| Hundreds of thousands of property owners in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties are getting something they probably don´t want in the new year - higher real estate taxes. Countywide increases, approved in December, affect the owners of all 382,304 real estate parcels in Chester and Delaware Counties. Some people are taking a double hit, as at least 27 towns in those counties also have increased taxes.(Snip) "Upper Darby is off the charts," said Ed Silbertstein, who owns a home there that the county estimates is worth $285,000. His annual tax bill is now $11,542,

Our tax system is one huge Ponzi scheme. I´m not talking about Social Security and Medicare, I´m talking about our entire tax system. And it all comes to a rapid boil with real estate taxes. When the tsunami of taxpayer revolt begins it will be there.
Every citizen pays some form of taxes to the State or Fed govt. Many pay only sales and gas taxes but they still pay. All of this money funnels upward, either to the state or the feds who then put it all into a pile and divvy up the spoils right back to the states and towns it originally came from. And we all expect to get more back than we put in.
So far the Feds have appeased us.
But as money for all the grand schemes starts to dry up the Federal Largess to cities and towns school budgets still need to be funded, the trash still needs to be picked up and the snow needs to be plowed. So where does that money come from?
Property Taxes. and where does that money go? 2 miles away to town hall, just a short little walk with your pitchfork and a bucket of tar.
The average suburban homeowner now pays more in Real Estate taxes than he does for State Income taxes. Many pay more to the local School District than they oay to the Fed. That is especially true for Seniors on a fixed income who played by the rules their entire lives and paid off their homes before they retired.

Most real estate taxes go for .... drum roll ... ´education´!
And what is that? It is whatever the centralized elected school board says it is. So a bunch of people who supposedly benefit from the ´education´ (because they get better job applicants???) dictate what parents will get "for free".
Hmmmm I have a problem with that - none of their business, not a proper function of government. Most parents in my view are using it as babysitting, with sports being the primary benefit they sight.
Bah humbug. I don´t need anyone to pay for my kid´s ´education´, thank you. And I don´t think we ought to be paying for most people´s - think means testing there.
I favor separation of school and state. Google it. Imagine the effect of eliminating most property taxes on a given county? I smell an economic boom. Perhaps a lesson or two for a few parents as well.

Being a numbers person, I couldn´t resist.
$285,000 at 20% down, means a mortgage of $228,000. At 5% over 30 years, this comes to $13,062 annually to service the debt.
Taxes: $11,542
Mortgage payments: $13,062
Taxes almost as high as the mortgage payments!

Wow, my house is more expensive and is taxed about 1/3 of that house in PA. Oh and we have nice services here too- good libraries open many hours, parks, decent schools, as schools go which I don´t use since home schooling is better, but probably all the things PA offers and at less than 1/3 of the cost.

The worst thing about Phila Real Estate taxes ............... is that the money goes to Phila´s Public Schools ............ and the tax is MOST unfair.
Most home owners in Phila. who pay the Real Estate taxes DO NOT have children in Public School ................ and ........... MOST Public School attending children in Phila. have families that are NOT home owners and thus DO NOT pay Real Estate taxes.
Again the tax is MOST unfair ............ and I´m not even addressing the GROSS misuse of the Phila. Department of Education funds, and city contracts.
