This is a beutiful example of arcane science becoming useful product. No-newtonian liquids resist change, but they do change. The deformation cannot occur quickly but if a force is added slowly the non newtonian liquid will deform to absorb the impact. If the force is too rapid, faster than the deformation then the material absorbs the impact like a solid.
Silly Putty is the perfect example, roll it, squish it stretch it its just a putty. But hit it with a hammer and it shatters like glass. Google silly putty shattering for scores of youtube videos of this. Its pretty neat.
This material is the same except it does not shatter thus offering protection .

Some samples exceeded the "provisional total tolerable intake" (PTTI) set by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by a factor of 120.
