Meet the softball: David
Gregory and Colin Powell

Washington Post, by Jennifer Rubin

Original Article

Posted By:SoCalGal, 1/14/2013 8:22:16 PM

“Meet the Press” isn’t what it used to be. After a remarkably softball interview with President Obama on New Year’s Day, moderator David Gregory on Sunday let former secretary of state Colin Powell filibuster through one question after another, never following up or, as they used to do in the good old days, confronting the interviewee with statements that directly contradict his spin.(Snip) Powell asserted that Chuck Hagel is “superbly qualified” to be defense secretary. Umm. You would think an interviewer would ask: But doesn’t he lack executive experience? Wouldn’t someone interested in

Comments:
Good piece by Rubin. There´s far more than just what is squeezed into the intro.

TAMPA, FL - Only three demonstrators showed up at a Justice for Trayvon Martin rally organized by the New Black Panther party near a Tampa courthouse Monday. The representatives with the New Black Panthers told us they scheduled a gathering in front of the George Edgecomb Courthouse on Twiggs Street to bring attention to the broken judicial system and to demand justice for Trayvon Martin. The activists said they felt the trial was about more than a neighborhood watch volunteer and an unarmed teenager. It was a tragic narrative on racial equality under the law, they mentioned.

Justice Department faces evidence hurdles

The Justice Department was running into immediate hurdles Monday in its investigation of possible civil rights violations by George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin -- namely, that after examining the case for more than a year, the evidence has not changed. Though the department announced after Zimmerman´s acquittal that it would consider a possible federal case, previously filed FBI documents show agents have not turned up any accounts that Zimmerman, before the February 2012 shooting, exhibited racial bias. Sanford police detective Chris Serino also told FBI agents last year that he considered Zimmerman

This week, instead of attacking a Hispanic senator, Marco Rubio, I will defend a Hispanic citizen, George Zimmerman, on trial for the murder of Trayvon Martin. (Zimmerman would make a better senator.)It’s becoming painfully obvious why no charges were brought against Zimmerman in this case — until Al Sharpton got involved. All the eyewitness accounts, testimony, ballistics and forensics keep backing up Zimmerman. We should send a big, fat bill for the whole thing to Sharpton, courtesy of MSNBC. With the prosecution’s witnesses making the defense’s case, the inquisitors’ last stand is to claim that, if the races were reversed,

This is another Syrian “who bombed it” mystery. What is not disputed is that a major Syrian arms depot in the town of Latakia in the Alawite region was destroyed (h/t Israel Matzav, also here). The Syrian rebels says Israel destroyed a large weapons depot which stored components of the Russian S300 air defense system, via Israel Hayom: "The Free Syrian Army claimed Monday that the Israel Air Force had destroyed a warehouse holding Russian S-300 anti-aircraft missiles east of the city of Homs in western Syria. Jacksonville medical examiner

The complaints swirling around Jacksonville’s chief medical examiner range from poor leadership to unusual practices, such as washing her feet in the autopsy sink and touching cadavers with her bare hands. Valerie Rao’s performance has come under heightened city scrutiny, leading the Mayor’s Office to request a state investigation in March. The state declined, so the city has continued exploring other solutions, including privatization of the Medical Examiner’s Office. Rao’s work in other cities has been criticized for at least a decade.

A prominent Democratic congressman who has been tapped to lead a major federal agency proposed tariff waivers worth millions for a textile company whose lobbying firm donated thousands to his campaign. The revelations could fuel criticism of a program that some say amounts to a back-door means to secure federal earmarks and encourages companies that use imported products to curry favor with key lawmakers. The political action committee of Baltimore-based lobbying firm Venable LLP made a pair of thousand-dollar contributions to the reelection campaign of Rep. Mel Watt (D., N.C.)

The truth about Benghazi, the Associated Press/James Rosen monitoring, the IRS corruption, the NSA octopus, and Fast and Furious is still not exactly known. Almost a year after the attacks on our Benghazi facilities, we are only now learning details of CIA gun-running, military stand-down orders, aliases of those involved who are still hard to locate, massaged talking points, and the weird jailing of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. We still do not quite know why Eric Holder’s Justice Department went after the Associated Press or Fox News’s James Rosen — given that members of the administration were themselves illegally leaking

WASHINGTON — U.S. officials insisted Tuesday that extraordinary security measures for nearly two dozen diplomatic posts were to thwart an “immediate, specific threat,” a claim questioned by counterterrorism experts, who note that the alert covers an incongruous set of nations from the Middle East to an island off the southern coast of Africa. Analysts don’t dispute the Obama administration’s narrative that it’s gleaned intelligence on a plot involving al Qaida’s most active affiliate, the Yemen-based Arabian Peninsula branch. That would explain why most U.S. posts in the Persian Gulf are on lockdown, including the U.

In an interview for The Guardian Weekend magazine, actor Matt Damon recently weighed in with his thoughts on how President Barack Obama has handled the scandals that have engulfed his administration since the spring. Damon, a vocal supporter of the president since his 2008 campaign for national office, said that Obama is overcompensating for his lack of military background with his tough response to controversies like how the government is responding to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. The actor said that Obama is allowing himself to “get bullied” and is acting as though is “manhood”

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who is in Cairo along with Sen.
