| When police in Minority Report predicted who would commit crimes and stopped them before they did it, it was considered so futuristic, the film was set in 2054. Now, however, law enforcers in two American states are using crime-prediction software to predict which freed prisoners are most likely to commit murder, and supervising them accordingly. Instead of relying on parole officers to decide how much supervision inmates will need on the outside by looking at their records, the new system uses a computer algorithm to decide for them.

Some 15-16 years ago, I was astonished to discover that probation officers in Durham, NC, checked on their clients by driving up to the address then phoning and instructing the parolee to step outside the door so he/she could be seen. This, apparently, was enough information to show that the parolee was behaving.
I have no idea if this check method is still in use but it was for the subsequent eight years we lived in Durham.
Another thought--when I first began in the crime field, an FBI speaker said one thing that has stuck in my mind ever since: 90 percent of the crimes come from 10 percent of the addresses. I think we know it as "racial profiling" now. I wonder how those running the software will explain a racist computer?

Forgot to add that a Minority Report should be mandatory for every wannabe and current politician. Start with fraud, then go on to corruption as factors.

There are a number of particularly strong indicators of potential future criminals:
1) a record of voting Republican
2) a registered firearm or a concealed handgun license
3) a history of posting on conservative sites
4) .....

Amid a backdrop of record-low ratings for some broadcast shows, cable is feeling pretty good about its prospects in this year’s upfront advertising sales derby. For the season, ad-supported cable as a group has opened up a bigger ratings advantage over the Big Four – and has beaten the broadcasters in the 18-49 demo on a regular basis in a handful of timeslots. President Barack Obama´s bid to renew a ban against military-style assault weapons narrowly won the backing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday and headed to the full Senate, where it appears certain to fail. On a party line vote of 10-8, the Democratic-led panel approved a bill to renew a ban similar to one that expired in 2004. The measure would also limit high-capacity ammunition clips to 10 bullets.

This administration certainly loves drones, but even that ardent passion has limits. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Tuesday put a stop to production of a medal that was to be awarded to drone operators, and not a moment too soon. It wasn’t just the idea of the Distinguished Warfare Medal that offended good sense. The real outrage was ignited by the goofy idea to give it precedence over medals awarded for bravery and valor.

The pop hearthrob was initially treated by doctors backstage for up to 15 minutes before returning to finish the show. However, after the gig ended, he was taken to an undisclosed London hospital for a thorough medical examination. As Winter Storm Saturn heads farther east into the Atlantic Ocean, the rain and snow mixture in the Mid-Atlantic States will come to an end Wednesday night. The storm dumped up to 20 inches of snow in western Virginia on Wednesday. Temperatures were just barely mild enough to prevent any major accumulations in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. Mayor Bloomberg was booed yesterday as he walked in the annual St. Patrick’s Parade in the hurricane-ravaged Rockaways. The jeers grew so loud toward the end of the Queens parade that mayoral candidate and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn appeared to break away from the mayor to march separately. A spokesman for Quinn later said she always intended to walk separately from the mayor.

RUSH: Folks, I don´t know how else to categorize this. We are living in a dying country. I don´t know how else to categorize what´s happening -- 88,000 new jobs. The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce. Ninety million. People not in the labor force grew by 663,000, and now 90 million. That´s the labor force participation rate. This is 1979 levels.
