When Algerian commandos initiated a raid Thursday to free hostages being held at a remote natural-gas complex, it was apparently a surprise to the top levels of the Obama administration as well as America’s key international allies. American workers were believed to be at the sprawling facility, and while details remain sketchy, U.S. officials said Friday that at least one American was killed. That Algeria didn’t inform the U.S.—much less collaborate with it—before launching the raid should come as no surprise. Since 9/11, both the Bush and Obama administrations have tried to cultivate a relationship with Algeria’s military,
The interest of the Obama Administration would be to prolong the ordeal, to set up some kind of ransom deal. It would reward the Radical Islamists for taking hostages and encouragement to continue taking hostages. The correct thing to do is attack quickly with deadly force, and not pay ransom. The message must be, if the Radical Islamists take hostages, those Islamists will be dead withing a few hours, with no hope for ransom.
If we had a free press, our people would learn that doors being slammed in our face is happening all over the world. While the Idiot was in Burma, a meeting was taking place forming a coalition in Asia. Obama was told he was not welcome. One of the partners in this coalition was Japan. Because we have a corrupt press and a potus who is in a constant state of denial, the USA has left the stage of foreign diplomacy/action, and our citizens are completely unaware of this.
The press is disgusting. They have a narrative and by God they will stick to it. Obama is their messiah and their love and admiration of him trumps their love of county, if they ever had any fondness for the United States. They will never peruse a story that could possibly be considered negative towards Obama. You will be presented with only Obama approved news. Get used to it.
Not to worry. Obama´s new cabinet will straighten things out. /s Our government is currently staffed by figureheads. Not one is capable of the position they hold. I´m withholding judgement for now but Obama´s coziness with the Brotherhood may be a factor in Algeria´s actions.
Yeah, and here´s one regarding total loss of faith in the US by a long standing ally, one ZeroHedge posted on the 14th. Did anyone know Germany is pulling all its physical gold from the US and France; 45 percent is in the US and 11 percent in France? Oh yeah and Germany is in the top three owners of the stuff. Think that might start a few collapses real soon if it´s in fact true? Me too.
The saddest part of these postings is they all may be equally true. We have such a wide selection from the menu at the Bitter Fruit Café, the only venture ever successfully run by Obama. Such plenty to choose from.
I think it´s as simple as they didn´t see a need too. It was an Algerian problem on Algerian soil and they would deal with as they saw fit. What would consulting Obama or Cameron beforehand have done. Algeria didn´t want military aid. They certainly didn´t want their advice.
We need to repair our relations with them. From what I´ve read Hillary didn´t show them much respect last fall when trying to gain their cooperation in Mali.
What passes for journalism in this country is pathetic. If those people did their job Obama would NEVER have been elected president in ´08.Sad to say but the alternative at that time was only marginally better.
Algeria did not launch a rescue mission. They launched a counter-attack in response to being attacked by terrorists. Algeria did not ask for permission. They have been at war fighting rebels and terrorists for decades. What they did was SOP for them. Hostage and civilian safety is secondary to them in situations like this.
The left and the media does not like anyone that actually fights terrorists so they condemn what Algeria did.
How likely that all the hostages that died were actually being used as human shields?
The unpublished story is AQ brutality, and that AQ has been at war with the rest of civilization that isn´t like them.
Far too much sympathy for AQ from the left and the media.
This Administration would have leaked info on the attack. The Algerians are right not to trust them. And they really don´t need anyone telling them how to fight. They´ve been fighting somebody since 1939.
#1 and #2 are sad but true We are losing the Allies from our different conflicts since WWII. We have spat in their faces and it´s not appreciated. Our friends know they are on their own now and can´t count on US.
Unfortunately it works both ways. Americans who are planning trips to different parts of the world should pay close attention to how Obama is handling our foreign policy. At this point there isn´t a place in the world where I would feel safe as a tourist.
Arab leaders know who Obama is & his relationship with The Muslim Brotherhood. The terrorists were from Libya, Tunisia & Egypt... where Obama trained the Mo Bro´s on how to invade nations under the guise of democracy... We call it Community Organizing...
Chilling, but I think I have stumbled across one possible reason…I posted a thread, below, from AllAfrica.com with the note that it assembles and distributes for “Magharebia”, as it does for most publications in Africa…finally overlooked the risk that it may be some Islamist radical site and went directly to the “Magharebia” website http://www.magharebia.com/cocoon/awi/xhtml1/en_GB/homepage/
SHOCK….this site is sponsored by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM)...Why would Algeria share their intent with a military apparatus in a war zone which is in the media game and commissioning North African writers of unknown loyalty to periodically write articles for them?
Some LDotter with a real understanding of our DoD may be able to shed light on whether this is S.O.P. or something else...
North Africa: Morocco Terror Risk Spikes http://www.lucianne.com/thread/?artnum=719715
Obama has already demonstrated to the world that he doesn´t care one bit if Americans die unless their bodies can be used to further one of his socialist/marxist agendas. Secrets told to your neighborhood gossip are safer than they are going to the White House.
Algerians face the day-to-day reality of dealing with monsters from the Islamic world. They know there is no negotiating with them and they do not have the slightest hesitation to kill them where ever they find them. The libtard idiots of the Øbama Administration would rather deal with them in a law enforcement, human rights atmosphere the terrorists use to gain time and advantage in the media. Algerians are not going to fall for that nonsense, so go on dealing with the Muslims terrorists in the correct ways the terrorists understand. When your own butt is on the line, you tend to ignore socialist, liberal fantasies.
Interesting catching glimpses of this throughout the day. Blurbs on Fox News about how the prezzy was working closely with allies in Algeria, to headlines on Drudge how the Won is struggling to clearly understand what happened. All the while, pretending to be in the loop, while clearly having been left out.
I would hazard to say general mistrust is why. After the botched raid with the French to rescue their hostage, it becomes to the world where the US stands...
The Algerians know that if they advise or bring the Obamabots into the loop, they´ll forfeit their autonomy. The Obamabots would fly in (including ultrasensitive female advisors) and spend two weeks talking, talking, talking, telling the Algerians how to negotiate and respect the "rights" of the terrorists.
You think the Algerians haven´t noticed how the USA has been prosecuting its own soldiers for taking photos of terrorists with panties on their heads?? The Algerians want to be able to kill, maim, and torture terrorists in any way they like without having the Obamabots protesting in horror and reporting them to the Hague for endless investigation and prosecution.
Oh c´mon! Does anybody really believe the propaganda that the Obama administration was "surprised"?
Even the writer signals to readers that he´s not a total fool ... or a total tool. Note the third word in this phrase from the first line: ..."it was apparently a surprise to the top levels of the Obama administration..."
What happened in Algeria is a perfect example of Obama´s "leading from behind." What that really means is that under Obama, the US doesn´t lead at all. Obama wanted the Algerians to take total control.
And the truth is, Obama doesn´t care that Americans and other Westerners were slaughtered by the Islamists. Oh, he might cry crocodile tears for "the families of the victims;" and he might repeat that increasingly meaningless bromide, "We will not rest until the perpetrators are brought to justice." But the reality is, he doesn´t care about a few white Western capitalists.
No disrespect to Macaulay Culkin (#ALLDISRESPECTTOTHEPIGEONLADY), but we prefer The Pet Collective´s retelling of Home Alone to the original movie. Mostly because Kevin McCallister is now played by an adorable pug puppy. And if a pug puppy setting booby traps for teddy bear burglars isn´t adorable enough for you, the video also narrated by a small child. So forget Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. Forget Elf. This is the only Christmas movie you need to watch this year. (Snip for video)As you might suspect, the pug, named Jackson Rosa, could not be more over it...
I’m not sure what Chris Matthews was doing with President Obama yesterday, but it wasn’t hardball. It wasn’t even softball. It was more like wiffle ball. Everyone knew going in that the MSNBC host would be a sympathetic interviewer. But he knew he would be graded on his aggressiveness, so I expected at least a few fastballs. Uh uh. Instead, in a half-hour sitdown, there was one challenging question. Just one. It was as though Matthews was channeling Jay Carney. Matthews is a likable guy with a passion for politics, but he left his interviewing chops at the door. The
WASHINGTON — Sen. Ted Cruz, elected 13 months ago by actual voters, said Thursday he’d prefer to see state legislators pick U.S. senators – as they were until a century ago, when the 17th Amendment came along. Direct election of senators has eroded states’ rights, Cruz argued, speaking to a ballroom filled with conservative state lawmakers from around the country. “If you have the ability to hire and fire me,” he said, “I’m a lot less likely to break into your house and steal your television. So there’s no doubt that was a major step toward the explosion of federal power and
I´m sitting at my desk, looking at a photograph of a gangrenous foot. It is a bloated thing in hues of phlegmatic gray rot, sanguine inflammation, melancholic black bile, and choleric open sores — exhibiting all the humors of a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Above the photograph, in bold white capitals on a dull, matte background are the words “smoking causes peripheral vascular disease.” The photograph is helpfully labeled “gangrene.” Below the photograph, in a bland sans-serif typeface with letters an eighth of an inch high, is “Marlboro Red.” This is a pack of Australian cigarettes,
Come January, when some number of Americans have bought insurance on the new health exchanges and are starting to use the services, you can expect another controversy to arise when many of them find out just how few doctors and hospitals they have access to. Call it “doc shock,” though the biggest outcry will not come when people try to schedule an appointment with their physician, but when someone gets sick and they learn they cannot go to whatever top-notch hospital they want, only to the hospital that is included in their plan. The problem varies across the country. In Washington,
Last month in San Francisco, President Obama called on Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform. His speech was novel in many respects: The president used the backdrop of a community center in Chinatown to remind voters that immigrants are racially diverse. Also, for the first time in prepared remarks, the president signaled that he would consider a piecemeal approach to immigration reform long favored by Republican leaders in the House of Representatives. What got the most attention, however, was an unscripted exchange between Obama and Ju Hong, an undocumented UC Berkeley graduate who interrupted the president, calling on him to use
No matter how you spell it, ice is a four letter word Friday. Just ask folks living anywhere from Texas to Tennessee. Those areas are in the bulls eye of a treacherous ice storm, threatening to coat everything in its path with up to an inch of frozen water. Ice is slippery, but also heavy. It tends to bring down tree limbs and power lines when accumulations get thick. In Tennessee, Memphis Light, Gas and Water has 426,000 customers and is ready for the worst. "MLGW employees have been monitoring this winter storm situation and we have all of our
U.S. authorities have charged 49 Russian diplomats and their spouses with conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, alleging that they stole $1.5 million from the American government via a years-long Medicaid scam. According to a criminal complaint made public today, the former and current diplomats lied about their income and citizenship status in order to qualify for the health benefits, which they used towards pregnancy care, births, and post-natal medical needs. They were also charged with conspiracy to steal government funds and make false statements relating to health care matters, reports the Associated Press. The complaint notes that medical costs associated with
Seduced and then disappointed by a hipster who turned out just to be another solipsistic boomer, now chastened yet still hopeful for change (if no longer swept away by the promise of Hope and Change), young Americans are ready to ditch Barack Obama. Things had been getting rocky for a while, but seeing the dawning of the Age of Obamacare in its full glory seems to have been the final indignity. The young will of course never acknowledge that maybe their old-fogey parents were right all along, but they do understand that what they thought was going to be a
John Dramani Mahama, who was in the African National Congress with Nelson Mandela, remembers what it was like when Prisoner No. 46664 came out of jail: Freedom on the African continent was a reality for which we were willing to fight. Nevertheless, I think we’d resigned ourselves to the likelihood that Mandela would remain a prisoner until his death, and South Africans would not experience equality until well after our lifetimes. Then on Feb. 11, 1990, the miraculous happened; Mandela was released. The world was spellbound. We wondered what we would do if we were in his shoes. We all waited for
President Obama’s message for the coming year is going to be a renewed focus on “income inequality.” Or as Bloomberg News puts it: Obama Decries Income Gap That Has Widened on His Watch. One of the president’s agenda items on this is raising the minimum wage. President Obama backs a proposal from Democratic members of Congress to raise it to $10.10 per hour. On that front, fast-food workers around the country are walking out on the job and holding protests today, with one Detroit fast-food employee arguing his $7.40 per hour constituted “slave wages.” Rallies and protests are scheduled in
It’s not the voters who hate Obamacare the most who are going to matter in next year’s elections. It’s the independents who frequently side with Democrats but could, if propelled by a distaste for the health care law, take a serious look at the GOP in 2014. And on this front, Democrats have a big problem with one of their most crucial constituencies—white women. Polling provided to National Journal by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that white women have soured considerably on the law, especially in the month since its botched rollout. The skepticism runs especially deep among blue-collar women,
I have never been much of a conspiracy theorist. For me it was always Oswald by himself from the Texas School Book Depository and nothing in the intervening fifty years has disabused me of this notion. For the most part, I’m an Occam’s Razor kind of guy — the most obvious explanation is likely to be true. (Snip) To put it bluntly, Occam’s Razor has moved. Things that were once possibilities now seem almost certainties to me. Principal among those is that Obama’s academic records are perpetually unavailable for a reason — and that reason is most likely that they reveal
One of President Obama´s chief political assets has been his ability to excite young people like almost no politician in history. But the days of America´s youth fawning over the president are over. A new Harvard University Institute of Politics poll released Wednesday confirms what other surveys have shown in recent months: Millennials have soured on Obama so much this year that their opinion of him largely mirrors the American public´s. Even though Obama does not ever have to face another election, he should be worried about the findings for a couple of reasons, which we will dive into momentarily.
A stunning new study unveiled on Fox News´ Hannity finds that President Barack Obama’s White House calendar records just one face-to-face meeting between Obama and his Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in the more than three-and-a-half years leading up to the disastrous Obamacare launch. The startling statistic comes from a new Government Accountability Institute (GAI) analysis of Obama’s own official White House calendar, as well as the Politico presidential calendar, and raises new questions about Obama’s executive leadership and management throughout the implementation of his singular legislative achievement. More alarming still, the president’s schedule lists 277 private
[Video] President Obama on Wednesday declared that addressing income inequality would be the focus of “all” of the White House’s efforts “for the rest of my presidency.” In a sweeping address that touched on raising the minimum wage, investing in infrastructure and ending tax breaks for the wealthy, Obama warned that the American economy has become “profoundly unequal,” declaring economic mobility the “challenge of our time.” “The combined trends of increasing inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe,” he said in an hour-long
Just over two weeks ago, MSNBC host Martin Bashir delivered a harsh piece of commentary that culminated in the suggestion that someone should “s-h-i-t” in former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin‘s (R-AK) mouth. Bashir offered an abject apology on his next broadcast, but a chorus of critics continued to demand action against the host. After a reported “vacation” for the host earlier this week, Bashir announced, Wednesday afternoon, that MSNBC and Martin Bashir are parting ways. Here’s the statement from Martin Bashir, via email: After making an on-air apology, I asked for permission to take some additional time out around the Thanksgiving holiday. Upon
Speaker John Boehner said his party should support gay Republican congressional candidates and urged his colleagues to “be a little more sensitive” when running against women. “Some of our members just aren’t as sensitive as they ought to be,” Boehner said. When asked if he thinks his party should support gay candidates, Boehner simply said: “I do.”
Amid an array of “knock-out” attacks against a number of Jews in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, a city councilwoman pointed to the success of the Jewish community as triggering the aggression. Councilwoman-elect Laurie Cumbo emphasized that while she “admire[s] the Jewish community immensely” for its work ethic, black teens may see it differently. “While I personally regard this level of tenacity, I also recognize that for others, the accomplishments of the Jewish community triggers feelings of resentment, and a sense that Jewish success is not also their success,” Cumbo, who was recently elected, wrote in a letter. Chief among the issues
Hardly a week goes by without Hillary Clinton receiving another award. Last month she was named a “Global Champion” by the International Medical Corps, received the American Patriot Award at the National Defense University Foundation and the Hermandad Award from the Mexican American Leadership Initiative. [Snip] At this rate, if a bunch of elderly left-wing Swedes toss her the Nobel Peace Prize early on, the way they did to Obama, it will barely rate mention among all the other glittering trophies that have been bestowed on a woman whose only actual accomplishment was being married to a crooked governor with
Last summer on his $100 million family tour of Africa, Barack Obama hoped for a priceless photo op with Nelson Mandela, the ailing freedom pioneer who went from prison cell to the presidency of South Africa. Mandela´s family suggested that wouldn’t happen. So, the Obamas did a photo op in Mandela´s former prison cell. Which Obama’s White House quickly tweeted upon word of the icon´s passing at 95. [Skip] But Obama was also caught staring at television coverage of Mandela’s passing, which became Obama’s Photo of the Day.
America is facing a wave of strikes by its fast-food workers on Thursday a day after Barack Obama warned that inequality in the USA had soared to the point that it now posed "a fundamental threat to the American dream". Low-paid workers in McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and other fast-food outlets in 100 cities across America were due to start rolling strikes to protest at the low level of America´s $7.25 (£4.45) federal minimum wage. The strikes are the latest part of a mushrooming publicity campaign for higher wages among those working so-called "McJobs", with fast-food restaurants seen as a
The world premiere of the “Ballad for Trayvon Martin for Orchestra and Jazz Quartet” is set for tonight. Princeton University’s director of its jazz-studies program composed the work in honor of the Florida teen. Anthony D. J. Branker told the Star-Ledger that the piece is intended to “be a form of healing” after Martin’s death and the controversial court case that followed it. The ballad, which will be performed by the university’s official orchestra and jazz ensemble, is intended to be a tribute to victims of racial violence, Branker explained. He hopes that the performance will be “one that speaks to
A new report from the Texas-based Quorum Report, published by longtime Texas journalist Harvey Kronberg, says that House Speaker John Boehner plans to push amnesty legislation through the House, after the primary filing deadline for candidates. The move would prevent Tea Party from challenging GOP lawmakers who support amnesty in 2014. Scott Braddock reported on Tuesday that “in recent weeks, various Texas business interests have told Quorum Report that Boehner has been telling them that he will start holding immigration votes not long after the filing deadline has passed.”
