United Continental to cut
600 front-office jobs

Chicago Tribune, by Gregory Karp

United Continental Holdings Inc. will cut about 600 front-office jobs through voluntary and involuntary cuts, the company said Thursday as it announced disappointing financial losses for 2012. The world´s largest airline did not detail where cutbacks will take place, but Chicago is likely to be most affected considering the corporate headquarters and network operations center are in downtown Chicago and that Chicago O´Hare airport is one of the airline´s largest hubs. The job cuts were announced Thursday morning during a conference call about the airline´s profits. United officials said they were disappointed in the airline company´s 2012 performance

well why is your business going down...
let see sour & unfriendly flight attendents
nickle and dime you for every bag
no food unless you pay top dollar for their crap
never on time anymore
half the time miss connecting flights
TSA gropping everyone
baggage handlers destroying luggage and stealing from the bags
seats so close together your knees up against your chin
need I go on
and the sad part is they are better than most of the other airlines

Watch for further cuts as customers stop flying that airline. I experienced 4 mechanical delays (some over night)in 6 flights. And one of them they messed up my reservation

Their CEO sure makes happy talk. Whether it impresses the lost customers remains to be seen.

OTOH the airline does have an operating profit. The losses came from consolidating staff, buyouts, merging facilities, etc. Those should be one time expenses and end.

The grounding of the Dreamliners is bad. But Boeing may be on the hook for those losses.

Why stay in downtown Chicago? That must cost plenty.

Continental was based in Houston. Why stay in Chicago with high taxes when they can move the operations to Texas and get lower taxes and probably fewer union employees. Win-win.

Suddenly, with two roll-call votes, the messy, multi-issue battles of the 2014 elections have been refocused on two central issues that will put the GOP back in charge of Congress. The budget and debt-limit fights have been set aside for the time being, with the swift votes this week for a debt-limit extension and the earlier passage of a budget to keep the government running for the rest of this year. This means that the midterm election battles for the rest of this year will be turned into a clear referendum on the voters’ two foremost concerns: a weak, jobless

Los Angeles- In case you were wondering, things in California just got a little weird. Okay, maybe not “just.” Let me be more specific: The congressional election in California’s 33rd District, a coastal tract encompassing some of the wealthiest, most liberal quarters of Los Angeles County?—?Bel Air, Santa Monica, and Beverly Hills, to name a few?—?just got a little weird. On January 30, Henry Waxman, the district’s long-serving and notoriously cantankerous representative, surprised everyone by announcing he would retire at the end of this term. Since arriving in Congress in 1975, Waxman has been a dogged champion of progressive causes

My five-year-old is extravagantly furious at being thwarted. I have infringed her human rights by mildly suggesting that she turn off the television and put some clothes on. I can see the dark storm clouds gathering on her thunderous brow, her eyes narrowing, mouth pursed in Shakespearean displeasure as she reaches for the most hurtful, serpent’s tooth ingratitude she can think of. “You’re Not My Friend Any More!” To which I reply, swift as Lady Macbeth’s dagger, “I never was your friend in the first place, darling. The federal government may have shut its doors due to weather conditions — but the guards tasked to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier aren’t so quick to abandon their posts. With what’s being billed as the storm of the season dumping inches of snow on the Washington, D.C., region, leaving a cloud of closures in its wake — Capitol Hill, area schools, airports, Metro bus service and almost all government offices in Maryland, the capital city and Virginia — the stalwart sentries for some of America’s most revered military sites stand tall and fast.

For those who didn´t know much about Shirley Temple, her passing this week revealed two surprises. First, that her post-Hollywood career was dominated by public service. She ran (unsuccessfully) for Congress in 1967, served as a representative to the United Nations and was ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia. And second, she was a Republican. She was that rarest of things nowadays: a Hollywood star who admitted to voting for the GOP. Today, Hollywood appears uniformly liberal. But once upon a time, things were different. While researching my forthcoming book on Hollywood and politics, I was surprised to discover how many

Senate Democrats facing tough elections this year want the Internal Revenue Service to play a more aggressive role in regulating outside groups expected to spend millions of dollars on their races. In the wake of the IRS targeting scandal, the Democrats are publicly prodding the agency instead of lobbying them directly. They are also careful to say the IRS should treat conservative and liberal groups equally, but they’re concerned about an impending tidal wave of attack ads funded by GOP-allied organizations. Much of the funding for those groups is secret, in contrast to the donations lawmakers collect, which must be

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, MI – After a five-year hiatus, a Grand Rapids Township resident is again putting snow to good use by sculpting giant animals in his front yard. Stephen Garcia´s returning debut? A life-sized shark swimming in a wave that runs the length of his and his girlfriend´s home at 2040 Four Mile Road NE, east of Plainfield Avenue. Its bright red mouth – complete with pointy teeth – is large enough for a human to take a seat inside. The big fish has been turning heads since Garcia sprayed it with a coat of paint earlier this week.

I could write another post about how lawless Obama’s constant re-writing of law without regard for the text of said law is. It is lawless, and it does threaten the foundations of the republic — Charles Krauthammer and Jonathan Turley, one conservative, the other liberal, agree on that. It sets a horrible precedent for future presidents to rule by fiat. It is a violation of the spirit and purpose of the Constitution. Barack Obama is getting away with it because, as I’ve written before, he has hacked the Constitution. I’m not alone in understanding that Obama has hacked the Constitution

The Index, published Feb. 11, shows that America now ranks number 46, below countries like South Africa and France. The Index has been published annually since 2002, but the 2014 ranking for America marks one of the most significant declines ever reported. According to Christophe Deloire, the Reporters Without Borders Secretary General, the World Freedom Index is based on seven criteria: the level

It´s no surprise that Barack Obama´s authoritarian streak is revealing itself at last. It was always there; clearly apparent in his rhetoric (e.g., his envy of Chinese president Xi Jin-ping´s powers), his abuse of executive orders, his threats against Congress, his sultan with fly-whisk attitudes toward his opposition, and even his vacations, which reek more of third-world trash gamboling on the Riviera than any American leader (George W. Bush settled his mind by clearing brush in Texas, Reagan at his ranch in Santa Barbara. Obama unfortunately finds the brush already cleared in Martha´s Vineyard and Hawaii.)

President Obama has repeatedly suspended parts of the Affordable Care Act without the consent of Congress. The latest unilateral action happened Monday night, when the administration announced another delay of the employer mandate, the law´s provision that businesses with more than 50 employees must provide their employees with insurance starting in 2014 or pay large fines. In July, the president decreed the mandate wouldn´t be enforced at all in 2014, and last night administration officials declared that businesses with 50 to 99 employees wouldn´t be penalized in 2015. Republicans have denounced such actions as "lawless." But if what the president has

Less than 24 hours after President Obama illegally rewrote the law he had previously jammed down Boehner´s -- and the country´s -- throat, Boehner handed the budding dictator a clean debt-ceiling hike. Last October, Obama vindictively shut down the federal government upon his having refused to delay ObamaCare, which of course is exactly what he himself lawlessly did on February 10, 2014! Of course, Boehner is hardly in a position to argue now, having foolishly (immensely so) accepted responsibility for the shutdown.
