‘Shock and anger’ as New York

The Gray Lady’s readers are seeing red over a decision to shut down the paper’s green desk. The New York Times plans to shutter its standalone environment “pod” -- a pool of editors and reporters dedicated to green issues and the climate -- and redistribute them to other teams. The paper’s top editors claim the move won’t affect the paper of record’s efforts to cover the climate, however. (Snip)Margaret Sullivan, the Times´ public editor, expressed dismay at the news. As a nice gesture (symbolic of course) the paper can commit to reinstate the "environment desk" when/if the earth starts warming again.
In the meantime their unemployment checks will help boost the Pelosi/Reid economy.

#1, I called Hugh Manatee for an environmental comment...
His response was unprintable (remember, only "All the news that´s fit to print")...
but sounded like something that could...
shall we say... darken the waters.

#4, I think the article says all the employees were reassigned, not let go.
Nice try, though...

Editors and reporters who preached that climate change was the biggest threat facing Americans find out that unemployment is a bigger one. Maybe Al Gorezeera will hire them.

RIYADH - Russian President Vladimir Putin called U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday to discuss a U.S. diplomatic proposal for Ukraine, the White House said, adding that Obama told him that Russia must pull back its troops and not move deeper into Ukraine. It was believed to have been the first direct conversation between Obama and Putin since the United States and its European allies began imposing sanctions on Putin´s inner circle and threatened to penalize key sectors of Russia´s economy. Russia´s reinforcement of troops near Ukraine has brought the total forces there to as many as 40,000, U.S. officials estimated on

Charles Krauthammer said Thursday on “Special Report with Bret Baier” that people can either believe President Obama’s version of what happened at his meeting with Pope Francis, or they can choose a different option offered by the Vatican. While President Obama said he avoided discussing “social schisms” during his meeting with Pope Francis, the Vatican’s official readout said discussion turned to “the exercise of the rights to religious freedom, life and conscientious objection, as well as the issue of immigration reform.” “On the one hand, you’ve got the bishop of Rome, the Holy See, of whom a billion co-religionists believe

VATICAN CITY – President Barack Obama and the Vatican gave distinctly different accounts of the president´s audience with Pope Francis on Thursday, with Obama stressing their common ground on poverty and inequality but Vatican officials emphasizing concerns over Obama´s health care law, which mandates contraception coverage. Obama described himself as "incredibly moved" by his nearly hour-long session with the popular pontiff. He said the two spent the most time discussing the plight of the poor and the marginalized as well as regions of conflict and the elusive nature of peace around the world. President Obama´s first salary as a community organizer was paid by a Catholic group and his earliest social justice work was rooted in Catholic social doctrine. He identified with Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, then Chicago´s archbishop, whose consistent ethic of life encompassed a dedication to the poor, a concern over the human costs of war, and opposition to the death penalty. You could imagine that at his meeting with Pope Francis on Thursday, the president was tempted to ask: Why can´t these American bishops get along with me? Or, perhaps more humbly: Holy Father, what can I do to make these

Clusters of disorganized brain cells were discovered in tissue samples from brain regions important for regulating social functioning, emotions and communication - which can all be troublesome for children with autism.(Snip)The authors said the clusters, detected with sophisticated lab tests, are likely defects that occurred during the second or third trimesters of pregnancy. A long-running child custody case took a dramatic turn Tuesday, when a Massachusetts juvenile court judge awarded permanent custody of teenager Justina Pelletier to the state Department of Children and Families. The ruling by Judge Joseph Johnston means the 15-year-old will probably stay in state custody until her 18th birthday unless her parents can prove they are fit to care for their child. The judge’s four-page decision, which was provided to the Globe, was remarkable for its detail and forcefulness. Johnston faulted Connecticut’s child protection agency for its failure to get involved in a case involving a child from its state, and

As part of its plan to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, the Obama administration is targeting the dairy industry to reduce methane emissions in their operations. This comes despite falling methane emission levels across the economy since 1990. The White House has proposed cutting methane emissions from the dairy industry by 25 percent by 2020. Although U.S. agriculture only accounts for about 9 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, it makes up a sizeable portion of methane emissions — which is a very potent greenhouse gas. When Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Pope Francis a little more than a year ago, the first thing that struck those who knew him well was his unexpected, beatific smile. “In Argentina, he didn’t smile like that,” Sergio Rubin, the pope’s biographer, said this week at a conference sponsored by the Ethics and Public Policy Center. “That was the big surprise.” Since then, the pope has mostly kept on smiling — in homilies, in audiences, in meetings with the homeless and the poor.
