New York City Employers Can No

New York Observer, by Jane Gayduk

Today, the New York City Council was the first in the nation to pass a law that prohibits employers from considering an applicant’s current employment status while making their hiring decisions. Job advertisers have long filtered applicants according to their present employment status, selecting only those persons who are currently employed. Now, New York will be the first city in the country providing people with the opportunity to file a lawsuit based on unemployment discrimination such as this. “Imagine spending every day and night for months upon months upon months

I taught graduate courses in Human Resource Management for a quarter of a century, and would note that federal employment laws are suffocating to the employer. And if you add in state and local employment laws, especially from the far left states, you can get a sense about the likelihood of a company expanding in one of those states.

This latest one is a pip.

So can the applicant volunteer the information? If not, is it a restraint of free speech?

Can they confirm anything with your last employer?

This reminds me of proposals intended to help ex-convicts find jobs by shielding various information. I don´t know how many of those well-intended laws are on the books in various places.

Useless law since your employment status is very apparent by the employment dates you list on your application. On the other hand, what in heck is wrong with employers in this economy who´ve decided to not even look at unemployed people. You are too stupid to run a business if you use employment status as your first criteria in these times and I hope anyone who does this finds themselves unemployed so they´ll know what an evil fool they´ve been.

After remarks he made at the National Action Network conference this week and various actions on voting rights and equality he’s taken over the past several months, MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry is starting to wonder if Attorney General Eric Holder is “the Obama we had been hoping for.” Even though she admitted it’s not entirely fair to “separate” Holder from President Barack Obama, that’s the question the host posed to her panel Saturday morning. “I think he may be the greatest addition to the entire Obama Administration,” Fordham University’s Christina Greer told Harris-Perry, saying the “foundational work”

KIEV/MOSCOW - Armed separatists took virtual control of a city in eastern Ukraine on Saturday and Kiev prepared troops to deal with what it called an "act of aggression by Russia". Pro-Russian activists carrying automatic weapons seized government buildings in Slaviansk and set up barricades on the outskirts of the city. Official buildings in several neighboring towns were also attacked. The developments have increased concerns of a possible "gas war" that could disrupt energy supplies across the continent. Of the plans that states have hatched for the Affordable Care Act, none has been bolder than that of Vermont, which wants to implement a single-payer health-care system, along the lines of what you might find in Britain or Canada. One government-operated system will cover all 620,000 of Vermont’s citizens. The hope is that such a system will allow Vermont to get costs down closer to Canada’s, as well as improve health by coordinating care and ensuring universal coverage. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators. As the midterm elections approach and the administration’s incompetence, along with the distaste for the president’s signature ObamaCare legislation, drive the party’s chances down further, the make-believe coalition of opposites may well crumble if the opposition doesn’t blow it.
