Perth Amboy — The driver for disgraced former Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Vas was sentenced today to five years probation for his part in a scheme to rig a lottery so he could buy a discounted home intended for low-income residents, state authorities said. Anthony Jones, 51, of Perth Amboy, admitted in August that he falsified personal financial information in order to qualify to buy a two-family home on Market Street through the Perth Amboy Home Program, the state Attorney General´s Office said in a news release. If you´re a corrupt Jersey Democrat, the press says you´re "disgraced" and tucks party affiliation neatly under the carpet. Nice probation for the accomplice, good luck collecting the restitution money.

Wearing striped clothing could help protect holidaymakers from mosquito bites, scientists have found after solving the mystery of why zebras are black and white. It is a question which has plagued biologists for centuries but now a team from the University of California, Davis, believe zebras’ unusual monochrome markings evolved in order to repel biting insects, such as horseflies and tsetse flies, which tend to avoid striped surfaces. (Snip) Varying explanations for zebra stripes which have been proposed since Alfred Russel Wallace and Charles Darwin debated the problem 120 years ago, have included a form camouflage, assisting escape from predators

Charlotte, NC — Some are crying foul over new regulations from the U.S. Army regarding women´s hairstyles. Thousands have signed a White House petition urging President Obama to order the Army to re-consider the regulations. The reason? Supporters say they´re "racially biased" against black women. The update to the regulations were made public Monday. Among the new, updated rules that have upset so many are the ones that clarify the hairstyles that are "Army appropriate. While the Army has banned dreadlocks since 2006, the new regulations clearly define specific hairstyles like twists, a popular style that black women

New York — Chick-fil-A widened its lead over rival KFC as the No. 1 chicken chain in the U.S. last year. Preliminary data from food industry researcher Technomic shows that Atlanta-based Chick-Fil-A held the lead because its locations are much busier, even though there are far fewer of them. Chick-fil-A first surpassed KFC as the top chicken chain in 2012. KFC is still much bigger globally. KFC, owned by Yum Brands Inc., has been struggling in recent years, despite a variety of new menu items like boneless chicken pieces and snack cups designed to fit

Bowing to critics, the Archbishop of Atlanta on Monday apologized for a lapse in judgment that made him proceed with a new, $2.2 million home for himself and said he may sell his Buckhead mansion if clerical bodies within the church recommend he do so. Noting that the “world and church have changed,” Archbishop Wilton Gregory said he “failed” parishioners when he didn’t fully consider the implications of his decision to move into the new home, made possible by a bequest from Margaret Mitchell’s nephew. New York — The Ku Klux Klan is on a recruitment drive across America with a new leafleting campaign, as membership numbers grow due to opposition to Barack Obama and increased immigration. Residents of towns in Texas, Louisiana, Illinois and Pennsylvania emerged from their houses over the weekend to find fliers attached to their doors, car windscreens or on the front lawn declaring “The KKK wants you.” The leaflets depict the outline of a hooded figure in white robes with Klan insignia pointing at the reader in the style of traditional military recruiting posters, complete with phone numbers and websites.

A few months back, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated for the record that 7 million Obamacare sign-ups by the end of March would constitute success. She was clear about it. But then February came, and February always stinks. It’s just a lousy month. You’re tired of winter, you’re still miles away from spring, and no one was signing up for Obamacare. That 7 million figure looked totally unreachable. So Sebelius does what every other member of the Obama administration does when confronted with inconvenient facts. She lied. Drinking Earl Grey tea could help guard against heart disease, it has emerged, after a study found that bergamot extract--a key ingredient in the hot drink--is just as effective as statins at controlling cholesterol. Scientists believe bergamot, a fragrant Mediterranean citrus fruit which gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavour, can significantly lower cholesterol. They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease. The study found bergamot could even be as effective as statins, used to control cholesterol but which can have side effects in

A RAND study pours buckets of cold water on the Obama administration’s claims that it has nearly reached 7 million sign-ups for Obamacare. The whole point of Obamacare, supposedly, was to insure the uninsured and bend the cost curve down. Those who had insurance were supposed to be able to keep it. Families were supposed to start saving about $2500 a year. If you believed the Obama administration. Reality, according to RAND‘s study, is that the Obama administration’s 7 million figure is deceptive. Supposing 7 million have actually signed up and paid their first premium — which is not a given,
