Meet the 23-year-old squatter who

Andre Barbosa can safely say that he has one of the nicest homes on the block in Boca Raton, Florida. But the 23-year-old Brazilian national does not own or even rent the palatial $2.5million estate legally - he is a squatter. Barbosa, originally from the neighboring Pompano Beach, moved into 580 Golden Harbour Drive in July Now he is threatening to use an obscure real estate law that allows people to claim a property as their own if they stay there for seven years. No one witnessed Barbosa breaking into the 7,522-squae foot, five-bedroom, six-bathroom waterfront home,

No one witnessed Barbosa breaking into the house so he cannot be arrested?? So if no one saw someone breaking into your house even though they are not supposed to be there they can´t be arrested?? This is pure insanity. How do these criminals know how to do this?

Well this is encouraging ... encouraging more of the same, and at the bottom of the page they have a ´how t´ article. Sounds like the bank has too much foreclosure inventory and not managing what it has. Banks need to start employing house sitters with a contract to get out when they are told.

Leave it to the geniuses running Bank of Amigo to figure out how to lose $2.48 million on a highly desirable house, and bequeath it to a loser like Barbosa.

Spreading the wealth the B of A way. No wonder they need bailouts every few years.

If he´s 23 now, 7 years ago he was 16 and a minor not eligible to own property. Don´t know what age defines an adult in FL, but if it is 18, he has only occupied the house for 5 years. Maybe the city can take the house for non-payment of taxes, pay the squatter what he paid (nothing) then auction the house to pay taxes. I´ll take a cut from whichever entity moves fastest.

Remember the woman that had her home remodeled only to return to find that other woman living in her home ? Keep printing these stories and see how many copycats you get.

Deport the smart aleck. How is it that foreigners come here and know the laws better than citizens and use them against US ?

Technically, the house is not abandoned. The bank owns it. What are they going to do in Boca with that much money against them ?

The fact that this uninvited intruder is in the house is prood positive & evidence enough that he sneaked in ILLEGALLY and should be removed and prosecuted. And has his immigration status been examined? He could even be in the country ILLEGALLY, as apparently he has no scruples about entering other people´s property ILLEGALLY.

sorry, but adverse posession requires that the claimant act under a claim of right. A squatter knows that the squatter has no right to the property. Accordingly, a squatter can never claim by adverse possession. Period. Move on.

This is a classic case of bad reporting. Adverse possession was inherited from the English Common Law. It´s been around for centuries and it exists in some form or another in all 57 states. The kid has only been there since July. He has not established ownership. He will be ousted as soon as the bank can drag his stinky Brazilian rear into civil court. The cops are also acting stupidly here-- the moronic kid has announced to the world that he has no legal right to be in the house-- so they have probable cause to get a warrant for arrest and haul his breaking and entering butt into jail. So many stupid people in south Florida!

Thank you #14. Those were my thoughts as well. In any case, there are lots of steps to go through - and even if he somehow got title he´d lose it because he can´t pay the taxes on the place. My recollection is that adverse possession was there in part to quiet title if someone lived on a property long enough, cared for it, paid taxes, etc. and that it was to prevent someone from coming in later and claiming the land back. If someone claimed title during the period in which the person has to have adverse possession, the rights become contested, and here the bank has title already and is claiming it. So the reporting is extremely shallow and sloppy. And the moment the guy leaves the property to get groceries I suspect that the police can arrest him for trespassing if the bank presses charges, and they probably can cut off power and water as well. Bad, bad article.

This has been happening all over the country for several years now since all the foreclosures. I don´t understand why the police can´t throw them out for tresspassing. But they all seem to know to go to the city offices and get a certificate and why the city would even issue one if they can´t produce a title. This is the most screwed up law I´ve ever heard of. I have no doubt those neighbors in Boca will get rid of that little roach very soon. I understand there are lights on in the house so he must have had them hooked up. Wouldn´t he have to produce a rental agreement or proof of ownership? This makes my head explode!!

A RAND study pours buckets of cold water on the Obama administration’s claims that it has nearly reached 7 million sign-ups for Obamacare. The whole point of Obamacare, supposedly, was to insure the uninsured and bend the cost curve down. Those who had insurance were supposed to be able to keep it. Families were supposed to start saving about $2500 a year. If you believed the Obama administration. Reality, according to RAND‘s study, is that the Obama administration’s 7 million figure is deceptive. Supposing 7 million have actually signed up and paid their first premium — which is not a given,
