The Muddle Class
Wall Street Journal, by James Taranto

Original Article

Posted By:earlybird, 1/8/2013 8:27:01 PM

Lots of commentators are piling on Massachusetts´ soon-to-be-senior senator, Elizabeth Warren, for her inability to define "middle class." We´d like to defend her on that point, then pile on her for something else. National Review´s Patrick Brennan has a nice summary of the Warren interview in question, in which she and a reporter from Boston´s WFXT-TV have the following exchange: Reporter: When you mention "middle class," what numbers are we talking about, in terms of income level? Warren: It´s not a numbers issue. I know you would expect a very wonky answer for me, you know, about the percentiles.

Comments:
And she´s going to be with us for a while. She and others like her. Argh.

We thought "lawyers" were bad in government. How about "professors"?

She was smart enough to manufacture an Indian heritage (despite her un-Indian looks) to get ahead in the liberal bastions and smart enough to know that the Democrats wouldn´t hold it - or anything else - against her.

As a demonrat, Warren really defines the middle class at whatever point demonrats decide they have to raise taxes on the rich. You know, those millionaires and billionaires who Barry defined as anyone making over $250,000.

Could a peanut-heavy diet for pregnant women help keep their children from suffering dangerous nut allergies? Researchers are investigating the possibility in a new study. Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Pediatrics, the study found that when pregnant women ate more peanuts and tree nuts they tended to have children with fewer nut allergies. Peanut allergies in children have gone up from 0.4 percent in 1997 to 1.4 percent in 2010, according to the study. Researchers examined more than 8,000 children and their mothers to understand how diet during pregnancy might affect allergies in children.

The suits at A&E are realizing the fix to their “Duck Dynasty” scandal is going to require more than extension cords and duct tape. Regulators on Tuesday approved a temporary price hike of 3 cents for a first-class stamp, bringing the charge to 49 cents a letter in an effort to help the Postal Service recover from severe mail decreases brought on after the 2008 economic downturn. The big break in the case came Wednesday. That’s when a green Chevrolet Suburban, caught on surveillance video menacingly circling the parking areas of the Mall at Short Hills, was discovered abandoned in South Orange, according to two law enforcement sources. The large sports utility vehicle, they would later find out, belonged to the mother of one of the suspects in the fatal carjacking last Sunday of 30-year-old Dustin Friedland, who was shot and left for dead on the concrete floor of a mall parking deck as the Hoboken lawyer and his wife were returning to their car after an

President Barack Obama´s healthcare law could have a "meltdown" and make it difficult for his Democratic Party to keep control of the U.S. Senate next year if ongoing problems with the program are not resolved, a Democratic senator said on Sunday. Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who has urged delaying a penalty for people who do not enroll for health insurance in 2014 under the law, told CNN that a transitional year was needed for the complex healthcare program, commonly known as Obamacare, to work. The mystery of why RSA would use a flawed, NSA-championed algorithm as the default random number generator for several of its encryption products appears to be solved, and the answer is utterly banal, if true: the NSA paid it to. In an effort to ease President Obama’s reelection bid, the White House delayed the imposition of a series of regulations affecting Obamacare and environmental protection ahead of the 2012 election, according to a new report in the Washington Post. While the administration has said its approach to regulatory review is consistent with that of previous administrations, several former administration officials told the Post that the delays were longer under Mr. Obama than his predecessors, and that the motive behind them was clearly political. The regulations in question governed some of the most politically sensitive aspects of the president’s agenda. One determined which

At the heart of the Duck Dynasty controversy is a modern paradox: those who most loudly celebrate the gay lifestyle seem to go into a Victorian swoon whenever anyone even obliquely mentions actual gay sex practices such as anal sex. Image control has been crucial to gay activists. In 1980 Hollywood produced, Cruising, a big budget film that showed the seamier side of gay life. It got pretty good reviews because it

In its rush to pass a budget deal, Congress voted to slice the benefits of veterans, even those who retire after suffering injuries while serving their country. This unconscionable sneak attack on former members of the armed services was evidently inserted into the legislation by GOP House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan during talks with lead Democratic negotiator, Sen. Patty Murray. He ought to be ashamed. The provision would cut veterans’ cost of living adjustments beginning in 2015 by $600 million a year — less than one-tenth of 1% of the $630 billion Pentagon budget. But the pain would be real. What a depressing presidency Barack Obama has wrought. Waltzing into office five years ago with the media’s shameless aid on a high-school-style campaign pledge of “Hope and Change,” the former community organizer from Chicago spent his last press conference of the year apologizing for everything he’s done wrong — then announcing he’s “eager to skip town” to Hawaii for “a couple days of sleep and sun.” Well, 17, but who’s counting. One truly has to wonder how the vaunted White House staff of advisers and sycophants came up with the battle plan for Friday’s presser, the last of a terrible year:

The Bipartisan Budget Act that Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and I drafted will soon become law. We think it´s a small step toward fiscal discipline in Washington. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill will reduce the deficit over the next ten years by over $20 billion. And unlike current law, it will provide much-needed relief to our already strained defense budget. One part of the bill has become particularly controversial: the reduction in cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for working-age military retirees. It´s easy to forget that the tea party movement is still less than 5 years old. Its successes include the 2010 midterm elections, when it helped the GOP win back the U.S. House. It was once again a noisy and resurgent player in American politics in 2013. But that doesn´t mean it was a year of victories: The movement´s campaign to repeal Obamacare failed, and public approval hit near-record lows after the tea party forced a partial government shutdown. Even tea party events aren´t as large as they once were. Even so, the movement had a great influence on both the debate and on the direction of the Republican Party this year.

House Budget Committee chairman Rep. President Obama’s health reform law limps past its biggest milestone in critical condition. Monday was supposed to be the deadline to sign up for Obamacare insurance that would start on Jan. 1. Obama then granted a signup extension to midnight Tuesday — the latest in a series of desperate, short-term fixes. And with enrollment way short of projections, the President’s promise of near-universal coverage recedes into a doubtful future. According to the White House’s no-doubt optimistic count, the first half of December saw an enrollment surge of 1 million, on top of the 1.2 million in October and November.
