Smithsonian curators scout
for Obama artifacts

WASHINGTON- As crowds descended and the inauguration unfolded, a few museum curators in Washington kept watch for symbols and messages that would make history. The Smithsonian´s National Museum of African American History and Culture will open during President Barack Obama´s second term, and one section will feature a large display about the first black president. Curators have been working since 2008 to gather objects, documents and images that capture his place in history. Curator William Pretzer ventured into the crowd Monday, mostly looking for memorabilia that had a personal touch - beyond the T-shirts and buttons hawked by vendors.

If they are looking for artifacts at the inauguration site, they can find tons of trash everywhere, lots of used condoms (but only pick those up with rubber gloves), and lots and lots of drug paraphernalia.

If they want artifacts from NØbama´s first term of his reign of terror (oops, I mean his first term in office – but it’s the same thing no matter how you look at it), I would say look in the sewer for the pages of the Constitution and the Bible that he used as toilet paper, because that was all the respect he had for any of it.

Of course, you can check his room for his beloved and well-read copies of ´´Mein Kampf´´, ´´The Communist Manifesto´´ and the ´´koran´´.

EDGARTOWN, Mass. — President Barack Obama opened the first summer vacation of his second term Saturday on Martha’s Vineyard, trading Washington debates over the budget, government surveillance and his health care overhaul for a hoped-for carefree week filled with golf, beach outings and hanging-out time with family and friends. (Snip) As Air Force One flew north, Obama got into a vacation mindset by trading his suit and tie for more suitable attire: khakis and a blue shirt with rolled-up sleeves. I’m sure there’s a logical explanation for the sudden, mysterious appearance at the site of a car accident in Missouri of a priest who prayed with the teenage victim of the wreck, comforting the youngster and the responders until it became possible to rescue her. Despite the fact that the police had blocked the highway for three miles in each direction and weren’t letting anyone through and that none of the 80 pictures taken at the scene by the rescuers showed the priest in any of them, there’s an easy explanation for the priest’s presence that we’re all missing, right? Right?

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid appeared on radio station KNPR on Friday and spent a good amount of time talking about unprecedented Republican obstruction in Congress. In response to a caller’s question about conservatives hoping for Obama’s failure at the outset, Reid brought up Mitch McConnell‘s one-term-for-Obama pledge, and said of Republicans opposing practically everything Obama does, “I hope that it’s based on substance, not the fact that he’s an African-American.” Reid was quickly and roundly condemned, with a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee calling

President Barack Obama urged military veterans to defend his signature health-care law and press Republican lawmakers to end budget cuts that threaten future spending on benefits. In remarks to the Disabled American Veterans National Convention in Orlando, Florida, Democrat Obama said critics of the health insurance expansion that he championed are spreading “misinformation.” Veterans benefits won’t be affected by the Affordable Care Act, he said. “Don’t let them fool you: no one’s taking away your benefits,” Obama said. “If you already have health insurance or health care from the VA, you do not have to do a thing.”

As NPR media reporter David Folkenflik put it, “You think of stories like the Pentagon Papers, Watergate, these are all stories where The Washington Post led the nation’s understanding, the world’s understanding of some major issues.” Outside the liberal media, you wonder how long Post fans can wallow in their Nixon-crumbling polyester “glory days” in the early 1970s. But nostalgia ruled as the Graham family sold the Post to Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon.com.

President Barack Obama announced Friday afternoon that the White House will publicly release a summary of the legal authorities through which the National Security Agency conducts its controversial surveillance programs. ´Given the history of abuse by governments,´ he said, it is important to explain how such a program is managed, and - equally important - what it may not do. He described his working relationship with Vladimir Putin as ´candid´ and ´blunt,´ and seemed to dismiss concerns that the Russian president´s body language indicated a lack of willingness to work with the United States.
