| Eight years after Congressional opponents pronounced President George W. Bush’s immigration reform plan dead on arrival, there appears to be a real opportunity that a far-reaching proposal on the subject will pass the Senate. As the Washington Post reports, a working group of senators, including heavy hitters from both sides of the aisle, are close to an agreement on the principles for changing the country’s immigration laws. According to the Post, the proposal, which could be announced as early as a week from today will include the following:

OP, I expect more insight from you. I would have closed the borders and deported the lot of them but that´s not possible now. Rubio should be supported in his enterprise. He´s an up and coming guy and we need to face facts and fall behind him as he tries to bring some order to this mess. We are going to need him in the future. It will be interesting to see whether the Democrats complain that he is not natural born. I´m sure they plan to destroy hin before we ever get to that point.

I cringe when I hear the phrase ´ balanced approach´ just as I do with most words that come out of his teleprompter. This is the current replacement for the worn out ´ smarter approach´ that was used by these Marxists in the recent past. Constantly updating these catchphrases is yet another rule from Alinsky - not too difficult when you control the media. Rush points this out many times , e.g., ´gravitas´.

Barry no longer needs the votes so his incentive to fix immigration is now gone. It´s the same with his "affordable" health care, social security, green energy and gay whatever. Now he can start working on the real impediments to his lifelong dictatorship, like gun confiscation and the theft of wealth and property.

Whenever I hear the words ´immigration reform´ from those idiots in Washington, all I think is: More illegals, zero enforcement.
I think most people might actually support a legal path for those who actually want to become citizens if it didn´t reward lawbreaking and included actual enforcement of the law.

He will only enforce the laws he likes anyway.

The "increased visas for engineers" is a disaster, an increased way to lay off Americans from engineering jobs. The hubbub for this by credulous and bought-off politicians is disgusting.
I guess I hope Obama does sabotage it.
Rubio is a fine speaker, but I´m not really sure he knows what he´s doing.

Obama wants all illegal aliens to be granted amnesty and be put on "a path to citizenship" so that in a few years all could vote knowing that 80% or more would become liberal Democrat voters. With all those new Democrat foreign born voters, it would be long-term politician suicide for the Republicans who would never again be able to win national elections.
As Rubio has said, illegal aliens should only be legalized through a conditional immigration status that allows them to stay in the USA indefinitely, to work, and to travel to and from the USA for as long as they comply with the immigration laws. Most illegal aliens would be satisfied with such a conditional legal status.
Then any legalized aliens who wish to become a permanent residents, the permanent immigrant status that leads to US citizenship, must be required to meet the same requirements for permanent residence that all prospective legal immigrants must meet now. They must individually qualify for an immigrant visa under the current immigration laws, and only then be allowed to apply for permanent residence. For any who wish to go on and apply for naturalized US citizenship they must meet the same naturalization requirements as all other permanent residents must do now.
That is where the political rub will come in, as Obama and the liberal Democrats will not go along with Rubio´s line of thinking here, as they want those many millions of legalized aliens to become Democrat voters ASAP, knowing that would change the political balance of the USA and destroy the Republicans ability to compete in future elections.

George Bush was only emboldened to push for his amnesty plan after the House had gone Dem in 2006. Thus the Senate became the battle ground where the House was just assumed willing to approve any Immigration bill coming out of the Senate
This time it is different. What comes out of the Senate - if leaning too much towards permanent residency for illegals (and the accompanied massive hikes in the taxpayers´ SS and Medicare liabilities for those illegals), will fail in the House. Congressmen are far less insulated from grassroots opposition to amnesty than are Senators - who often can rely on a huge artificial urban voting block to remain in office.

Rubio is a disaster. His plan may help him get elected in 2016, but that´s a long shot. What is far more certain is that the plan will cost the GOP severely in several Western swing states. This is why the stupid party is the stupid party. Amnesty is not only immorally rewarding people who´ve broken immigration law, customs law, labor laws, tax laws, and offen falsified documents and committed perjury, but it is also political suicide, long term, for Teh Stupid Party. Rubio is a disgrace.

Eliana Johnson reports that four Republican members of the Senate Judiciary — Jeff Sessions, Chuck Grassley, Mike Lee, and Ted Cruz — are calling for transparency from their GOP colleagues in the “Gang of Eight” that is drafting immigration reform legislation. In a letter to John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Marco Rubio, and Jeff Flake, the four Judiciary Committee members express concern that an immigration reform bill will be rushed through Congress without proper oversight in the form of hearings and robust debate. They note that the Gang has “secretly met for months” without consulting

The Supreme Court could soon end one of the federal government´s most archaic practices. Since the 1930s, the Agriculture Department has turned California raisin growers into pawns of its Raisin Administrative Committee, which can commandeer up to half of the farmer´s crop and then pay them little or nothing for the product. Marvin Horne, a 67-year-old raisin farmer in Fresno, Calif., was fined almost $700,000 for refusing to surrender control of much of his harvest to the government committee in 2002. Horne, who has been growing raisins for more than 40 years,

There are many who scoff at Andrew Cuomo’s chances in a presidential primary campaign, but I am not among them. His name is an iconic Democratic brand, he’s forceful on the stump and a prodigious fund-raiser. Besides, somebody has to win the nomination. Of course, there are hurdles. Saint Hillary is gearing up to run, and there will be a scrum among contenders, probably including Vice President Joe Biden, competing just to be Clinton’s top rival. The scenario, then, is daunting but doable — or at least it was,

A great superpower, weakened by economic calamity at home and staggering under the debt from years of war in the Middle East, finally collapses. A new political best-seller, or an apocalyptic Hollywood blockbuster? Neither — it´s the story told by a 1622 shipwreck whose treasures were desperately needed to shore up the finances of the struggling Spanish Empire. The galleon Buen Jesus y Nuestra Senora del Rosario was one of 28 ships in the Tierra Firme fleet; all were sailing from the New World back to Spain, laden with colonial treasures,

Historian James Thomas Flexner referred to George Washington as "the indispensable man." Americans all know he was a general, but have you ever wondered what grade of general? How many stars did Gen. Washington have? In today´s Army, a one-star general is a brigadier; two stars is a major general; three stars is a lieutenant general; four stars is just plain general. During World War II, Congress created the five-star general, the modern rank of general of the Army. There had been an earlier grade that was called general of the Army,

On March 30, three days after North Korea severed a military hotline with the South and announced that South Korean President Park Geun-hye “will meet a miserable ruin,” the country declared a state of war. “The time has come to stage a do-or-die final battle,” an official statement said. A 25-year-old pop star named Seo In-guk had appeared on a popular reality TV show the night before and, in a misstep that quickly dominated online conversations, had washed his strawberries incorrectly. If you had an extortion investigation in your "what twists the Rutgers basketball scandal will take next" pool, well, collect your winnings. Also, buy a lottery ticket because you may be telepathic. Because the F.B.I. is investigating Eric Murdock, the whistleblowing former assistant coach, for extortion. University officials let it slip to The New York Times´ Steve Eder that Federal Bureau of Investigation officers recently visited the campus and met with athletic director Tim Pernetti sometime before Pernetti was fired on Friday. They´re trying to determine whether or not Murdock, the former director of player development,

Imagine the pitch to a History Channel executive for the smash hit The Bible. Here’s one scenario: Producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett: “Hi, we want to produce a story that appeals to all age groups. It’s has everything: love, lust, greed, war, self-sacrifice and redemption. It’s called ‘The Bible.’” Executive: “Could you repeat that? You said ‘The Bible’?” RD and MB: “Yes – we want to retell the Bible for this generation. And we think we can make money doing it. We’ve done a lot of market research —there is no competition out there.”

Since the Shermans of General Patton´s Third Army crossed the Rhine on March 22, 1945, there have been American tanks in Germany. No more, as John Vandiver of Stars and Stripes reports. The U.S. Army’s 69-year history of basing main battle tanks on German soil quietly ended last month when 22 Abrams tanks, a main feature of armored combat units throughout the Cold War, embarked for the U.S. The departure of the last M-1 Abrams tanks coincides with the inactivation of two of the Army’s Germany-based heavy brigades.

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

No one is more preoccupied these days with Hillary Clinton´s 2016 plans than the Beltway political class—not even the former presidential candidate herself. To hear some tell it, her decision will be dispositive for all other Democrats thinking of entering the race. And pundits and reporters aren´t the only ones positing the "The Hillary Factor": No less than the House Democratic whip, Steny Hoyer, told BuzzFeed, “I don´t know that anybody would run against Hillary…. If she runs, she clears the field.” It´s an understandable conclusion, given Clinton´s stature in the Democratic Party and her 70 percent
