Survivors of sniper

Before reporting for duty on Dec. 31, 1972, what proved to be the last day of his life, Police Cadet Alfred Harrell Jr., 19, was sharing a meal with his family at his grandmother´s house. He was leaving when he told his twin brother, Alton, "If anything happens to me, you have to take care of Alfred (III)," the cadet´s infant son. Alton Harrell promised to care for his nephew in case the unthinkable happened. Then, sniper Mark Essex killed Alfred Harrell Jr. and eight others in a rampage that started on that New Year´s Eve and continued a week

Comments:
Killer goes on a weeklong murder spree, killing 9 people and wounding 13 more, targeting police in particular. Yet his name is lost to obscurity and the spree is not part of Our National Discussion About Guns.

Turns out (all the way down in paragraph 9) that not unlike "DC-area Sniper" John Allen Muhammad and Lee Malvo, this killer was a Black Panther sympathizer (or member, sources differ) who targeted white people. Imagine if a white guy went around killing black people; there would be national holidays named after each victim.

Is everyone that Essex didn´t kill considered a survivor? Is it too late for ME to grieve? My god America loves victims and victimhood stuff.

He was a shooter not a sniper. A demented black man with a lot of hate towards whitey, but no sniper. I´m surprised they didn´t call his .44 carbine an assault rifle. I am very pleased that he is no longer with us, it was a horrible thing that he did, but with the divisiveness that is being promulgated by this administration I expect to see more like it.

Funny, never heard of this before. Can you remember the last time a white killer murdered 8 blacks in cold blood?

Dayton — An RTA bus driver survived being shot and stabbed in a seemingly random attack Monday he told police occurred during what he believes was some kind of gang initiation. Rickey Wagoner, 49, of Trotwood, was standing outside his bus in the 1900 block of Lakeview Avenue when three males assaulted him. He described his attackers as black teenagers who were wearing dark colored hoodies. All three wore dark blue bandannas to obscure their faces. "His bus had stopped running and he got out to see what the problem was," Dayton Sgt. Michael Pauley said. A 911 call to

In 2010, 992 retired New Jersey public employees pulled in a pension of at least $100,000 per year. By the end of 2013, that figure had swelled to 1,731 — an increase of about 75 percent. A new report from New Jersey Watchdog goes into detail on exactly who is getting a six-figure annual payout in retirement, although some still hold other tax-payer funded positions. The Watchdog report comes after it was revealed that the state´s pension fund is in a $47 billion hole. Two retirees are each receiving $195,000 per year — former Jersey City school superintendent Charles Epps and

The culture of corruption at the Newark Watershed Conservation and Development Corp. — alleged last week in a scathing 45-page report by the state comptroller — was apparently no secret to some in Newark’s political world. When queried by state investigators about payouts he received from the agency, one contractor said he was working on a local political campaign in 2008 and recalled the “buzz’ that had been circulating about NWCDC handing out contracts,” the report states. The contractor, Newark resident Edward McRae, discovered the buzz was no exaggeration. The report says McRae’s firm received nearly $390,000 in landscaping contracts from the

Novi Petrivtsi, Ukraine — The opulent residence of President Viktor Yanukovych has always been a closely guarded secret — and a symbol of the alleged corruption at Ukraine’s highest levels. On Saturday, after he fled the capital and its gates were thrown open, thousands streamed into the compound to get a first-hand look. Inside the walled compound known as Mezhyhirya, posh mansions stood amid manicured lawns. There were parks dotted with statues, ponds with fountains and wild ducks, a tennis court, a golf course and a colonnaded pavilion. As throngs of ordinary Ukrainians got their first look at Yanukovych’s luxurious estate, many

At least three-quarters of the New Jerseyans who have selected health insurance through the federal marketplace website have followed through by paying their first month’s premium, according to the three companies selling the policies. The state’s rate of paying customers is in line with figures reported across the nation. The figures are seen by some as an important barometer of success in the opening months of coverage. Critics of the Affordable Care Act have noted that with each enrollment update, federal officials have not revealed how many of the enrollees took the next step in purchasing a policy.

The enduring ban on transgender individuals serving in the US military has earned America a low ranking in the first global league table of LGBT inclusion in the armed forces. The US is placed at number 40 in the table of 103 countries’ armed forces as measured by their inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender service members. That puts it behind the militaries of countries such as Chile, Georgia and even America’s bête noire, Cuba. The US armed forces in September 2011 repealed the controversial policy of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, which forced gay service members to hide their sexuality.

It has the makings of a royal mess for “King Barack.” Monday morning’s Supreme Court argument about the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases went badly for the Obama administration — so much so that the real question before the justices seemed to be how severe the EPA’s loss would be. The administration’s solicitor general, Donald Verrilli, pleaded with the justices to recognize the “urgent problem” of climate change, because the “threat to future generations gets worse” with each passing year. But as the argument played out, the court’s swing justice, Anthony Kennedy, made clear that he
