Rescuers searched by air and sea today off the coast of Venezuela for the plane carrying Italian fashion mogul Vittorio Missoni, the man credited with turning his father’s fashion house into a global empire that includes hotels, housewares and bicycles. The 58-year-old left the remote Los Roques archipelago Friday on a twin-engine plane bound for Caracas, Venezuela. On board were his wife, two friends and two pilots. Thirty minutes after takeoff, the plane vanished into the Caribbean, leaving the tight-knit Missoni clan anxiously waiting for answers.
Comments: A more productive citizen than any of our political class, one can give him that.
The airplane in question is considered very safe and reliable and is used worldwide for short hops carrying passengers and trade goods. There were no obvious weather problems. Doesn´t say whether the flight originated in Los Roques or was a turnaround. Disappeared off radar only ten miles out. I will go out on a limb and guess that it was a fuel problem of some kind. Truly a mystery.
Socialism: As the U.S. fixates on ObamaCare, south of our border another "free and universal" health care system is collapsing, according to a report from the Associated Press. It´s an uneasy portent. The idea of free, universal health care has always seemed like a perfect solution. At least that was the thinking behind Venezuela´s constitutionally enshrined "right" to free health care since 1999, winning the late President Hugo Chavez a lot of elections and seeming to be the logic behind ObamaCare. But post-Chavez, Venezuela´s health care system is a shambles. Massive shortages of basic supplies plague both public and private hospitals. Everything
Venezuela´s consumer prices rose 5.1% in October, pushing the 12-month inflation rate to 54.3%, the highest mark since the late President Hugo Chávez took power in 1999. The news was released by the central bank on Thursday which also revealed that the scarcity index had reached its highest level since 2009. Hyperinflation is attributed to two main factors: one is ramped-up public spending from President Nicolás Maduro, Chávez´s successor. The central bank said the country´s money supply grew 70% in the past 12 months, much of it to underwrite a big increase in government spending.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro stated on Thursday a comprehensive air defense system will be installed in key points of the country´s mountains," including the slums in Greater Caracas and the whole country." The goal, said Maduro, is to "prevent any enemy, foreign, and imperialist military aircraft from entering the city. It is about securing life peacefully."
MANILA: The world’s most powerful typhoon this year gained strength on Thursday as it swirled towards the Philippines, forcing mass evacuations across a vast swathe of the disaster-weary nation. Authorities warned more than 12 million people were at risk from Typhoon Haiyan, which was generating wind gusts exceeding 330 kilometres (200 miles) an hour and set to hit on Friday morning. “This is a very dangerous typhoon, local officials know where the vulnerable areas are and have given instructions on evacuations,” state weather forecaster Glaiza Escullar told AFP. “There are not too
Politics: The Senate voted Monday to move forward with the Employee Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) in a misguided effort to ensure gay rights in the workplace. All it will do is heap chaos — and costs — on business. With everything from health care to immigration a non-starter in Washington, it´s no surprise that Democrats are now scraping bottom with a badly designed law intended to end supposed widespread job discrimination against gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders and others known as "questioning." But there´s no pressing need for such legislation, given the existing protections of the Civil Rights Act as well as the truly
Brazil’s intelligence agency monitored French spies it suspected of involvement in the 2003 explosion at a satellite launch base, the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper said Tuesday, and though it was finally determined they played no role. The newspaper said it had obtained documents from the Brazilian Intelligence Agency that showed its agents had tracked French spies near the Alcantara Rocket Launch Center in the northeastern state of Maranhao a year before the blast. When the explosion occurred, killing 21 engineers and technicians, suspicion fell on the French. Citing unnamed sources, the newspaper said the agency known as ABIN carried out
BEIJING - Chinese authorities investigating what could be Beijing´s first major suicide attack searched on Tuesday for two men from Muslim-dominated Xinjiang after three people suspected to be from the restive region drove an SUV into a crowd at Tiananmen Square and set it on fire. They killed themselves and two tourists on Monday in the square, the heart of China´s power structure and the focal point of the mass 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations brutally crushed the military. Police have spread a dragnet across the capital, checking hotels and vehicles, seeking two people suspected to be ethnic Uighurs, a Muslim minority from Xinjiang
Kanye West says it’s just not fair that Vogue put First Lady Michelle Obama on its cover but won’t feature his fiancé, Kim Kardashian. “There’s no way Kim Kardashian shouldn’t be on the cover of Vogue. She’s like the most intriguing woman right now. She’s got Barbara Walters calling her like everyday,” West told Ryan Seacrest in an interview on Tuesday. West said that “collectively” he and Kardashian are “the most influential” couple in fashion – especially compared to President Barack Obama and the first lady. "No one is looking at what [President] Obama is wearing," he said. "[And] Michelle Obama cannot Instagram
President Barack Obama’s loyal allies in the labor movement aren’t jumping to help the administration in the public battle over the problematic Obamacare website. Put off by new reinsurance fees on group health care plans that affect union members, Big Labor is largely sitting out the effort to enroll people for health care coverage or make the White House’s public case that the mangled rollout of HealthCare.gov doesn’t mean the entire Affordable Care Act is flawed. The AFL-CIO isn’t lifting a finger to help the White House — it remains in negotiations at the White House and on Capitol Hill to
SANTIAGO - Chile´s presidential frontrunner Michelle Bachelet said on Sunday that if elected she will fortify labor unions and roll out an ambitious $15 billion spending program - more than half of which would fund education. The center-left candidate, poised to sail to victory in either November´s general election or a runoff in December, said she wants to stop companies from "slyly" limiting union power. "We must strengthen unions and carry out a package of modifications to collective bargaining to allow more workers to practice this right," Bachelet said in a 200-page report outlining her policy proposals, published on Sunday. Bachelet said Chile,
Michelle Obama´s relationship with Princeton classmate Toni McCall Townes-Whitley, whose company earned the no-bid contract to design the disastrous Healthcare.Gov Obamacare website continued after the Obamas moved into the White House. Townes-Whitley and her husband even enjoyed "Christmas with the Obamas" at the White House in December 2010," according to a Facebook album created by Townes-Whitley. Although neither Michelle Obama nor Townes-Whitley has discussed their relationship, the Christmas event took place just seven months after Townes-Whitley joined CGI Federal as a senior vice president.
Senator Ron Johnson (R., Wis.) announced today that next week he will file legislation that will allow Americans to keep their previous health-insurance plans, as President Obama promised. The proposed bill, entitled the “If You Like Your Health Plan, You Can Keep It Act,” would, according to Johnson’s statement amend the Affordable Care Act “to make Obamacare live up to the promises of the politicians who sold the plan to the American public.” From the press release: One of the most important promises made by President Obama and Democrat congressional leadership to promote the Affordable Care Act was that Americans who were
President Obama apologized Thursday to Americans who are losing their health insurance despite his repeated promises that they wouldn’t, an unusual act of contrition for a president who has come under heavy criticism for misleading the public. “I am sorry that they, you know, are finding themselves in this situation, based on assurances they got from me,” Obama said in an interview with NBC News. “We’ve got to work hard to make sure that they know we hear them and that we’re going to do everything we can to deal with folks who find themselves in a tough position as
President Obama said Thursday that he is "sorry" that some Americans are losing their current health insurance plans as a result of the Affordable Care Act, despite his promise that no one would have to give up a health plan they liked. "I am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation based on assurances they got from me," he told NBC News in an exclusive interview at the White House. "We've got to work hard to make sure that they know we hear them, and we are going to do everything we can to deal with folks who find themselves in a tough position as a consequence of this," he added.
‘If you like your health-care plan, you will be able to keep your health-care plan. Period.” How serious was this lie, repeated by Barack Obama with such beguiling regularity? Well, how would the Justice Department be dealing with it if it had been uttered by, say, the president of an insurance company rather than the president of the United States? Fraud is a serious federal felony, usually punishable by up to 20 years’ imprisonment — with every repetition of a fraudulent communication chargeable as a separate crime. In computing sentences, federal sentencing guidelines factor in such considerations as the dollar value
In March 2010, Barack Obama placed a giant bet on the docility and stupidity of the American people, when he decided in the face of three huge electoral warnings to force his health plan down the unwilling throats of the American people. And by November 2013, it was clear he had lost. It was not going to work. It would never be popular. And it was falling apart on its own. The HealthCare.gov website unveiled on October 1 had immediate problems, which were quickly revealed as the tip of the iceberg, as many worse things lay below. “If you like
PRESIDENT OBAMA: You know, I regret very much that what we intended to do, which is to make sure that everybody is moving into better plans because they want ´em, as opposed to because they´re forced into it. That, you know, we weren´t as clear as we needed to be in terms of the changes that were taking place. And I want to do everything we can to make sure that people are finding themselves in a good position -- a better position than they were before this law happened. Keep in mind that most of the folks who are
Blind men see, the lame walk, dogs speak Latin. And in other news in miracles, President Barack Obama just apologised for something. In an interview with NBC news on Thursday he said "sorry" that some Americans are losing their health insurance as a result of Obamacare coming into effect--and for promising that this wouldn´t happen. [Snip] His words will be small comfort to the millions who risk losing their existing plans, but it´s still a moment of historical significance to hear Barack Obama apologise for screwing up. And he screwed up big time. We now know that members of the
You must understand, no matter what President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid say, that ObamaCare was designed for failure, not just for itself but all the insurance companies involved. When a poison pill is ingested into the system, the body starts to die, killing off the healthy organs and itself in the process... leaving a void for something far worse to take its place. It has been the progressive´s dream since 1912 to introduce national healthcare and control one-sixth of the nation´s economy. Now that they are so close to the finish line, they needed one final push to send
Ken Cuccinelli’s narrow loss in the Virginia gubernatorial race has become the latest battleground in the war between the so-called Republican establishment and Tea Party-type insurgents. The “establishment” blames the Tea Party induced government shutdown for alienating Virginians, a great many of whom work for the federal government. The insurgents blame the Republican Party for not providing enough money to Cuccinelli’s campaign. Some suggest that the “establishment” wanted Cuccinelli to lose out of spite and/or so it could blame the shutdown for his defeat. What does the Cuccinelli campaign have to say about this? Its chief strategist, Chris LaCivita, blames
President Barack Obama addressed the healthcare.gov website´s chronic dysfunctions Friday by quipping that he would fix it himself, ´but I don´t write code.´ The self-deprecating line came during a speech in New Orleans about shoring up U.S. exports through American port cities. But the moment also jokingly cast the president--perhaps unintentionally--as a hands-on administrator rather than the aloof executive that White House insiders have described in news articles, broadcast interviews and books. [Snip] Obama waited for audience laughter, but it didn´t come. His brief turn to address his calamitous health insurance overhaul included an admission that the Affordable Care Act
NBC´s Chuck Todd scored a huge interview with President Obama Thursday and opened things by immediately drilling down on the president´s relentlessly repeated lie that under ObamaCare you can keep your current insurance plan if you like it. The full interview is even more impressive than the clips that have been going around. Even after he elicits a "sorry" out of Obama, Todd keeps after the point for almost ten minutes. Ultimately, though, Todd came away with the impression that Obama doesn´t believe he lied. And Todd is probably right, which is a little unnerving. During his own interview on the Hugh
New U.S. ambassador to the UN Samantha Power didn´t waste her diplomatic skills on Vietnam veterans at a New York speech, praising actress Jane Fonda for "being outspoken on behalf" of her convictions. Power, 43, was speaking at the United Nations Association of the USA 2013 Global Leadership Awards in New York Wednesday, where honorees included Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who survived being shot in the head by Taliban thugs and is now an education advocate for girls. “Hi everybody,” Power said, according to a transcript. “You know life has changed when you’re hanging out with Jane Fonda backstage. There is
Hillary Clinton remains the most formidable presidential nomination frontrunner for a non-incumbent in the modern era. (snip)The only candidate in my mind who could catch fire, Massachusetts´ Senator Liz Warren, has already declared her support for Clinton. In fact, every single female Democratic senator is behind Clinton. What a difference that is from 2008. Much of the establishment was actually encouraging Obama to run in 2008. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid weren´t backing Clinton. Claire McCaskill´s endorsement of Obama in 2008 was particularly memorable. All three of them are now openly pleading for and endorsing Clinton for 2016.
