Government Consumer Watch
Dog Inks New Mortgage Rules

US News & World Report, by Meg Handley

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 1/10/2013 12:45:54 PM

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau unveiled new mortgage lending rules Thursday, designed to protect borrowers from the worst of the risky banking practices that ultimately led to the 2008 housing bust. The new Ability-to-Pay rules require lenders to ensure that would-be borrowers can afford the mortgage debt they take on by verifying important financial information such as employment and debt obligations, and the rules bar lenders from basing ability to repay on low teaser rates. "The core of the Ability-to-Repay rule rests on two basic, common-sense precepts: Lenders have to check

Comments:
Once again, more obfuscation by the Feds, rather than begin with closing down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac immediately. And, what about existing loans?

I was surprised recently when my older brother mentioned that my "inheritance" [tied with future sale of paid off home] was being mortgaged possibly to pay for my ailing Mother´s health. At 88, it´s highly unlikely that she will ever pay back the loan, while principal goes toward her health care. I expect that this is not an "isolated" case.

Typical gubmint waste of money after the horse is out of the barn. Just who is offering ´teaser´ rates on a mortgage, now?If so, this has always been against the law.
Have you tried to get buy a house , recently? Be ready for a financial version of a colostomy.
The next thing you know, they´ll be asking if you are a U S Citizen.

An elderly person who owes nothing on a house would be an excellent risk for a mortgage loan. You only have an inheritance after someone dies. If an elderly person needs care, they can and should use the equity in their home to finance their own care. I guess an elderly person could eat cat food and go into a cheap nursing home to preserve their children´s expectation of a payout. The mortgage crisis was not caused by the greatest generation failing to pay their bills. It was caused by people who have bad credit but were giving loans anyways.

Wonder if they are gonna ban reality-TV shows like "Flip this House", where folks get the idea that they can make a killing by buy a house with a huge mortgage, then sell it at a quick profit (if the price goes up)

Cable TV was full of those shows just 6 years ago. Most everybody got burned.

I predict that these "new" rules will affect protected minority groups more than non-protected groups and hence will be quietly modified to allow lower standards for these groups. Kind of like last time!

First the leftists threatened the banks with charges of ´red-lining´ because they declined loans to those who could not be expected to re-pay.

Then they accused them of ´predatory loans´ because they did what they were forced to do and made loans to said people.

Now they want to punish someone for something but they are not sure what.

The free market was doing just fine until these Marxists took over.

Reply 6 - Posted by: Charactercounts, 1/10/2013 3:13:19 PM     (No. 9109426)

The same feds who told banks they must lend to insolvent buyers, and threatened to penalize them if they didn´t, then attacked the banks when they did lend and the loans went bad, then bailed out people who defaulted on their mortgages, are now telling the banks to make sure people can pay the mortgages they take out?

Reply 7 - Posted by: nonsense, 1/10/2013 3:14:25 PM     (No. 9109428)

The Reckless Endangerment caused by the corrupt Demonrat party and their Community Reinvestment Act, now trying to "mend" things with new legislation. The party of death, in this case the economy, strikes again.

Reply 8 - Posted by: JimJr, 1/10/2013 3:15:01 PM     (No. 9109430)

Fun, fun , fun. The banks are just going to get out of the mortgage lending business altogether. The new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau rules state that lenders must check the applicant´s "Ability-to-Repay", while the Community Reinvestment Act requires lenders to make loans to a certain percentage of "disadvantaged" borrowers or else have their business curtailed. Classic FedGov Catch-22. Unintended consequence (or not?): Home mortgage lending dries up.

Welcome to the 21st century President Clinton! The chief executive who guided America on to the Information Superhighway revealed he didn’t have a Twitter page — until comedian Stephen Colbert got a handle on this low-tech travesty. Amazingly, Clinton said he was too shy and insecure to start his own Twitter page. (Snip) A laughing and mildly embarrassed Clinton took the bait, and dictated his first tweet under the @PrezBillyJeff handle. “Just spent amazing time with Colbert! Is he sane? He is cool! #cgiu” Colbert told the president: “Sir welcome to the future.”

San Francisco & New York - Google Inc said on Tuesday it plans to bring its ultra high-speed Internet and television service to Austin, Texas, next year, prompting AT&T Inc to reveal its own plans to follow suit - if it gets the same terms from local authorities. AT&T appeared to be making a political point to highlight the heavy regulations that encumber traditional phone companies, analysts said. Google promised to begin connecting homes in Austin by the middle of 2014 with a 1-gigabit-per-second Internet service, roughly 13 times faster than the speediest service AT&T had

Bahrain on Tuesday became the first Arab country to blacklist Hizbullah as a terrorist organization, the Al Arabiya network reports. The move came a week after the Bahraini parliament voted to label the group a terrorist organization. Its alleged backing and training of radical Shiite groups against Bahrain was the main reason given for the decision, the report said. The Bahraini cabinet has tasked the interior and foreign ministries with implementing the decision. “The measure is to protect Bahrain’s security and stability from Hezbollah’s threats,” Bahraini MP Adil al-Asoumi told Al Arabiya.

"Travel agencies are not allowed to take tourist groups to go there, since the North Korean government is now asking foreign people to leave," the official at the Dandong Border Office said. "As far as I know, business people can enter and leave North Korea freely," added the official, who declined to give his name, without making clear which country had ordered the move.

Wyoming Republican Sen. Mike Enzi may be gearing up to run for re-election in 2014, but that doesn’t mean Liz Cheney is ruling out a run for the Senate seat now. A source close to the politically active daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney tells The Daily Caller that she is still seriously considering running. Over the weekend, The Casper Star Tribune reported that Enzi told a meeting of the GOP state party committee that he is looking forward to running for re-election — something he has yet to formally announce. An Enzi spokesman confirmed the senator’s remarks.

"They" would be cicadas, the big, noisy bugs that climb out of the earth about every decade and a half to make everyone´s life more exciting. Experts tell Gannett News Service that the bugs live underground and feed off fluid that gathers near the roots of plants, then emerge from the soil when its temperature reaches 64 degrees. They´re largely harmless, but their sheer numbers can cause headaches. Some areas could see as many as a billion of the cicadas per square mile. That can lead to a lot of dead bugs all over roadways

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. "The politics has been relentless and that continues," Sebelius said. "There was some hope that once the Supreme Court ruled in July, and then once an election occurred there would be a sense that, ´This is the law of the land, let´s get on board, let´s make this work.´"
