| Former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords D-Ariz. launched a new policy group this morning dubbed Americans for Responsible Solutions. The organization calls for government action to stop gun violence. That sounds pretty standard, but in this morning’s USA Today op-ed, Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly specifically criticize the National Rifle Association – signalling that she will directly challenge the group’s influence. Calling the organization an “ideological fringe,” Giffords calls out the NRA leadership’s “defiant and unsympathetic response” to the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. “Rather than working to find the balance between our rights and the

Comments: Call me cynical, but I wondered why she went to Newtown. Now I know. Is she competent to formulate these comments or are the Democrats feeding them to her? Never let a crisis go to waste indeed.

The NRA has tried to get mayors of major cities in the US to stop plea bargaining gun crimes, to enforce current law using Project Exile. What has this democrat ever done to prosecute gun crime and why is she bent on disarming women subjecting them to pain and suffering at the hands of criminals? You would think she would stop this pandering and do something to stop gun crime. Instead she is working to increase it.

We are NOT an "ideological fringe". In fact, our values represent most of red America, conservative America.
Calling the organization an “ideological fringe,” Giffords calls out the NRA leadership’s “defiant and unsympathetic response” to the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
What was "defiant and unsympathetic" about the NRA´s response? The fact we didn´t lay down our arms immediately, wring our hands and wear a pink ribbon? What the hell is she talking about?
Because she is a Democrat and because she went thru a horrendous ordeal when she was shot, she thinks that places her standing higher than any other Democrat´s standing on this issue?
Go away, Gabby. You´re an opportunist. And by the way, do you have personal, armed security following you around to public appearances? Hm? Should he give up his gun? You okay with that?

"Balance" and "Reasonable Solutions" would suggest the institutionalization of the pschologically infirmed who present a danger to themselves and the public at large, not the infringement of an explicitly protected right.
The "fringe"-sort of thinking means denying God-given rights to every single American at the expense of a possibly, maybe, but not very likely to be effective effort to prevent such massacres.
If every right were subject to such "balance" where would it end? Offensive words? Inconvenient religious beliefs?

When one lives in the isolated world of the elite left I can see how the common American would appear to be on the fringe.
At least I agree with her on one point. We have seen far too much death to stand idly by. We saw it in Hitler´s Germany, Stalin´s USSR, Mao´s China. We must guard against the lunacy of the uneducated fringe that believe a disarmed society is a safe society. Perhaps that´s not quite what she means.

Had I been shot like Gabby Giffords, I too might be angry and on a crusade against firearms. Or, if I had brain damage, I might be influenced by others on such a crusade. James Brady, I believe, was put to this purpose after the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan which left Brady severely injured.
I might think and feel and act just the way such unfortunate victims do. But I wouldn´t necessarily be right, not just because I was the victim of a gun wielding assailant. Getting shot like that would confer no special wisdom or insight or even morality upon me. Indeed, it would if anything give grounds to doubt my perspective and objectivity on the issue of gun control.
Gabby Giffords and others were gunned down by a raving lunatic who everybody that had dealt with him for years KNEW to be a raving, dangerous lunatic. People were afraid of him. He was bizarre, threatening, paranoid and inappropriate in class. He was suspended from school pending a note from a psychiatrist -which he never obtained- saying it was safe for him to return. Four armed sheriff´s deputies delivered the suspension to his home. Yet no attempt was ever made by anyone, beginning with his parents, to force him to have a psychiatric evaluation.

Ms. Giffords is not thinking deep thoughts about anything. She will say what is put in front of her at an interview. Does anyone really think she herself "wrote" or even thought up that statement about the NRA? Her husband wants to be relevant and make some money. What better way than to solicit contributions for a foundation that will need a CEO and spokesman--him. His wife is just the smiling figurehead.
How awful it must be to be surrounded by users who would exploit your victimhood. There will be enough talk about "her" views and opinions, aided by the unwillingness to challenge her sainthood, that the public will be convinced that she´s ready to hold office again. If you say anything against her, it will be considered "mean-spirited."

Why are we so upset that this Democrat is simply stating; loudly and proudly, that the entire Democrat party is as racist as racist can be? That they HATE black people and want to see them dead?
We all know that the NRA was set up to ensure that Blacks; post emancipation and 14th Amendment ratification, were armed when DEMOCRATS came to deny them the full status of citizen that the REPUBLICANS fought and DIED for!!!
The Democrat party is THE party of Slavery and Racism!!!! Always has been, always will be.

The liberal Democrats will never admit that the problem is with the mentally ill and not the NRA, as the mental health industry and the mentally ill are liberal Democrat constituency groups, while the NRA and the small arms and related industries in the USA are conservative oriented constituency groups. Like almost everything else the politicians deal with, when you get to the bottom line, this is all political, and will have little affect in the future on dangerous mentally ill people who decide to perpetrate mass shootings, to bring attention to themselves while on their personal suicide missions.

Without wishing to offend Gabrielle Giffords, from what I´ve seen of her recently, I´m not sure she could either think of nor articulate the words ‘ideological fringe’ without much effort. Obviously, she is being offered as a mouthpiece for the Democrat party in the gun control debate. They should be ashamed for taking advantage of a disabled person, but we all know that shame is not a Democrat sensibility.

It is standard Leftist Orwellian practice to refer to political opponents as the fringe, extremists, radicals, out of the mainstream, etc.
Every single thing -every single thing, no exceptions- advocated by the militant Left today is contrary to the values, traditions, customs and practices of the Republic until the last half century. Abortion, marijuana, pornography and public obscenity, speech codes, political correctness, big government, normalization of homosexuality, hostility to religion(Islam excepted), anti-Americanism, class warfare, redistribution of wealth, more government regulations, private and public immorality, diversity, quotas, affirmative action, huge government debt, multiculturalism, lax or no border security, women in combat, government health care and, of course, attempts to restrict private ownership of firearms.
The mendacity of the Left is breathtaking. It amply confirms the "Big Lie" theory of Hitler et al., that if one lies boldly and brazenly enough, the masses will ultimately be persuaded that it is the truth. No one, they would reason, could possibly say such things repeatedly unless they were true.
It is the Left that is radical, extremist, innovative, and destructive of all traditions, norms and values in its quest for a brave new world. But time and time again Leftists and their media mouthpieces tell us that it is normal, traditional, everyday Americans, those whose beliefs and standards have changed little or not at all, who are the extremists, the radicals, and the fringe.

It’s a decision that will bruise egos, create legacies and deeply affect subsequent messaging battles. “Every time the bill is mentioned in the press, you either have a brand that´s positive or a brand that doesn´t mean anything or even hurts you,” said Frank Sharry, the executive director of the pro-immigration reform group America’s Voice. President Obama is eager to build public support for his health care overhaul in the few months remaining before its implementation, but waning enthusiasm from Democrats threatens his effort right out of the gate. Two-thirds of Democrats now believe Obama´s health care reforms will either hurt them personally or have no effect on their daily lives, a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday shows. In comparison, just 27 percent of Democratic respondents said the reforms would help them. The president has long struggled to convince independent and Republican-leaning voters that his health care blueprint would lower premiums and expand insurance coverage.

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

No one is more preoccupied these days with Hillary Clinton´s 2016 plans than the Beltway political class—not even the former presidential candidate herself. To hear some tell it, her decision will be dispositive for all other Democrats thinking of entering the race. And pundits and reporters aren´t the only ones positing the "The Hillary Factor": No less than the House Democratic whip, Steny Hoyer, told BuzzFeed, “I don´t know that anybody would run against Hillary…. If she runs, she clears the field.” It´s an understandable conclusion, given Clinton´s stature in the Democratic Party and her 70 percent

The Obama White House is scrambling to blame Friday’s abysmal March jobs numbers on the sequester’s trimming of the rate of growth in federal budgets that have yet to fully commence. After the Labor Department announced that a mass exodus of 663,000 workers left the U.S. workforce last month and that job creation fell 112,000 jobs short of projections, Obama’s top economic adviser Alan B. Krueger, took to the White House blog to blame the sequester: It is important to bear in mind that the March household and payroll surveys are the first monthly surveys to look

On Friday, Sean Hannity brought Pat Smith, mother of the late Sean Smith, on his radio program. The 34-year-old information management officer was one of four Americans murdered in the Benghazi embassy attack on September 11, 2012. In the chilling interview, a distraught Ms. Smith, in tears, pleaded for answers and spoke of the efforts to silence her. Ms. Smith first relayed how her son, prior to the attack, requested additional security in advance and warned the State Department: He did tell them, ahead of time, he typed it into his little typewriter over there,

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Beyonce and Jay-Z celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in Cuba this week. The couple, who married on April 4, 2008, took in the sights of Old Havana, visited a school, dined on a rooftop terrace and strolled the fan-filled streets in their island best.(snip).The power couple declined to answer journalists´ questions about their visit to the island nation, but some outlets are reporting that the moguls are there as tourists, though that would be illegal because of the half-century embargo the U.S. has on the Communist country.
