| Individuals seeking a permit to buy firearms in New Jersey would have to submit results of a psychological evaluation before they could buy a gun, under a bill introduced yesterday in the Legislature by West New York Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez. The measure would also require applicants to have an on-site inspection and evaluation of the household where the firearm would be located. The bill was one of 18 introduced yesterday by several lawmakers in the state Senate and Assembly intended to curb gun violence in New Jersey, which already has some of the nation’s toughest gun laws.

There should be psychological tests for persons who serve in the state government, at ALL levels, in both New Jersey and New York.
New Jersey Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg and Assemblyman Joseph Cryan would not meet the pre-screening criteria. Angelica Jimenez would not finish the first round.
In New York, Cuomo and Bloomberg would also be knocked out in the first round.
But Chris Christie would get a little further along. If only because he has the wit to hold his tongue on those issues with which he may not be in full agreement with.

I can´t stand half-measures.
Why not a bill ordering SWAT teams to surround the homes of anyone attempting to buy a gun legally? Demand they surrender all weapons and come out, hands up, within 10 minutes of the order by the on-scene SWAT commander? Who can then issue shoot-to-kill orders to defend the team from "suspicious movements, objects, and bulges under clothing"?

Empty, feel-good, nonsense laws like this eat up huge resources of time in pointless activity. As a Realtor in California I am required to write an "ethics" exam at every renewal of my license. The ability to pass this stupid thing has NO relevance to whether you are a person of character. A bunch of dumb questions that boil down to "Is it OK to cheat people if you have the chance?" (Hint: The answer is "no".)

Nashville, Tenn. - A proposal that would dock the welfare payments of parents whose children fail school is dead. After about a 40-minute debate on the Senate floor Thursday, Republican Senator Sponsor Stacey Campfield decided to pull the bill so it can be studied over the summer. Both Republicans and Democrats expressed concern about the legislation, which sought to cut Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits by 30 percent if a child fails to advance to the next grade. The money could be earned back if a parent attends two conferences with teachers, takes parenting classes or enrolls the child in

New Jersey districts spent an average of $18,047 per pupil in 2011-12, up 4 percent from the year before, the state said Wednesday. That figure comes from the third annual “Taxpayer’s Guide to Education Spending,” which uses a method devised by the Christie administration to give residents a full picture of the price tag for schools from pre-kindergarten through Grade 12. (Snip) Among regular Bergen districts, total per-pupil spending ranged from a high of $25,938 in the small, wealthy and high-achieving district of Alpine to $13,317 in the immigrant, blue-collar community of Fairview. A federal injunction seeks to shut down Memphis-based Mo’ Money Taxes. The government contends tax losses from fraudulent tax returns prepared by the firm in 2011 cost the IRS more than $9 million. The U.S. Justice Department has long had an eye on Mo’ Money and the tax preparation business. The focus intensified last year after hundreds of Mo’ Money clients in several states alleged bounced checks, excessive fees and the failure of the business to pass along IRS refunds. New York — Cookie Monster stands accused of shoving a 2-year-old. Super Mario was charged with groping a woman. And Elmo was booked for berating tourists with anti-Semitic slurs. Times Square is crawling with entrepreneurs who dress up as pop-culture characters and try to make a few bucks posing for photos with visitors to the big city. But some of these characters are unlike anything you´ve seen on "Sesame Street" or at Disney World. They smoke, they use foul language, and they can be aggressive. At least three of them have been arrested in the past seven months.

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan has gained a reputation for citing crime statistics that don’t always add up or making statements to the press she later says were taken out of context. It’s happened again. In an interview with KCBS radio broadcast on Monday, Oakland’s mayor said the following: For the last 2 months, violence in Oakland has been way down. It seems to come in these spurts. So like for six weeks there had been no murders east of High Street in East Oakland. Problem is, there have been seven homicides east of High Street over the past six weeks,

The Navy’s cancellation of Blue Angels 2013 air shows extends past the federal fiscal year ending in September means the November 1-2 Homecoming Show at Pensacola Naval Air Station has been scrapped too. “It’s not just the fiscal year,” said Navy Lt. Aaron Kakiel, spokesman for the Naval Air Forces Command in San Diego. Thus the Navy is also canceling the Blues four air shows in October. More importantly for the November 2013 season finale in Pensacola, their practices in October are canceled too. New York — As many doctors struggle to keep their practices financially sound, some are buckling under money woes and being pushed into bankruptcy. It´s a trend that´s accelerated in recent years, industry experts say, with potentially serious consequences for doctors and patients. Some physicians are still able to keep practicing after bankruptcy, but for others, it´s a career-ending event. And when a practice shuts its doors, patients can find it harder to get the health care they need nearby. Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings by physician practices have spiked recently, noted Bobby Guy, co-chair of the American Bankruptcy Institute´s

The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999.
