The Truth About Taxes, or,
the Work of 1000 Leeches

PJ Media, by Roger Kimball

“Tax policy” is one of those phrases that has a curiously amphibious effect. On the one hand, for most red-blooded individuals it cannot but act as a soporific: “Ah, tax policy, eh? Pardon me while I get the snifter refilled.” On the other hand: for anyone in whom the instinct for self-preservation is still intact, the phrase must also act as an existential tocsin, eliciting for many something akin to the storied “fight or flight” response. In the age of Obama, “tax policy” is both a weapon and an excuse: a weapon in the war to create a more egalitarian —

I make less than 40,000 a year. I will get paid the 15th of the month. I am shaking to think how high my taxes are going up. HR has sent out an e-mail with a heads up about it.

The one million dollar lottery winner received $450,000, after taxes. Taxes seen and unseen. The inflation tax is adding 10% onto the bill of every citizen. What inflation? The CPI is only up 2.5%. Really? The government has put the fix on those numbers by excluding items that are going up in price, or saying you have substitutes. The USA has the most corrupt government in the world.

Obama to preview anti-poverty proposals

President Obama will look to promote economic proposals designed to alleviate blight in some of the nation’s poorest communities at an event Thursday at the White House, according to a source familiar with the event. The president’s remarks are designed to highlight his call to designate so-called “Promise Zones” where the federal government would provide tax incentives, housing assistance, and education grants to fight persistent poverty, and come amid a broader populist push by the White House ahead of the Jan. 28 State of the Union address. White House officials have said Obama plans to lay out his ideas for addressing economic

On Saturday, Melissa Harris-Perry apologized on air for segment that made light of the Romney clan´s adoption of a young black boy. On Sunday, Mitt Romney accepted Harris-Perry´s "heartfelt" apology, noting, "I´ve made plenty of mistakes myself." I´ve watched the offending segment several times now. I can see how a white parent who´d adopted a black child (or vice versa) would find the segment flip and offensive. It would not have surprised me if those concerned about adoption, equality, and racism voiced some protest about the segment. Instead what we got was week of invective driven mostly by a conservative

A blast of Arctic air gripped the vast middle of the United States on Monday with the coldest temperatures in two decades causing at least four deaths, forcing businesses and schools to close and canceling thousands of flights. Shelters for the homeless were overflowing due to the severe cold described by some meteorologists as the "polar vortex" and dubbed by media as the "polar pig." Temperatures were 20 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit (11 to 22 degrees Celsius) below average in parts of Montana, North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and Nebraska, according to the National Weather Service. Sorry, Liberals: Obamacare

If you spend any significant amount of time talking to conservative activists who oppose Obamacare, you’ll eventually hear some variant on the theory that Obamacare was never meant to work. Instead, it was meant to destroy the existing health care system, and in the process pave the way for liberals to step in with the comprehensive health care fix the far left has always really longed for: single payer. There’s often a hint of conspiracy surrounding the accusation, as if President Obama and the White House senior staff had hatched some meticulous plot to spend a year struggling to pass a

A s upheaval sweeps into country after country of the Middle East, endemic instability has become the order of the day—with no end in sight. Egypt and Tunisia seem permanently on the verge of civil war, Syria in the midst of it; Libya and Yemen are disintegrating, with Lebanon and Iraq seemingly not far behind; unrest is seeping into Algeria, Morocco, Sudan, and Jordan; not even oil-rich Saudi Arabia or the smaller Gulf states seem immune. It´s a heady time for defenders of former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. In the closing days of 2013, the NSA´s surveillance program took two huge perceived hits, first in a preliminary ruling from U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon and later from President Obama´s Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technologies. The editorial boards of The New York Times and the Guardian rang in the new year with full-throated defenses of Snowden and advocated in support of clemency or a pardon. Although these are still early days and things could change over the next few months, conventional wisdom seems to suggest

No, don’t fire MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry. MSNBC now admits that “MSNBC has had an editorial and script review process in place” when it comes to their shows. Meaning: apparently the network saw the controversial Romney adoption piece ahead of time that has now backfired on Harris-Perry… and approved it. The better thing to do? Ask this question. Why is liberalism racist? That liberalism is racist is well beyond question. A horrific history of supporting slavery, segregation, lynching, and the Ku Klux Klan has morphed today into the relatively pacific if no less poisonous perpetual race-card playing of modern progressives. Because the Obamacare website is performing better than it did during its admittedly disastrous first weeks, and because congressional Democrats have not defected in the numbers that would have put the law’s near-term survival in question, supporters of the law believe that they have turned a corner. They are convinced that those of us who oppose the law can do no more than temporarily obstruct it, and that the benefits it is starting to bring to the American public will ultimately make it popular and then unchallenged. In reality, Obamacare remains an unpopular law with deep flaws. It is performing much

I’ll never forget watching the manhunt for one teenager after the Boston bombing while militarized storm trooper police raided neighborhoods and dragged people (some of them nearly naked) from their homes with their hands over their heads without warrants. The idea that our police drive armored tanks down suburban streets with gun turrets carrying weapons that not even Saddam Hussein owned made me far more terrified than the idea of a lone bomber on the loose. Obamacare is a flea bitten dog that never would have been enacted without wholesale and deliberate falsehoods said over and over again by Barack Obama and every Democrat cheerleader. It never would have been enacted without legislative sleights-of-hand and backroom bribes offered to key Democrats. It never would have been enacted and Barack Obama would likely not have won a second term without the willing negligence of a toothless “watchdog press” who refused to independently investigate or report obvious lies. Early last summer in her Georgian-style home near Washington’s Embassy Row, Hillary Clinton met with a handful of aides for a detailed presentation on preparing for a 2016 presidential campaign. Three officials from the Democratic consulting firm Dewey Square Group — veteran field organizer Michael Whouley, firm founder Charlie Baker and strategist Jill Alper, whose expertise includes voter attitudes toward women candidates — delivered a dispassionate, numbers-driven assessment. They broke down filing deadlines in certain states, projected how much money Clinton would need to raise and described how field operations have become more sophisticated in the era of Barack Obama.

Wisconsin Republican Gov. The Atlantic‘s Molly Ball wrote: The crisis began, he says, after last year’s presidential election, when Luntz became profoundly depressed. FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The federal Environmental Protection Agency has proposed new standards for wood stoves that would reduce the maximum amount of fine particulate emissions allowed for new stoves sold in 2015 and 2019. Maximum emissions would be reduced by one-third next year and by 80 percent in five years, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported. Fine particulate pollution is made up of solid particles and liquid droplets that measure 2.5 micrometers in diameter or less. The EPA currently certifies non-catalytic wood stoves if they produce less than 7.5 grams of fine particulate per hour. Fine particulate absorbed by breathing has
