A Security Council team pledged support for Yemen´s political transition in a rare visit to Sanaa Sunday that drew thousands to the streets to demand the scrapping of immunity for ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh under a UN-backed deal. (Snip) "The people want to put the killer on trial," chanted the demonstrators, referring to Saleh who was eased out of office in February 2012 after three decades of rule following the UN-backed and Gulf-brokered deal. Demonstrators also called for a "return of funds stolen by the former president and his family." The Youth of the Revolution, a group that was the main

As the UN attempts to broker a deal to remove ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh, some of the wiser people are not having it. They want to put him, and probably some of his relatives on trial for murder as well as they want the money that Saleh has probably stolen from Yemen´s treasury. This is what Arafat did. Meanwhile many are killed today in Egypt causing Morsi to declare a state of emergency in three major cities.

Authorities today announced the biggest gun bust in city history — an NYPD operation that took down two smuggling rings funneling illegal guns from the South for cheap resale on New York’s streets. Nineteen thugs were arrested and 254 firearms recovered. Those busted included two gun runners who oversaw the pair of loosely organized rings and sold their illicit goods through the same city dealer, officials said. One of the men, Walter Walker, used a rap studio at 1991 Atlantic Ave. in the Ocean Hill section of Brooklyn as his home base in the city. The undercover police operation had

No aspect of the bitter and enduring debate about Lyme disease—which I addressed in the magazine a few weeks ago—has been more contentious than the dispute over how many people actually become infected each year. Last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that thirty thousand Americans were diagnosed with Lyme disease, the most commonly reported tick-borne illness in the United States. Today, it bumped the number a bit—to “around” three hundred thousand. The shocking difference is not as bizarre as it might seem. (Snip) If caught early, Lyme is easily treated

Britain was facing intense pressure on Monday to give a detailed explanation of the decision to detain the partner of the Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald after the White House confirmed that it was given a "heads-up" before David Miranda was taken into custody for nine hours at Heathrow. As the UK´s anti-terror legislation watchdog called for a radical overhaul of the laws that allowed police to confiscate Miranda´s electronic equipment, the US distanced itself from the action by saying that British authorities took the decision to detain him. Budget cuts mandated by sequestration have eliminated Head Start services for more than 57,000 children nationwide, according to new data released by the federal government. The automatic, across-the-board budget cuts have also resulted in pay cuts or layoffs for at least 18,000 employees of Head Start, which provides education, nutrition, and health services for children aged 5 and under. Overall, Head Start will provide 1.3 million fewer days of service nationwide because of the cuts, according to the Department of Health and Human Services, which operates the program.

Trenton — In case anyone had any doubts on where Gov. Chris Christie stands on climate change, he made his position crystal clear this afternoon: It´s real and it´s a problem. It’s hard to fathom how or why our administration ever thought the Muslim Brotherhood saw democracy as other than a means to an end — and a particularly repellent one at that — in the first place. My son is a good kid." Earlier today, former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer has urged Australian tourists to boycott the US in the wake of the shooting murder of the Melbourne baseball star.

"So, how many black friends do you have now?" It´s a question I get asked a lot, ever since I set out five years ago to find out why I, your typical middle-class white person, had no black friends at all. I do have black friends now, actually. Several. But I rarely offer that information when asked, because to ask white people how many black friends they have is to pose the wrong question. The 16-year-old girl’s once-beautiful face was grotesque. She had been disfigured beyond all recognition in the 18 months she had been held captive by the Comanche Indians. Now, she was being offered back to the Texan authorities by Indian chiefs as part of a peace negotiation. To gasps of horror from the watching crowds, the Indians presented her at the Council House in the ranching town of San Antonio in 1840, the year Queen Victoria married Prince Albert. ‘Her head, arms and face were full of bruises and sores,’ wrote one witness, Mary Maverick. ‘And her nose was actually burnt off to the bone.

The military judge presiding over the case of the Fort Hood shooter has blocked several key pieces of evidence that prosecutors said would explain the mindset of the soldier accused in the 2009 rampage. On Monday it was revealed that the judge has banned prosecutors from giving any speculation into Major Nidal Hasan’s motive in the shooting that left 13 dead and 30 others wounded, including the belief that he felt he had a ‘jihad duty’ to carry out the attack. Prosecutors had asked the judge to approve several witnesses and various evidence to support what they allege motivated Hasan
