The renewed “discussion” about school shooters has raised many ideas — some well-intentioned, some not — about how to prevent and, to a lesser degree, to stop active shooters. Unfortunately, most are attempts to dance around the reality: the only effective way to immediately stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Preferably, multiple good guys. Mass rushes of unarmed teachers and children at armed killers, Tasers, and beanbag rounds are some of the more prominent suggestions being bandied about.(Snip Unfortunately, any such technology is absolutely unsuitable for responding to active shooters,
Comments: An experienced take on the dangers of "less than lethal" means of response to active shooters.
Extremely interesting. Well worth the time and effort to read.
Lindsey Vonn´s comeback attempt may be in jeopardy after she crashed in training at Copper Mountain, Colo., on Tuesday. The U.S. Ski Team confirmed that Vonn, who is trying to come back from major knee surgery, crashed Tuesday and is being evaluated. It is not clear whether she re-injured her right knee. She tore the ACL and MCL in that knee and fractured her tibia in a brutal crash on Feb. 5. "We have no reason to believe it´s anything significant right now," U.S. Ski Team spokesman Tom Kelly told the Associated Press.
Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath, was stabbed multiple times early today at his Bath County home and his son, Gus, is dead from a gunshot wound, authorities said. Gus Deeds had been released Monday following a mental health evaluation performed under an emergency custody order.(Snip) A source told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the emergency custody order, or ECO, allowed Gus Deeds to be held as long as four hours to determine whether he should be held longer, up to 72 hours, under a temporary detention order. The son was evaluated Monday by the Rockbridge Area Community Services Board in Lexington. An emergency custody
With every passing day, ObamaCare´s flaws are being exposed in painful ways for the American people. What started as a broken website—and nonexistent Spanish one—is now snowballing into a full-scale disaster that makes it increasingly clear this law can´t be fixed. Under ObamaCare, people are being recklessly exposed to identity theft and fraud through the dysfunctional website and navigator network. Under ObamaCare, President Obama´s broken promise—that people could keep the health plans and doctors they were happy with—has made casualties of those plans and providers. Now people have to scramble to find new plans and doctors that often cost more than before.
Virginia State Senator Creigh Deeds is in critical condition after he was reportedly stabbed by his son Austin (Gus) Deeds Tuesday morning at his home in Bath County. After attacking his father, the son, whose age is unknown, reportedly shot himself. He died from a gunshot wound, sources told WRC-TV. Law enforcement sources are investigating what led to the violence. Police were called to Deeds´ home at 7:25 a.m., according to the local news station. (Snip) n 2009, when Deeds was running against Republican Bob McDonnell, Gus Deeds and his sister Amanda helped out with their dad´s campaign and were
The director of national intelligence on Monday night released what appeared to be the original court document authorizing the National Security Agency to conduct sweeping collections of Americans’ communications records for counterterrorism purposes. The order, signed by the then-chief judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, was among nearly 1,000 pages of documents being released by James R. Clapper Jr. in response to lawsuits and a directive by President Obama. The documents also describe the NSA’s failure to abide by court-imposed rules to protect Americans’ privacy, and show that the agency was more interested in collecting cell site location data than
Two explosions, at least one caused by a suicide bomber, rocked Iran´s embassy in Lebanon on Tuesday, killing at least 23 people, including an Iranian cultural attaché, and hurling bodies, cars and debris across the street. A Lebanese-based al Qaeda-linked group known as the Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed responsibility for what it described as a double suicide attack on the Iranian mission in southern Beirut.(Snip) Security camera footage showed a man in an explosives belt rushing towards the outer wall of the embassy before blowing himself up, Lebanese officials said. They said the second explosion was caused by a car bomb
Military members, retirees and veterans have a few more reasons to be wary of politicians who say their top priority is to cut federal spending. The Congressional Budget Office on Wednesday released a report of more than 100 options for reducing budget deficits. It’s a timely product as House and Senate conferees strive to negotiate by mid-December a new debt-cutting deal to replace automatic budget cuts of sequestration. More than a few of the CBO options are fresh ideas to roll back compensation for categories of veterans or to raise TRICARE fees for military retirees, on suggestions that the government
The November tornadoes that raked the Midwest were unusual, possibly even record-breaking, but they had been forecast three days in advance. For some residents, though, the warning wouldn´t be enough. On Monday, emergency officials and damage experts were picking through the wreckage of what Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn called "the deadliest series of tornadoes Illinois has ever had in the month of November," with six people killed in Illinois and dozens more injured in communities across the Midwest. Violent weather also killed two Michigan residents. Officials said the twister that ripped through Washington, Ill., inflicting some of Sunday´s worst damage, may have
HOENIX - A wrongful death lawsuit brought by the family of slain Border Patrol agent Brian Terry has been dismissed by a federal judge on the grounds that a court settlement would interfere with the powers of the U.S. government, which has a compensation scheme of its own. Terry died in a shoot-out with Mexican drug cartel gunmen in southern Arizona in December 2010 in a case tied to a flawed bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF, gun-running operation that embarrassed the Obama administration and strained relations with Mexico. Last year Terry´s parents, Kent and Josephine Terry, filed a
Fifty three million people across the United States are in harm’s way as a powerful storm system will bring tornadoes and widespread damaging wind gusts to the Midwest, the National Weather Service said Sunday afternoon. "We obviously have a very dangerous situation on our hands and it´s just getting started," said Laura Furgione, deputy director of the National Weather Service. She added, "Get ready now." Parts of the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, lower-middle Mississippi Valley and Tennessee Valley are among the areas most at risk for widespread damaging winds and possible tornadoes, experts with the Weather Channel said.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The swirling lines from Linden Bateman´s pen have been conscripted into a national fight to keep cursive writing in American classrooms. Cursive. Penmanship. Handwriting. In years gone by, it helped distinguish the literate from the illiterate. But now, in the digital age, people are increasingly communicating by computer and smartphone. No handwritten signature necessary. Call it a sign of the times. When the new Common Core educational standards were crafted, penmanship classes were dropped. But at least seven of the 45 states that adopted the standards are fighting to restore the cursive instruction. THE ARGUMENT FOR CURSIVE Bateman,
The Obama administration has run aground on the president’s promise that if you like your health care plan, you can keep it: Scott Rasmussen finds that 55% of voters rate Obama’s performance on health care as “poor.” But, as Byron York notes, at least 27 Democratic senators made the same false promise to their constituents: The list includes the entire Democratic leadership in the Senate as well as Democrats facing tough re-election races in 2014, like Mary Landrieu, Mark Begich, and Kay Hagan. Let’s take just a couple of examples. First, Max Baucus: SEN. MAX BAUCUS (D-Mont.): “That is why one of
In the home stretch of the 2012 presidential campaign, from August to September, the unemployment rate fell sharply — raising eyebrows from Wall Street to Washington. The decline — from 8.1 percent in August to 7.8 percent in September — might not have been all it seemed. The numbers, according to a reliable source, were manipulated. And the Census Bureau, which does the unemployment survey, knew it. Just two years before the presidential election, the Census Bureau had caught an employee fabricating data that went into the unemployment report, which is one of the most closely watched measures of the economy. And a knowledgeable
The Times Of Israel is reporting that a team of negotiators led by White House adviser Valerie Jarrett has been conducting secret talks with Iran about it´s nuclear weapons program for the past year. The report states the deal submitted in Geneva earlier this month was a direct result of these secret year-long negotiations between teams headed by Jarrett and Iran´s Ali Akbar Salehi. That deal was ultimately rejected when France and Israel raised strong objections, and talks are expected to resume this Wednesday. The White House was very quick to issue a categorical denial of the report. According to
Barack Obama is the coolest president we’ve had since John F. Kennedy, at least according to conventional standards for such things. Obama has always been a brand as much as a politician, one that has been perceived as sleek, smart, and up to date. Then along came HealthCare.gov. Its failure to launch is a signal event in the long political battle over Obamacare and perhaps an inflection point in the president’s image. It’s hard to maintain a sense of truly being on the cutting edge of change when you can’t build a website. Obama’s cool was, in part, an artifact of world-class
Most women will tell you that other than the N-word, the C-word is the most vile in the English language never to be used. Cher apparently doesn´t hold such a belief, for she disturbingly took to Twitter Friday to call former Alaska governor Sarah Palin a "Dumb C Word": Cher ? @cher Follow Go to dictionary,& look up The “C"Word,....next 2 the definition...you’ll see a Pic of Sarah PALIN ! NO...WAIT ...SHES UNDER DUMB C WORD?? 12:11 PM - 15 Nov 2013 716 Retweets 834 favorites ReplyRetweetFavorite Three minutes later she put an exclamation point on it:
Carbohydrates are rotting our brains and contributing to devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s, an American neurologist has warned. David Perlmutter, from Florida, believes that even ‘good’ carbs, such as grains, are severely affecting our brains. And the staples of our modern diet aren’t only increasing the risk of dementia, but contributing to depression, epilepsy and headaches, he believes. [Snip] The solution? Going back to the days when our diet was mainly fat--with this making up 75 percent of our diet, and carbs just 5 percent. Protein intake should stay the same as it is, at about 20 percent.
A downbeat President Barack Obama repeatedly asked his worried supporters Monday night to help resurrect his spirits, following weeks of political disasters and personal humiliations caused by the cascading collapse of Obamacare. The distracted president railed against opponents and at one point appeared to forget the number of people in the Obamacare system during the rambling quarter-hour address. “My main message is I’m going to need your help, your energy, your faith, your ability to reach out to neighbors, kids and friends [and] co-workers,” he told listeners to the Internet broadcast arranged by his grass-roots group, Organizing for Action. But his worried
WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama says she won’t wear shorts on Air Force One again because the one time she did, it created “a huge stink.”(snip)Mrs. Obama was asked about her biggest fashion regret. She said she’s always happy with her outfits but that, quote, “sometimes I forget I’m the first lady and I’m running around in shorts.” She recalled her family’s first White House vacation, to the Grand Canyon in August 2009. Mrs. Obama said her wearing shorts getting off the plane “created a huge stink because people were like, ‘she’s wearing shorts getting off of Air Force One.’” She said her thought
On Tuesday, President Barack Obama conceded that he will have to "remarket" and "rebrand" Obamacare as public confidence in him and the healthcare law he championed has plummeted. Speaking at the Wall Street Journal CEO Summit, Obama addressed the failures of the Obamacare rollout and said while he was confident that the healthcare model his administration built, which he claimed worked off of the "existing private insurance system," would succeed, the law would have to be rebranded. “We are going to have to obviously remarket and rebrand,” Obama said. “And that will be challenging in this political environment.” When he
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) says everyone should stop talking so much about the 2016 presidential race, because doing so hurts President Obama, who´s only a year into his second term. "In this sense, I feel badly for President Obama. He just won a year ago, and everybody´s like, ´So, who´s next?´" Christie said Monday night at the Wall Street Journal CEO Council. "There is work to be done in this country. And as we shove him out the door, we minimize his ability to be an effective executive. And we shouldn´t do that." Even as he urged people to focus
President Barack Obama told the Wall Street CEO Council Tuesday that his administration has "reined in spending" and "cut our deficits by more than half." "After years of trillion-dollar deficits we reined in spending, wound down two wars and began to change a tax code that I believe was too skewed towards the wealthiest among us at the expense of the middle class," said Obama. "And since I took office, we have now cut our deficits by more than half. Add it all and businesses like yours have created 7.8 million new jobs over the past 44 months, we´ve gone farther
A day after his daughters´ spat over their disagreements on gay marriage spilled out messily into the public, former Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, released a statement urging that there not be a "distortion" of Liz Cheney´s views on the subject. The statement came a day after Mary Cheney and her wife, Heather Poe, blasted Liz Cheney, a Republican U.S. Senate candidate in Wyoming for her opposition to gay marriage. Here is Dick and Lynne Cheney´s full statement on the issue: "This is an issue we have dealt with privately for many years, and we are pained to see it
President Obama irked some conservatives with his recitation of the Gettysburg Address, which he read aloud as part of a project celebrating the 150th anniversary of famous Lincoln speech. For the project, spearheaded by documentarian Ken Burns, a number of politicians and other high-profile people recorded themselves reading the Gettysburg Address. However, Mr. Obama´s recording seems to be the only one that leaves the phrase "under God" out of a certain line. Some conservatives took offense to the president´s reading. "Lincoln added ´Under God´ as he was looking out over battlefield. why would obama remove?" Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said on Twitter. Gettysburg
