Shell may have moved troubled
Alaskan rig to avoid $6 million
tax, congressman says

Fox News, by Edmund DeMarche

Royal Dutch Shell may have moved an oil rig that ran aground last month in order to avoid $6 million in taxes to Alaska, Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., charged in a letter to the oil behemoth´s president. (Snip) The oil drill, which had no engines of its own, was being towed for maintenance when it ran aground on a remote Alaska island during a powerful storm on New Year´s Eve. It was carrying more than 140,000 gallons of diesel and about 12,000 gallons of lube oil and hydraulic fluid. The oil drill was eventually freed from the rocks and moved to a nearby harbor. Alaska's 2 percent drilling equipment tax is levied

Comments:
[Associated Press].

Markey, D-Mass., should mind his own state´s business when it comes to oil exploration. It is clear that an accident occurred, with no human or environmental toll because of weather. It was remedied and the rig reached its destination. Shell, in my thinking, should not be responsible for a "non-event."

So what? If I were a Shell investor, I would be glad to have them save the $6 million. It didn´t turn out so well this time, but who cares what motivated the move?

Any company that DOESN´T think $6million in additional taxation isn´t an issue worthy of some action to alleviate should look for new leadership..as should any Country.

UNICEF’s new campaign, “Poo2Loo,” targets India’s public defecation problem with a series of music videos, pranks and advertisements featuring a giant feces mascot. According to the campaign, 620 million Indians are defecating in public every day. “That’s half the population dumping over 65 million kilos of poo out there every day. If this poo continues to be let loose on us, there will be no escaping the stench of life threatening infections, diseases and epidemics,” the Poo2Loo website says, while asking visitors to sign a pledge to ending public defecation. Former White House press secretary Dee Dee Myers has been named head of Warner Bros. corporate communications, replacing longtime studio executive Sue Fleishman. Myers, who served as White House press secretary during President Clinton´s first term, will begin work at Burbank-based Warner Bros. on Sept. 2. Fleishman, who had worked at Warner Bros. for nine years, stepped down from her post this week. She oversaw communications for Warner Bros. during a two-year corporate succession race that ended in January 2013 with the announcement that Kevin Tsujihara would succeed Barry Meyer as chief executive and

Robert Rizzo, the city administrator who oversaw an era of corruption and graft in one of Los Angeles County’s poorest cities, was sentenced Wednesday to 12 years in state prison. Rizzo stared straight ahead, his palms pressed against the defense table as the sentence was read. “Mr. Rizzo, you did some very, very bad things for a very long time,” Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy told the former Bell city administrator. The judge said Rizzo transformed himself into a “godfather of sorts” in Bell, an all-powerful ruler who plundered the city’s treasury to pay lavish salaries and dole out loans to fellow employees.

Iran´s parliament is seeking a ban on vasectomies and a tightening of abortion rules as the country moves away from its progressive laws on family planning in an attempt to increase the birthrate. Two decades after Iran initiated an effective birth control programme, including subsidised male sterilisation surgeries and free condom distribution, the country is to make a U-turn. Last year the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, criticised existing policy on contraception, describing it as an imitation of western lifestyle. The 74-year-old has urged the government to tackle what he believes to be an ageing population and to double the

Climate change’s latest casualty appears to be fish — or more specifically, fish brains — as researchers say the carbon dioxide that’s being absorbed into the ocean is causing the scaly creatures to lose their survival instincts. In other words, the fish are losing their minds, The Daily Mail reported. The acid from atmospheric carbon dioxide seeps into sea waters, dissolves and ultimately lowers the pH balance, researchers said. The acidic waters then hamper the fishes’ sensory systems, so they’re not able to distinguish between smells any longer, the scientists went on. When the acid levels get really high, the fish lose their

It’s always a hassle getting called for jury duty. This is something all of us can agree on. Now, there’s a dog out there who can also agree on this, because she too got called in to fulfill her civic duty. Yes, really. Last week, New Jersey’s Cumberland County sent a jury summons to resident IV Griner. But IV Griner is not a person. She’s a German Shepherd. Her owner, Barrett Griner, tells CBS Philly that he figured out the mishap quickly, but it was still pretty funny. His full name is Barrett Griner IV, so a computer likely mistook the roman numerals for his first name before the summons was mailed out.

Pretoria, South Africa — The judge in the trial of Oscar Pistorius, the disabled track star accused of murdering his girlfriend, said on Wednesday that proceedings would be postponed after hearings end on Thursday, until May 5, two days before South Africa’s national election. The prosecution had sought the postponement on Tuesday to avoid scheduling conflicts with other cases. The Pistorius trial has already run far beyond the three weeks scheduled when it opened in early March, and has generated 2,000 pages of detailed testimony, Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa said. In a statement, the Justice Ministry said it had moved 2,400 prisoners to other high-security prisons in central and northern Iraq, adding that Abu Ghraib’s location — west of central Baghdad and on the edge of insurgent-controlled areas of Anbar Province — had become a “hot zone.” It was not clear whether the closing was permanent, or if the prison might reopen

Newly released internal GM documents reveal that the company in 2001 considered -- and rejected – an ignition switch design that two prominent safety advocates say could have avoided the problem that led the automaker to recall millions of vehicles this year. The company’s decision to reject the safer switch was motivated by cost, the advocates say. They say GM documents show that design was the same one GM quietly began providing years later, in 2006, as a replacement part, and is now beginning to add to all recalled vehicles. The Bureau of Land Management has been charging him grazing fees since the early 1990s, which he has refused to pay. Further, BLM has issued orders limiting the area on which Bundy’s cows can

Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)

Toddlers show racial bias when picking playmates, a study reveals. They also take account of how fairly others behave. Researchers tested the reaction of white 15-month-olds as toys were distributed. Two white adults divided the toys, one equally and the other unequally. Seventy per cent of the toddlers chose to play with the researcher who distributed the toys fairly. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. And the babies are more likely to help those who share the same ethnicity, which is known as

Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects. For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development. People love that Scottish brogue so much, they don’t mind that he has it when he plays Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, an immortal Spaniard in Highlander.
