Left off Bam’s train
New York Post, by Michael Goodwin

A Favorite apocryphal tale goes like this: A New Jersey town where 90 percent of the residents are Irish and 10 percent Jewish had an election. The Irish candidate got 90 percent of the vote, and the Jewish candidate got 10 percent, whereupon the Irish victor celebrated by lamenting the clannishness of the Jews. Sore winners have always been with us, but they are especially grating when they include the president of the United States. “It makes me so sad,” a self-employed woman I know said during Monday’s inauguration.

Author Scott McEwen — who collaborated with the late Chris Kyle in writing the book “American Sniper” — bumped into Jesse Ventura on a Mexican beach last week and begged the former pro wrestler to drop his libel case against Kyle’s widow. The best seller — subtitled “The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History’’ — tells of a 2006 incident at a bar in Coronado, Calif., when Kyle allegedly interrupted Ventura’s harangue against Navy SEALS, President George W. Bush and US military policy by punching him in the face. Ventura, the former governor of Minnesota, filed a suit

Halbig v. Sebelius and three related cases are, in the words of one prominent ObamaCare supporter, “probably the most significant existential threat to the Affordable Care Act.” The goal of these lawsuits is to stop the IRS from creating a $700 billion entitlement without Congress. If ObamaCare cannot survive without such egregious executive overreach, perhaps it does not deserve to survive. Here’s an overview of the issue. The Halbig plaintiffs have appealed an adverse ruling by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. (In one of the related cases,

As Andrew Tilghman at Military Times reports, Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, is telling the troops that, while they may not be getting much in the way of pay raises, they will be better off for it and that: ... the historic reductions in military compensation he proposing is, in part, an effort to keep them safe. More money for readiness and equipment that will pay off on the battlefield even if it means less for the home front where: compensation changes — if they become law — would reduce many troops annual compensation by more than $1,000. The pay raise that is

In the mid ’80s, I was living in Santa Fe, N.M., making a shabby living writing magazine articles, when a peculiar assignment came my way. I had become friendly with a group of Tibetan exiles who lived in a compound on Canyon Road, where they ran a business selling Tibetan rugs, jewelry, and religious items. The Tibetans had settled in Santa Fe because its mountains, adobe buildings, and high-altitude environment reminded them of home. The founder of the Tibetan community was a man named Paljor Thondup. President Barack Obama on Wednesday will call for a four-year, $302 billion transportation bill to replace the law that expires at the end of September, while repeating his pitch for tax reform to fill some of that gap. The White House didn’t say whether Obama will offer a full reauthorization proposal — for the first time in his presidency — or simply a “vision.” But he has been clear recently that he wants to use money from overhauling corporate taxes to make up for chronic shortfalls in the Highway Trust Fund’s gasoline tax revenues. On paper, the bill’s annual price tag would

When will the leaders at Ole Miss finally learn? When will they finally figure out that some things are above the pay grade of college chancellors and administrators? When will they learn that no matter how hard you try to protect students from the stupidity and hatefulness of a very few people, stupidity and hatefulness will always be among us? The goal of trying to make Ole Miss a hate-free zone is about as elusive as trying to make it an evil-free zone. And when will Ole Miss learn that no matter what you do, and how often you apologize, the national

The dramatic capture ended his reign as one of the world´s most notorious organized crime bosses, and was a major victory for the Mexican government in a long, brutal war. Washington´s green revolving door keeps on spinning. President Obama’s Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood has left the administration and joined an electric bus company he subsidized and praised while in office. Proterra Inc. makes buses that require no gasoline or diesel – they run on electricity and fuel cells. You can see why electric buses would appeal to cities that want to clean the air and reduce fuel usage: City buses run a predictable number of miles a day, averting worries about dead batteries. Also, a fleet of buses creates economies of scale that can make recharging infrastructure economical. Proterra

Were he alive today, Richard Nixon would have to doff his hat to Barack Obama. Compared with how the Obama administration has swept under the rug the Benghazi attacks of September 11, 2012, Nixon’s attempt to cover up the Watergate burglary was rank amateurism. To be fair, Nixon’s team of Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell, and Dean were not in the same league as Obama’s, which includes not only his cabinet but most of the national media and much of Congress.
