It´s OK. Donna Laframboise hasn´t been involved in some terrible scandal in which she has been caught hiding declines or faking evidence or breaching FOI requests or anything. That´s the other side´s speciality, not ours. But I thought she deserved a gate named after her, nonetheless, for her latest scoop: leaking the IPCC´s Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) on to the internet--in time for honest blogging folk to unpick it before it gets spun by the usual alarmist suspects.[Snip]It was her excellent The Delinquent Teenager Who Was Mistaken For The World´s Top Climate Expert, of course, which did more than anything

How come we don´t have our own James Dellingpole?

Is it possible to manufacture one? Or should we just make the Brits an offer they can´t refuse?

Donna´s book ´Delinquent Teenager...´ is a must read. It is journalism as it should be. There is not a media organization that comes close to her skill, though some at FNC are trying mightily.

An odd dark vertical line that was observed in the sky over Florida earlier this week has left meteorologists puzzled. The shadowy apparition was spotted and photographed by Mike Weight at Honeymoon Island State Park near Dunedin, Florida, Wednesday. Weight was walking on the beach at around 12.30pm. The day was bright and sunny, but there were thunderheads forming to the east. ‘I was looking North when I observed what looked like a ray of dark light coming down from a small cloud to the surface of the Gulf about a half-mile away,’ the 73-year-old man wrote in an email

Letting off steam: Yellowstone´s Steamboat

Yellowstone National Park´s Steamboat Geyser went off for the first time in eight years on Wednesday evening, drenching delighted visitors with its unexpected display. The eruption went on for nine minutes from 7:30pm and blasted water and steam up to 300 feet in the air. The geyser continued to emit plumes of steam high into the sky throughout the night. Steamboat is the most fickle of the Wyoming park´s roughly 500 geysers, and no one knows when it´s going to erupt next. The park´s most famous geyser, Old Faithful, is the antithesis of Steamboat, which is at once the

A member of the US Senate was caught this week trying to make a rather conspicuous edit to Edward Snowden´s Wikipedia page . In a move sure to grind the gears of conspiracy theorists everywhere, a member of the US Senate recently edited Snowden’s Wikipedia page from describing him as a ‘dissident’ to a traitor, according to the entry’s changelog. The user’s IP address was quickly traced back to the US Senate. It is not clear if the person is an active Senator, a staffer or an intern, but the change certainly came from the Senate.

President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner approved the deal, which will give Argentina the capability to attack the Falklands with laser-guided bombs. The 20 aircraft sold to the Argentine military are at Spain’s Albacete air base and will be shipped to Tandil air base south of Buenos Aires. Built in France, the multi-role fighter has a top speed of 1,320mph and a range of 500 miles, boosting Argentina’s ability to “pester” the Falklands from its southern air bases. Spain will provide spares and a training simulator and will train the initial batch of Argentine air force pilots selected

Worldwide Al Qaeda terror alert

Interpol has linked a worldwide Al Qaeda terror warning to a series of jailbreaks that have freed more than 1,500 suspected terrorists in the last fortnight. Detectives fear that inmates who escaped from Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, the al-Kwyfah facility in Libya and a number of other jails intend to hit British and other Western targets around the festival of Eid--which takes place this week. The Foreign Office has announced the temporary closure of the embassy in Yemen after receiving a tip-off that Al Qaeda was planning to attack a Western embassy there.

David Cameron’s decision to hire Lynton Crosby last November as the Conservative Party’s chief political strategist was a brilliant move that has helped revive the Tories’ fortunes ahead of the 2015 general election. Crosby, who helped John Howard win four Australian general elections, has emphasised the importance of focusing on traditional issues that conservative voters actually care about, including immigration, welfare reform, Europe and combating the power of the trade unions. He has shifted the core messaging away from issues that are a turn-off for many Conservative voters, including gay marriage, climate change and foreign aid, all of

Swarms of lawyers are having such a field day claiming payouts that even locals are shocked by the greed. Gil Larpenter was turning his mind to dessert after a lunch of fried chicken, okra and red beans with friends at Li’l Miss Winnie’s, an unprepossessing joint in the sleepy town of Springfield, 60 miles north of New Orleans. The humid stupor of a Southern summer blanketed life outside, dulling all but the indefatigable cicadas chirping away beneath the Spanish moss. You don´t have to be gay or even Russian to feel the wrath of the Russian government´s homophobia. You could go to jail if you are "pro-gay," whatever that means. And that´s under just one of a growing number of hate-infused bills becoming law at a time when, as it happens, Russia is preparing to host the world in the next Winter Olympics. The perverse anti-gay legislation is inflaming an atmosphere of persistent intimidation and at times deadly violence against Russian gays and lesbians. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice said Thursday that its remaining supply of phenobarbital expires in September and that no alternatives have been found. Two beliefs continue to shape debate on Obamacare. First, pre-existing medical conditions shouldn’t prevent people from obtaining affordable health insurance. And second, people who don’t want health insurance shouldn’t be forced by the government to purchase it. These may seem to be reasonable positions. But they are incompatible. That’s been shown by historical events, and it’s now being strikingly confirmed by recent experience in the emerging Obamacare insurance exchanges. The crux of the matter is what economists call the adverse-selection problem. Uninsured people with pre-existing conditions often face tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in
