No easy task to identify a mass killer

| After every act of incomprehensible violence, the world asks whether the killer could have been identified ahead of time. It´s as automatic as the call for more gun control and better mental health services. (Snip) The vast majority of mentally ill people won´t commit assault, rape, arson or homicide, although the risk rises sharply among those who abuse drugs and alcohol.
|
Comments: This article reveals that people with both severe mental illness and substance abuse problems are more than 3 times more likely to commit a violent act than those with mental illness alone. Therefore, schoolchild drug screening would significantly reduce violence in schools.

Way easier than you think... just look in the phone book under women´s services. Look up the address of the clinic. Go to that clinic and wait until the guy in the exotic sports car rolls in and takes his reserved spot. That will be your local mass murderer.

Not just "no easy task", but rather an "impossible" task. Consider meteorology. It is a scientific discipline considering a handful of simple and easily-measurable phenomena: relative humidity, wind direction and speed, atmospheric pressure, and the like. Read Edward Lorenz and others from the 1960s onward. Then consider how it becomes more iffy to "predict" next week´s weather, or freak storms. Can the people trying to "predict" human behavior even specify (and importantly: "measure and quantify") the variables, as a meteorologist can?

Most likely, people around these mass killers had noticed increasingly alarming signs.
But you can´t go to the police and say you "think" something is going to happen, unless you know there´s a specific threat.
So people are left to try to access mental health services. Then again, you can´t force people to take their meds, for example. There was a case on Cape Cod where a kid had threatened his mother. He was to get his meds at a local hospital every day. He failed to show up one day. They called the mother ---too late. She was found, her son had killed and decapitated her.
This is a difficult and probably intractable problem... because we do not live in a utopia. Life is full of troubles, suffering, the unplanned horrors... along with what is good, and true and lovely.
So, no matter how hard totalitarians try, hazards can´t be eliminated from life. Rational people will try to do what is rational and not act in haste.
The first "remedy" totatalitarians apply is new and increasingly pervasive restrictions on liberty. (Think about the obamacare bill, for example.)

#3, you are spot on. The problem with these ´studies´ is that they start with an assessment by a stranger. Start by listening to the family and friends. They know when a person is becoming more and more unstable. But current laws forbid the mental health professionals to even speak with family and friends without the express permission of the patient! How stupid...imagine a fireman needing express permission from the property owner before starting to put out a fire. Or needing express permission from the parent of a drowning child before attempting a rescue. When a person with serious mental illness is destabilizing, he/she isn´t always capable of giving permission. Let the medical pros get pertinent info from whatever sources are available...and save lives.

Let the ACLU create a test to identify mass killers and then we put them to death. Problem solved.

The U.S. is increasing its oil production faster than ever and U.S. drivers are guzzling less gas. But you´d never know it from the price at the pump. (Snip) A major reason cited for high gasoline prices over the past two years -- fighting and political tensions in the Middle East and North Africa -- doesn´t apply this year. Libyan production has returned after collapsing during the country’s revolution two years ago. And higher production from the U.S. and Saudi Arabia has made up for Iran’s declining output in the face of Western sanctions.

U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said Tuesday that federal guidance on new laws legalizing marijuana in Colorado and Washington state is imminent as state oficials have been forced to tread cautiously in their efforts to implememt the laws. (Snip) Marijuana has been legalized for limited medical use in 18 states, as well as the District of Columbia, where applicants had to sign waivers releasing the city from liability if the federal government prosecuted the program’s participants. To proponents of medical marijuana, the Justice Department’s letter served as a reminder of the tenuous relationship between local and federal views on medicinal marijuana use.

In the years before the financial crisis, mortgage originators were rewarded with bonuses and higher pay for steering millions of Americans into risky and unsustainable home loans. Starting next January, however, brokers’ and loan officers’ compensation will no longer be based on the terms of the mortgages they originate, according to new guidelines released Friday by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The rules are the latest effort by the consumer watchdog to improve the way homeowners interact with the mortgage industry at every step of the lending process.

If gun violence is a problem -- and U.S. citizens overwhelmingly think that it is -- will our leaders act quickly and wisely to reduce gun deaths? Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

More than six months since Ambassador Christopher Stevens was assassinated by terrorists in Benghazi, the Obama administration is still trying to keep a lid on information about the attack. Congress and the American people need to know what happened the night of Sept. 11, 2012. Who did the killing and what was their motive? Why wasn´t help sent? And why did the administration lie about who was responsible? Members of Congress have asked hundreds of questions at hearings conducted by several investigative committees, but many of the most significant have been left unanswered.
