| Today, just before taking his official inauguration oath, President Obama attended church, receiving the accolades of the media for doing so. Obama, of course, has a rather checkered history with religion; his old pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, used to deliver fiery anti-American, anti-Israel diatribes from the pulpit. At Obama’s first inauguration, Rev. Joseph Lowery gave his invocation by listing racial slurs and implying that white people were responsible for the world’s ills. Now Obama’s newest pastor, Rev. Ronald Braxton, is joining their prestigious company.

Shapiro is way off here, ascribing his definition of "obstacles" to what Rev Braxton said, and by associating him with Rev. Wright, I guess because of their race. There is no question the AME Church leadership and most of its members supported Obama and were probably delighted he didn´t slight them this year as he did in 2009 by not holding the pre-inaugural Prayer Service at our "national cathedral", Metropolitan, AMEC. Clinton held both of his there in part because virtually all of his Black campaign advisors and senior Black appointees were AME´s. Bush 41 held an event there and Bush 43 gave a speech at it´s counterpart, First AMEC in Los Angeles.
I believe this is Zero´s first visit to Metropolitan, the home church to Washington´s Black elite starting with Vernon Jordan, and continuing to business leaders, former cabinet members and ambassadors, so I doubt Ronald is his pastor.

Sorry, I do not agree that Ben´s commentary is way off the mark. During the last four years, if we had not heard talk of Obama being some sort of "messiah," seen the artwork with a halo around his head, heard his followers refer to him as their "lord and savior," then maybe we could say Mr. Shapiro is reading too much into this event. Behind the pulpit of a Christian church, no matter WHAT the event, Jesus Christ is the only One to be held with such worshipful adoration.

#7, you´re correct that Ben said it...he ascribed Newsweek’s characterization of Obama to Braxton and gave his own interpretation of his remarks...it is a tribal thing so perhaps he just couldn´t translate the language spoken in this church since its founding in 1838, or understand why this was the venue Mandela chose when he first visited DC or why MLK, Jr. spoke there on many occasions.
Frederick Douglass was a member and his funeral was held there as were those of Blanche Kelso Bruce, born a slave but became the first African American to serve a full term in the U.S. Senate, and Mrs. Rosa Parks. William Taft was the first president to worship at Metropolitan.
There is a photo of the AME bishops “laying on the hands” and praying to God for Obama’s safety at the 2008 church convention in St Louis, twenty four hours before his plane had to make an emergency landing back in that same city. Praying to God, not Obama.

It is amazing just how wrong economists were in their predictions for the number of jobs that were to be created in March. The “consensus” figure was 200,000 — a far cry from the actual number created which was 88,000. Totally “unexpected,” as usual. In one way, you can’t blame them. After a better than average gain in February of 236,000 (revised upward this month to 268,000), along with some positive numbers in housing and consumer spending, there were no doubt many analysts who began breathing a sigh of relief and believing that the long-awaited jobs recovery was upon us.

The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce. Ninety million. People not in the labor force grew by 663,000, and now 90 million. That´s the labor force participation rate. This is 1979 levels.
