Not a ´nation of takers,´ Mr.
President? Check the numbers

American Enterprise, by Nicholas Eberstadt

It is official: America is *not* a nation of takers. How do we know? Because the president of the United States just said so. President Obama used the occasion of his second inaugural address to take on the question of moral hazard emanating from our burgeoning entitlement state. In his estimate, there is no such risk — or at least none worth mentioning. Here is the inaugural passage in question: "We recognize that no matter how responsibly we live our lives, any one of us, at any time, may face a job loss, or a sudden illness,

Obama and his wife are two of the biggest takers themselves. How in the world does it cost over a billion a year for two people´s upkeep? Let´s not even bring up the dog which costs 100K a year just to be walked. Why in the hell can´t a dog figure out how to walk on it´s own?

Thanks to the Obamboozler and the complicit knee-pad press we´ve been turned into a broken nation of dumbed-down, barely aware, dope-smoking, self-absorbed, media-influenced, celebrity-obsessed, Food-Stamp wielding, Escalade driving, Kool-Aid drinking, government-dependent, entitlement rich, busted-butt, free-loading, Obamaphone carrying, Low-Fo Federal teat-suckers!
Unfortunately that´s too long for a headline...

Actually, I was rather surprised that Mr. o. was aware of the term "takers". I didn´t think he listened to a thing the "opposition" says. Perhaps he heard the term from the co-potus, ValJar. You know, the "revenge" Queen, punishing those who do not agree with her vision for America.

You know what I would really like? There´s lots of indications that this country cannot continue on this fiscal path, but you either have the people who love Obama for fixing the economy or the people who are stockpiling ammunition and food. Neither seems very realistic. Is there no one with an understanding of economics and markets who can identify what is likely to happen, when, and what the indicators would be?

Too Important to Fail? Big Insurance Will

It’s early yet and there’s a chance that the skewed Obamacare numbers of young and healthy enrollees being dwarfed by old and sick ones may not be as bad as some analysts are predicting. But Big Insurance companies who salivated at the chance for tens of millions of new customers driven into their laps by a coercive government didn’t take any chances when the law was being written. By dint of the millions of dollars they’ve contributed to the campaigns of both parties, they were able to sneak into Obamacare a bailout provision that would have taxpayers footing the bill for

His healthcare coverage under the Affordable Care Act was supposed to begin January 1, but Rand Paul on Sunday said he remains unsure if he and his family are covered. At least one member of the Paul family is, though, albeit erroneously. The Kentucky senator held up the Medicaid card his son received through the Kentucky exchange. “We didn’t try to get him Medicaid, I’m trying to pay for his insurance,” Paul said, “but they automatically enrolled him in Medicaid. For a month they wouldn’t talk to him because they said they weren’t sure he existed. He had to go

The former president and the New York mayor-elect may need one another for symbolic reasons, but their similar message mask a much deeper ideological divide. When New York City´s new mayor, Bill de Blasio, took the oath of office on New Year´s Day, he asked former President Bill Clinton to swear him in on the City Hall steps. On the surface, the symbolism seemed to make sense for both men. After all, De Blasio is, in many ways, a Clinton kid. He worked in the Clinton administration as a top deputy to then-HUD Secretary and now New York Governor Andrew

PORTLAND, Maine — Erick Bennett, a conservative Portland consultant who has launched a Republican primary campaign against incumbent U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, says his experience with the justice system — which he obtained when he was convicted of domestic violence assault 10 years ago — is driving him toward what he calls a “pro-family” agenda. Bennett held a news conference Monday in Portland, during which he talked about his campaign, the domestic violence conviction, and controversy over his self-described role as a staffer for Gov. Paul LePage’s 2010 campaign — a role that others in LePage’s campaign team said Bennett

It’s a stretch, but what is happening today in France is being compared to the revocation of 1685. In that year, Louis XIV, the Sun King who built the Palace of Versailles, revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had protected French Protestants – the Huguenots. Trying to unite his kingdom by a common religion, the king closed churches and persecuted the Huguenots. As a result, nearly 700,000 of them fled France, seeking asylum in England, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa and other countries. The Huguenots, nearly a million strong before 1685, were thought of as the worker bees of France. They left

California Gun Law Paves

SACRAMENTO -- Gun registration had always seemed like the “line in the sand” — a proposal that would so offend the nation’s gun-rights advocates that they would bring out their full political muscle to stop it. Yet a California law mandating government record-keeping for all new long-gun purchases goes into effect on Jan. 1 and few people even seem to know about it. This year, gun owners were relieved that Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed the toughest gun-control measures that came to his desk, including one that would have banned sales of almost all semi-automatic rifles. But back in 2011, after

WASHINGTON — To many Americans, the war on poverty declared 50 years ago by President Lyndon B. Johnson has largely failed. The poverty rate has fallen only to 15 percent from 19 percent in two generations, and 46 million Americans live in households where the government considers their income scarcely adequate.(Snip)But conservatives, like Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, have looked at the poverty statistics more skeptically, contending that the government has misspent its safety-net money and needs to focus less on support and more on economic and job opportunities.

Over the past four years, the unemployment rate has dropped from a high of 10% in October 2009 to 7% this past November. The fact remains, however, that an unemployment rate of 7% is much too high, and that even this troubling rate masks the true weakness of the labor market. A quick review of the most recent labor-market data tells the story. A broader measure of unemployment includes both workers who want full-time jobs but have to settle for part-time work and workers who are marginally attached to the labor force. Defined this way, the unemployment rate in November was

You may have heard about the Russian ship trapped in Antarctic ice. Various ice-breakers from other nations have attempted to free it, but to no avail. The ship is encased in tons of floating sea ice. What many in the mainstream media have failed to mention is that the ship was attempting to study global warming at the South Pole. Along for the ride were some high-roller eco-tourists wanting to see some glaciers dramatically breaking off and falling into the sea. After the researchers and tourists were rescued, the ship’s crew stayed behind in the hopes of piloting their ship once it breaks

Two days after Christmas I found myself in a doctor´s office in New Jersey at eight o´clock in the morning. As I sat in the waiting room, a middle-aged woman came in and began a discussion with the receptionist. It seemed that her daughter, who would turn 26 on December 31, was trying to figure out what to do about health insurance. The woman explained that her daughter had been on a policy with a low co-pay and deductible (she didn´t specify what they were) that cost $240 a month.
