Joy Behar Does Sharia

You have to love it. Joy Behar now works for an employer whose Al Jazeera network, in the words of Current TV co-founders Al Gore and Joel Hyatt, “was founded with the same goals we had for Current.” The co-star of Barbara Walters’ famous morning chat show The View, along with her Current colleague Jennifer Granholm, the former liberal Governor of Michigan, are now two of the main pillars of the Al-Jazeera line up. Media Matters? Headed by the famously “Hey, I’m gay” David Brock? They have been linked with Al-Jazeera, the television home

CPAC 2014: The final scorecard

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Rand Paul romped, Ted Cruz flopped. Chris Christie made nice with the right and Marco Rubio learned that talking up foreign interventionism is about the last way to win over the crowd. So went CPAC 2014. Paul showed again that the conference – filled with young, libertarian leaning Republicans – is his home field and then some. The Kentucky senator won the conference straw poll with 31 percent, nearly tripling the vote count for Cruz, the second place finisher. Rubio finished seventh, after almost beating Paul in the CPAC straw poll a year ago. Take the results for

Count me as one who was not suprised at the size of Rand Paul’s victory in the CPAC straw poll. I’m only surprised it wasn’t bigger — even though he nearly tripled the votes of his nearest rival Ted Cruz. You could almost say that Paul is the ONLY interesting candidate on the immediate horizon — Republican or Democrat. I’m not going to badmouth the Republicans (I may have to vote for them), but Hillary is as dull, predictable and reactionary as Obama, if that’s possible. Neither of them has evidenced an ounce of creativity, or even an original thought, while

What should President Obama do to de-fang tyrant Vladimir Putin? He could start with two simple announcements tomorrow morning, as the beginning of a campaign to finally show Moscow that Washington means business. First, the president should announce a release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. That shouldn’t be so hard to swallow for a White House that sent 30 million barrels onto the market from the reserve in the summer of 2011 for no strategic reason other than to reverse plunging poll numbers as gas prices neared $4 dollars a gallon. Second, Obama should use this opportunity to finally approve construction of

Many law firms have failed over the years, but none as spectacularly as Dewey & LeBoeuf, the namesake “global super firm” of the former Republican Presidential nominee Thomas E. Dewey. As I noted in my account of the firm’s collapse in the magazine, an unknown number of partners took their complaints about the firm’s leadership to the Manhattan District Attorney, and last fall a grand jury began hearing evidence of potential fraud. On Thursday, Cyrus Vance, Jr., the Manhattan D.A., unveiled lengthy indictments charging Steven Davis, the firm’s former chairman; Stephen DiCarmine, its executive director; and Joel Sanders, its chief financial

The normal international soap opera has been interrupted by the unexpected drama of MH370 — the disappearance of a Malaysian airliner traveling from Malaysia to Beijing. It has all the elements of a blockbuster movie. Take an aircraft type that’s never had a major loss of life due to equipment failure — the Boeing 777 — add its disappearance from the secondary search radar system (used by air traffic controllers), stir in reports that the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) was broadcasting nothing odd and then stopped, mix in two mysterious passengers using stolen passports, lace with a

Most people know SEAL Team 6 killed Osama bin Laden, but few know what happened afterwards, and why. On Aug. 6 2011, members of SEAL Team 6 engaged in another covert raid in Afghanistan. As they approached the drop zone, Taliban forces attacked using rocket propelled grenades. The CH-47 carrying the SEALS with the call-sign “Extortion 17? was was hit by one of the rockets tearing off ten and a half feet of one of its main rotor blades. Extortion 17 crashed, killing 30 Americans and eight Afghans. It is the single largest one day loss of life in the history

Interpol says no country checked its database for information about stolen passports that were used to board the Malaysia Airlines flight that disappeared with 239 people on board Saturday less than an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, bound for Beijing. In a sharply worded criticism of shortcomings of national passport controls, the Lyon, France-based international police body said information about the thefts of an Austrian passport in 2012 and an Italian passport last year was entered into its database after they were stolen in Thailand. Interpol said in a statement it was investigating all other passports used to board

Officials have so far provided no details including when the prime minister will arrive or how long he will stay. Russian troops began taking control of facilities in the region about a week ago, amid the political uprising in Ukraine in which residents have ousted President Viktor Yanukovych. President Obama has spoken by phone twice with Russia President Vladimir Putin asking him not to escalate the situation into a military battle

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia -- Two people who traveled on the missing Malaysia Airlines flight under the passports of an Italian and an Austrian citizen appear to have bought their tickets together. The tickets were bought from China Southern Airlines in Thai baht at identical prices, according to China´s official e-ticket verification system Travelsky. The ticket numbers are contiguous, which indicates the tickets were issued together. The new information adds to the mystery that has enveloped the fate of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, the passenger jet that disappeared over Southeast Asia early Saturday on its way to Beijing. “I told you so.” Those have to be four of the most satisfying words in the English language. And Mitt Romney has earned the right to speak that short sentence, over and over again, whenever he chooses. Not that he would — it would be “unbecoming,” to use one of Romney’s old-fashioned words that in 2002 had the mandarins of Political Correctness harrumphing about his “sexism,” I believe the charge was that time. But these days, Mitt looks more and more prescient, and his critics ever more deluded. First of all, Russia has become “our number one geopolitical foe,” as he put it

From his weekend vacation spot in the Florida keys, President Obama called several European leaders Saturday about the crisis in Ukraine, even as Russia beefed up its military occupation of the contested Crimea region. Mr. Obama, ensconced in an exclusive resort in Key Largo, spoke individually by phone with British Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Francois Hollande and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. The leaders “reiterated their grave concern over Russia’s clear violation of international law and reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the White House said.

Tulare, Calif. When Americans think of California, they tend to think of Silicon Valley, Hollywood and the golden coast—"a place where the grass is really greener, warm, wet and wild" as Santa Barbara native Katy Perry swoons in "California Gurls." Or they think of the liberals and environmentalists who dominate state government. Yet there´s another California, set back from the left coast, in the abundantly fertile Central Valley, which produces half of America´s fruits and vegetables; more than 98% of its almonds, pistachios and walnuts; a third of U.S. dairy exports—and Trader Joe´s Two Buck Chuck wine. One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey

Barack Obama´s parents were "married in name only," according to David Maraniss´s 2012 Barack Obama: The Story. But since definitions of an "in name only" marriage vary, such as "a marriage of convenience" or "a sexless marriage," and Maraniss failed to explain his claim, it is unclear what he was implying. Therefore, Obama´s oft-told nativity story must be searched for the full implications of Obama´s parents´ "in name only" marriage. The most dangerous parts of a flight are takeoff and landing. Rarely do incidents happen when a plane is cruising seven miles above the earth. So the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jet well into its flight Saturday morning over the South China Sea has led aviation experts to assume that whatever happened was quick and left the pilots no time to place a distress call. Hi, everybody. This week, I traveled to New England, where I was joined by four governors who are working to raise the minimum wage in each of their states. And they’ve also joined me in calling on Congress to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour. Because it would give nearly 800,000 Americans in their states a raise — and lift wages for about 28 million across the country. So these governors aren’t waiting for Congress to make up its mind. And in my State of the Union Address, I asked America’s business leaders to go ahead and do what they could to raise their employees’ wages, too.
