,
will they then be deported ?

Racism, racism, discrimination! Why shouldn´t the illegals be health screened? All the white people from Northern Europe and Eastern Europe in the 1920s had to have the health tests that they had available in those days. And the sick ones were sent back. Two voyages for thousands.
Standards. Health screenings. But not for the brown people of the southern hemisphere.
If thewe people are going to jam Obama care we better have a bead on their health. Many could carry parasites from which as ahost they could have only a mild flu-like symptom.

Data presented at the National Review Conference in DC this past weekend was that 50% of Hispanic mothers are unwed, with conclusion that most are on the dole, and 70%+ of black womena re unwed mothers and most are on the dole.

The solution to our country´s financial problems is to stop paying/rewarding these unwed mothers to breed indiscriminately at taxpayer expense -- that is called "INVOLUNTARY SERVITUDE", or slavery, which was outlawed some time ago.

It´s the free stuff, Stupid. Read the Manhattan Institute fellow Heather MacDonald´s essay on why the Hispanic vote goes to the Dims. Free Stuff. What´s surprising is the number of Hispanic votes the GOP does get. Take out the Cuban-American voters and the number is probably pretty close to the 90-odd percent that the Black voters give the Dims.

Before anyone legalized:

1) Make illegal immigration a felony with 1-10 years in prison.
2) Amend the constitution so babies born to illegals are not citizens.

I´m open to this, once the border has been secured. That was the "deal" with Simpson-Mazzoli, upon which the Dems reneged. Fool us once ..

Well, if the the little thing standing in the way is securing the borders first, how is this going to work? They haven´t been able to do it so far.

Get ready for the last straw. First, though, I´d like to suggest that anyone reading this column in a local newspaper or news site pat the editor on the back for publishing what in our neo-medieval world of fear amounts to a forbidden column. Yup, I am about to say something about the Great Barack Obama Identity/Eligibility Scandal again. I know that this is one rich and urgent topic that doesn´t see the light of day in certain so-called news outlets -- and I say that from the experience of watching my own syndicated columns

You could hear the deep breath, the pause before a conversational plunge. On the phone were Monica Gabrielle and Kristen Breitweiser. Their husbands died at the World Trade Center in the Sept. 11 attack. This week, a new effort to find remains from the site uncovered 39 pieces of what appeared to be human bones. That was the yield from the first three days of work in a process that is expected to go on for at least two months.

Obama Budget to Include Cuts

WASHINGTON — President Obama next week will take the political risk of formally proposing cuts to Social Security and Medicare in his annual budget in an effort to demonstrate his willingness to compromise with Republicans and revive prospects for a long-term deficit-reduction deal, administration officials say. In a significant shift in fiscal strategy, Mr. Obama on Wednesday will send a budget plan to Capitol Hill that departs from the usual presidential wish list that Republicans typically declare dead on arrival.

Washington is edging closer to a budget deal, thanks to a gutsy change in strategy at the White House. Next week, President Obama will propose specific cuts to Social Security and Medicare in his annual budget, according to senior White House officials. That will put the onus on House Speaker John Boehner to show some leadership, too. He needs to push Republicans toward accepting tax increases beyond the $600 billion approved in December. It can be done. As I reported last month, Washington’s biggest myth is that a budget deal is out of reach

Do North Korea’s threats mask
power struggle behind the scenes?

WASHINGTON — The North Korean army warned the United States on Wednesday it has been cleared to wage nuclear war using “smaller, lighter and diversified weapons.” In a speech earlier in the day, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel noted that North Korea has both the nuclear weapons and the delivery system “now.” It’s the latest round in an escalation of rhetoric and actions that began with a North Korean nuclear test in February. Still, military officials and experts don’t expect North Korea to launch an attack on the United States.

Two breaking news alerts came through the wire this afternoon: First, the AP sent word that Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has called North Korea´s latest rhetoric a real, clear danger and threat to the U.S. and its allies. Within minutes, CNBC announced that the Pentagon has sent a new missile defense to Guam. The reports that followed those alerts added some meat to the storty -- "Hagel´s comments come as tensions continue to rise between North and South Korea," etc. -- but they are notably lacking in context. How serious is the threat, really? Are the North and South on the verge of war, or is this yet another bluff?

In a bizarre new twist to the saga of Sen. Bob Menendez and his donor-friend Salomon Melgen, members of Melgen’s circle are now hurling accusations at FBI agents investigating the pair’s relationship. During an appearance on the weekly Dominican TV show La Respuesta last week, Melgen’s uncle Vincho Castillo accused the FBI of threatening and kidnapping two of Melgen’s maids. In addition to being the Dominican Republic’s top drug cop and founder of a far right-wing political party, Vincho Castillo is also the father of Vinicito Castillo, a lawyer who allegedly participated in sex parties organized by Melgen.

My nephew’s high school government class is studying propaganda, a word most students associated with Hitler, Goebbels, and the like. “I deal with propagandists every day,” I told the class in the Detroit area last week. “They work in the White House and in Congress--Republicans and Democrats alike.” The kids were a bit surprised. “Are you calling them Nazis?” one asked. Of course not, I replied, but politicians today are using new communications tools to spread their version of the truth, much of it misleading. A smart piece by Nancy Benac of the Associated Press describes how the Obama White House “image machine” works--“serving up a stream of words, images, and videos that invariably cast the president as commanding, compassionate, and on the ball.

Will Obama’s Majority Survive?

Since November, the prospective death of the Republican coalition has hovered over American politics, and the autopsy has gained renewed attention in light of the debates over gay marriage and immigration, both of which split the GOP from rising chunks of the electorate. I’m an advocate of the theory, first put forward a decade ago by Ruy Teixeira and John Judis, that the electorate is forming a natural Democratic majority. The Republican Party appears to be caught in a double bind, in which the electorate is growingly progressively less white, and even younger white voters hold less conservative views than older ones. What’s more, evidence suggests that voters maintain the partisan allegiances they form at a young age. The picture looks grim for the GOP.

The sequester doesn’t appear to have hit the West Wing of the White House particularly hard. Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters — after more than a month of dodging questions on White House effects — that 480 employees of the White House Office of Management and Budget have received furlough notices. Even that tidbit is weeks old. After Congress let the March 1 deadline pass without replacing automatic across-the-board spending cuts, executive branch agencies have been scrambling to cut their budgets and furlough employees.

At some point, I feel that everything will be good.”That point has not arrived. The third baseman acknowledged meeting with the league about their investigation into Biogenesis, the anti-aging clinic whose records contained Rodriguez’s name. Former CIA director Mike Hayden credits “an incredible band of sisters” for the success of the operation that found and brought down Osama bin Laden. Now one of those sisters has been appointed acting chief of the CIA’s National Clandestine service. It is a major milestone for women at the CIA, the first time in the agency’s history that a female officer has headed the clandestine service. But The Post reports that CIA Director John Brennan is “hesitating” at giving her the position on a permanent basis, because of her past association with the CIA’s rendition, detention and interrogation (RDI) program. This is an outrage. According to several former senior CIA officials I spoke with, the officer is highly respected and unquestionably qualified for this post.

Michelle Obama has admitted that she is already tired of the bangs she first sported in January. The First Lady said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: ´Bangs are a day-by-day proposition. They´re starting to grow out, get a little irritating.´ Still, she hasn´t let her hairdo woes get her down. ´It´s okay,´ she said after her initial complaint. ´We´ll be good.´ The first indication that her hairstyle was becoming a burden came about last weekend, when Malia, 14, was spotted adjusting her mother´s hair during the White House Easter Egg Roll.

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

No one is more preoccupied these days with Hillary Clinton´s 2016 plans than the Beltway political class—not even the former presidential candidate herself. To hear some tell it, her decision will be dispositive for all other Democrats thinking of entering the race. And pundits and reporters aren´t the only ones positing the "The Hillary Factor": No less than the House Democratic whip, Steny Hoyer, told BuzzFeed, “I don´t know that anybody would run against Hillary…. If she runs, she clears the field.” It´s an understandable conclusion, given Clinton´s stature in the Democratic Party and her 70 percent

In the chilling interview, a distraught Ms. Smith, in tears, pleaded for answers and spoke of the efforts to silence her. Ms. Smith first relayed how her son, prior to the attack, requested additional security in advance and warned the State Department: He did tell them, ahead of time, he typed it into his little typewriter over there,

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Her betrayal consists of being gauche enough to acknowledge publicly a truth that everyone who’s come up through Ivy League culture knows intuitively —

"The budget would limit an individual’s total balance across tax-preferred accounts to an amount sufficient to finance an annuity of not more than $205,000 per
