Obama Off To A Slow Start In
Capitol Hill Gun Campaign

Buzzfeed, by John Stanton

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama´s campaign operation appeared to be getting off to a shakey start Friday, sending out an ill-timed email calling on millions of supporters to flood the Capitol Hill switchboard with calls supporting gun control. Call in campaigns can be a powerful tool in lobbying Congress: when done right, lawmakers´ offices are inundated with thousands of constituents demanding to speak with the senator or congresswoman about a particular issue. Well-orchestrated campaigns can even result in the congressional switchboard going down for hours at a time, disrupting everyday life in the Capitol

I said last week, this was a set up in the senate to get the purple state dems off the hook on guns for re-election and to eventually for Obama to say he couldn´t get congress to pass laws so hell do it himself.

Anything Obama does that infringes, will go straight to court.he´d be better off settling for something watered down so he can say he did something.

Maybe they´ll start telling doctors they have to ask female patients if they ever had an abortion. seriously, can anybody imagine the reaction to this but no problems on guns.

There is some evidence that abortion leads to breast cancer so this is actually more legitimate than the gun question. Abortions also affect the mental health of some women.

search tests limits of satellites

The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has exposed the technological limits of satellites, which can see a license plate from space — if not necessarily read it — but struggle to find a missing jetliner. These limits are shaped by physics, money and practicality. Military and commercial satellites are not closely observing and amassing data about the blank places on the map in lightly traveled seas — such as remote areas of the Indian Ocean thousands of miles from where Flight MH370 vanished from radar. There’s also a trade-off when scrutinizing the surface from space: You can go wide

When the National Zoo’s female sloth bear, Khali, delivered three cubs last December, she consumed one of them right after it was born. Carnivores do this in the wild when there is a sick offspring. A deceased cub in the den can draw predators, the zoo said. But a week later, when Khali consumed a second cub, keepers feared for the third. So for the first time in the zoo’s history, keepers took a sloth bear cub from its mother to raise by hand. Three months later, after weeks of incubators, midnight feedings and quiet sessions in a rocking chair,

Early in the Ukraine crisis, when the Europeans were working on bringing Ukraine into the EU system and Vladimir Putin was countering with threats and bribes, one British analyst lamented that “we went to a knife fight with a baguette.” That was three months ago. Life overtakes parody. During the Ukrainian prime minister’s visit to Washington last week, his government urgently requested military assistance. The Pentagon refused. It offered instead military ration kits. Putin mobilizes thousands of troops, artillery and attack helicopters on Ukraine’s borders and Washington counters with baguettes, American-style. One thing we can say for sure in these

Russian mockery of President Obama has taken a bizarre turn. The newly elected Prime Minister of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, has tweeted (in Russian) a photoshopped image of Barack Obama in a Russian military uniform, implying that our president’s behavior can be explained by his purported status as a deep cover Russian agent. Oleg Atbashian of The People’s Cube, a former Soviet propagandist who fled to the West, has a fascinating post explaining what is going on here. Such a jab could have easily come from conservative jokesters in the U.S., as a way to vent their bitterness over Obama´s inept

President Obama declared today that the U.S. will not take military action in Ukraine. I think most of us had worked that out. “What we are going to do,” Obama declared “is mobilize all of our diplomatic resources to make sure that we’ve got a strong international coalition that sends a clear message.” The clear message will be this — please, please don’t invade more territory. In ruling out military action, Obama explained that “the Ukrainians don’t want [an actual war with Russia], nobody would want that.” But if Russia continues to devour their country, the Ukrainians are no less

A former high-ranking EPA staffer convicted of stealing nearly $900,000 by pretending to be a CIA spy had virtually no experience, got his job with help from a college buddy, and went on to play a key role in sweeping environmental regulations, according to a report Senate Republicans released Wednesday. Those regulations remain in place despite John C. Beale’s lack of environmental expertise, Republican investigators said, adding that they want the Environmental Protection Agency to review the work in which Beale was involved during his 24-year tenure. The report said Beale led an “itinerant life” as a police officer and

Federal officials have no qualms flying the friendly skies in style, regularly using executive jets and other planes in the government’s fleet of 1,700 aircraft for everyday travel. But they often don’t track how much such trips cost or the reasons why they skipped cheaper commercial flights in favor of firing up one of Uncle Sam’s aircraft. And lawmakers in Congress — usually charged with overseeing or reining in such expenditures — have their own addiction to luxury travel with a growing tendency to fly first class. Those findings by two separate watchdogs in Congress are the latest examples of a

IT’S EASY to conclude that Vladimir Putin’s passionate defense of Russia’s takeover of Crimea “just didn’t jibe with reality,” as Secretary of State John F. Kerry put it. In a speech on Tuesday, the Russian ruler repeated mendacious charges that the Ukrainian government had been hijacked by “nationalists, neo-Nazis, Russophobes and anti-Semites”; voiced his paranoid conspiracy theory about supposed Western sponsorship of popular revolutions, including the Arab Spring; and brazenly compared Russia’s abrupt annexation of Ukraine with the reunification of Germany. It’s necessary, however, to take some of what Mr.?Putin said seriously, because of the implicit threat it poses to

If President Obama’s 2012 campaign was known for anything, it was its voter mobilization operation, said to be the most sophisticated ever assembled in a presidential campaign. Which makes David Plouffe’s comments over the weekend all the more telling for Democrats as they look nervously toward the November midterm elections. When Republican David Jolly defeated Democrat Alex Sink in Florida’s 13th Congressional District a week ago, Democratic leaders explained away the outcome by arguing that the district tilted heavily in favor of the GOP in midterm and especially special elections. President Obama on Monday slapped Russia with the kinds of economic sanctions not seen since the Cold War, but the administration’s supposed hard line was met with mockery and a “collective shrug” in Moscow, Kiev and Washington. One day after Crimeans voted overwhelmingly to secede from Ukraine and join Russia, the White House and its partners in the European Union responded by targeting high-ranking officials in Moscow along with pro-Russian figures responsible for the unrest in Ukraine. The move adds even more tension to a dramatic standoff between Russia and the West, but early signs suggest the latest round of

First lady Michelle Obama, her two daughters, Malia and Sasha, and her mother touched down Thursday in China for what’s being touted as a weeklong feel-good tourist event, amid increasing murmurs back home about U.S. taxpayers having to foot the bill. Mrs. Obama is supposed to use her visit for soft diplomacy only, and shy from the more controversial topics that plague U.S.-China relations, namely human rights and economics. No reporters accompanied the family on the trip. “The nature of her visit is really quite

Is Barack Obama simply too busy to be Chief Executive of the United States? Apparently. One of the primary functions of the president is to keep the nation safe, to preserve it from its enemies. To do that effectively, one would actually have to maintain something of a consistent level of attention to the moving pieces that directly influence how future events will unfold. None other than the truly sycophantic thinks for a second that President Obama cares a whit for anything that does not involve fundamentally altering the social composition of this country. Or golf. President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he thinks Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick “would make a great president or vice president.” Obama and Patrick, both Democrats, are friends and close political allies. The two men have campaigned for each other, with Patrick acting as a surrogate for Obama nationally during the 2012 presidential race. Patrick has said clearly that he intends to return to the private sector when his second term as governor is up at the end of the year and will not run for president in 2016. Black students are more likely to be suspended from U.S. public schools — even as tiny preschoolers. The racial disparities in American education, from access to high-level classes and experienced teachers to discipline, were highlighted in a report released Friday by the Education Department´s civil rights arm. The suspensions — and disparities — begin at the earliest grades. Black children represent about 18 percent of children in preschool programs in schools, but they make up almost half of the preschoolers who are suspended more than once, the report said. Six percent of the nation´s districts with preschools reported suspending at
