| A Las Vegas woman is suing Match.com for $10 million, after the online dating service allegedly paired her with a man who stabbed her 10 times in the face and chest in an attempt to kill her. Mary Kay Beckman, 50, claims in a lawsuit filed earlier this month that she joined the website looking for a "healthy loving relationship," but instead was nearly killed. Beckman says she went on a few dates in October 2011 with Wade Ridley, but after ending the relationship came home one day to find him in her garage with a knife.

A sad and scary situation. But how does a "warning" protect anyone? "Beware! Someone you meet on Match may want to kill you"? Shouldn´t any woman be cautious when meeting a stranger? Couldn´t this guy have attacked a woman he met at a grocery store? Do they need warning labels, too?

I read the article on a link from another site and she had ended the relationship folks. She figured out he was bad news. His ego could not handle rejection.
For those who think online dating services are bad news, think about how many stories you have read about women who have been brutalized in exactly the same situation as this by somebody they met in school, at a game, in a store, in a bar, in a park, etc. Yes, online dating services need to research who they offer a little better, but they aren´t the whole problem here. Thankfully this woman survived.

There are no guarantees that any relationship, whether the introduction is at church, in a bar or online, is immune to this happening. Some common sense has to be exercised regardless. There are usually signs a person is unstable, if you can get beyond the superficial attraction.

Let’s then postulate that a majority agrees with the president that expanding background checks is a “reasonable” thing to do — redolent of “a commonsense approach” — and that those of us with the temerity to oppose it will be widely painted as “extremists.”

David Corn, the Mother Jones writer who released the "secret tape" of a Mitch McConnell campaign meeting, might have broken the law by publishing information that appears to have been obtained illegally, according to sources. Asked about how the tape was obtained yesterday on TV, Corn said, "We did not make the tape. We were provided the tape. And that it is our understanding that the tape was not part of any Watergate style bugging operation, as Mitch McConnell has claimed it to be." But as details trickle out, it seems Corn might not have been particularly forthright about the tactics used.

“Courts Without Judges” reads the headline of an attack on Senate Republicans by the New York Times editorial board. Bemoaning the fact that there 85 vacancies in the federal judiciary, the Times asserts that “by far the most important cause of this unfortunate state of affairs is the determination of Senate Republicans, for reasons of politics, ideology and spite, to confirm as few of President Obama’s judicial choices as possible.” However, as Ed Whelan points out, in the second-to-last paragraph of the editorial we learn that “62 district and circuit court vacancies have no nominees.”
