Violent demonstrations injure
dozens of police in Northern Ireland

CNN, by Peter Taggart

Original Article

Posted By:NorthernDog, 1/6/2013 12:02:03 PM

Belfast, Northern Ireland -- Petrol bombs, smoke canisters and hurled bricks have injured dozens of police during weeks of violence in Northern Ireland, officials said Sunday. At least 52 officers have been wounded since pro-British protests erupted in the Northern Ireland city of Belfast last month, police said. Authorities have arrested 70 people in connection with the violence. Tensions have been high since City Council members there voted a month ago to stop flying the Union Jack flag year-round, restricting it instead to certain days. Politicians, clergy and community leaders were meeting Sunday

I guess the Brits have to fly their flag somewhere since they are flying the muzzie flag in England.

Nothing like protesting to set off injuries and violence. eg., right to work passage, Wallstreet protestors.

Russian Troops Mass

MOSCOW — With a referendum on secession looming in Crimea, Russia massed troops and armored vehicles in at least three regions along Ukraine’s eastern border on Thursday, alarming the interim Ukraine government about a possible invasion and significantly escalating tensions in the crisis between the Kremlin and the West. The announcement of the troop buildup by Russia’s Defense Ministry was met with an unusually sharp rebuke from Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, who warned that the Russian government must abandon what she called the politics of the 19th and 20th centuries or face diplomatic and economic retaliation from a

Republicans won a nice victory in the Florida special congressional election yesterday, which the more gullible and/or excitable pundits are already overhyping. But via e-mail today, I received a reminder that Democrats should be rooting for an audience of two to be similarly over-interpreting the results: Supreme Court Justices Stephen Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. If the justices previously believed it a safe bet that they would be replaced by mainstream liberal justices when they retire, perhaps now they´ll realize their only reasonable course of action is to retire this spring, pending confirmed replacements. What Ginsburg and Breyer want, of

Amazon claims that a $79 annual membership for Amazon Prime provides free two-day shipping on "millions" of items, but for some products, the company is accused of encouraging sellers to inflate shipping prices, according to two recent lawsuits. (Snip) In what she hopes will be certified as a class-action lawsuit, Burke accuses Amazon of encouraging third-party vendors to include in the price of their items the amount they would have charged for shipping in their items to maximize revenue and profit margins. She also accuses Amazon of encouraging vendors to increase their prices to Prime members by the amount they

SAN FRANCISCO – Nearly 150 firefighters tackled a five-alarm blaze that burned at a building under construction in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood Tuesday evening. BRE Properties, which focuses on development, acquisition and management of apartment communities in California and Seattle, said the fire occurred at Block 5 of its MB360 development project, located on the west side of Fourth Street between China Basin and Mission Rock streets near AT&T Park. The fire, which was reported at 4:56 p.m., prompted the evacuation of nearby buildings, including the Strata at Mission Bay apartments. A woman who lives in an apartment directly

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — More than four days after a Malaysian jetliner went missing en route to Beijing, authorities acknowledged Wednesday they didn´t know which direction the plane carrying 239 passengers was heading when it disappeared, vastly complicating efforts to find it. Amid intensifying confusion and occasionally contradictory statements, the country´s civil aviation authorities and the military both said the plane may have turned back from its last known position between Malaysian and Vietnam, possibly as far as the Strait of Malacca, a busy shipping lane on the western side of Malaysia. How it might have done this without being

A man whose $50,000 coin collection was first stolen, then hocked, cannot recover it from Las Vegas´ famous "Pawn Stars" pawn shop. Reason: The hock shop claims it melted the coins down. According to a criminal complaint filed by the State of Nevada in Clark County Justice Court, a coin collection valued by its owner, David Walters, at up to $50,000, was stolen from Walters´ Las Vegas home in November 2013 by Walters´ niece, Jennifer Beckman. Court documents say Walters´ collection--kept in a bag hidden under a dresser--contained such rarities as a 1903 St. Gaudens $20 gold piece and Silver

That´s bad news for Democrats and probably will set off a new round of nervousness among party strategists and office holders as they look ahead to the fall. General Motors Co.´s (GM) recall of 1.6 million vehicles could prove to be one of the most costly in automotive history. The company not only faces fines. The legal liability triggered by what could be thousands of personal injury lawsuits may be just as damaging to the reputation of GM´s important brands, which almost certainly will erode sales. At the heart of the injury to GM is the accusation that some of its employees knew about an ignition switch fault as early as 2004. Fertility is the missing chapter in sex education. Sobering facts about women’s declining fertility after their 20s are being withheld from ambitious young women, who are propelled along a career track devised for men. The refusal by public schools’ sex-education programs to acknowledge gender differences is betraying both boys and girls. The genders should be separated for sex counseling. It is absurd to avoid the harsh reality that boys have less to lose from casual serial sex than do girls, who risk pregnancy and whose future fertility can be compromised by disease. Boys need lessons in basic ethics and moral reasoning

US officials believe that two communications systems aboard Malaysian Airlines flight 370 were shut down separately, 14 minutes apart - which indicates the plane did not come down because of a sudden catastrophic failure. The day before the Iowa caucuses in 2008, I wrote about the massive crowds of young people at Barack Obama rallies, noting that his candidacy would collapse “if they don’t show up.” The next night, after Obama’s victory celebration in Des Moines, Obama strategist Steve Hildebrand spotted me in a crowd. “The kids showed up!” he said fiercely. According to a big study from the Pew Research Center, they are less attached to marriage, religion, and political institutions than Gen Xers, Baby Boomers, and the other demographic flavors journalists love to use. They like their friends, their digital “social networks,” and their toys, and that’s about it.
