| A sesquicentennial is a really big deal! A century and a half ago, something happened that affects us today. So why was the abolition of slavery in the United States (if that isn´t a big deal, what is?) worthy of almost no attention when it marked its sesquicentennial on January first, 2013? (snip) President Obama is a media glutton, yet he had no words of praise commemorating this great day. Perhaps he felt that the USPS had done enough, issuing a commemorative postage stamp.

Celebrating it would remind the Left, and black people that it was the REPUBLICANS who ENDED slavery and the Democrats who DEFENDED slavery.
The "narrative" must NOT be damaged.........Stevens, Smith, Doherty & Woods were sacrificed to preserve the ´narrative´.

Obama hasn´t done anything to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the start of The Civil War. And I use to admire the Union troops for their sacrifices but now, well, a what a buch of chumps. Besides, Obama´s only ties to slavery are through his white mother´s family owning slaves.

It was a strange and meaningless proclamation. It freed the slaves in the country (the Confederacy) not under US control while protecting slavery in the states within the US. In other words, it did nothing.

Slavery was evil and needed to be abolished - no question about that. But up to the time of the proclamation, it was legal in the U.S.
Has anyone stopped to think what the implications of this action on the people who owned slaves? A slave cost (in todays dollars) about $20,000. When Lincoln "freed" them, he basically robbed law abiding citizens of some of their wealth. If someone had 5 slaves and needed them to farm and make a living for his family AND the slaves, legally, then that person would have lost ~$100,000 dollars of "property". I know it sounds bad is despicable by our standards, but there was no federal "buy back" program provided. The owners, again, being legal owners, were expected to take the financial hit all on their own.
This to me was a over-reach of the federal government. If you owned no slaves, then it cost you nothing. It was easy to pass such a proclamation if it didn´t impact you financially.

It´s one thing for President Obama to be cocky and overstate his prowess at governing. People are used to politicians grabbing credit, and besides, you can always rationalize when it comes to explaining why things didn´t quite work out as you claimed they would - "the sequester ate my recovery" being the latest successful-enough example. But sports is something else. The basketball either goes through the hoop or it doesn´t. That´s why President Obama´s history of braggadocio regarding his prowess at hoops is having a potent effect on his overall public image, especially with those who are favorably inclined to him.

Over at Salon, Chris Stedman, the Assistant Humanist Chaplain and the Values in Action Coordinator for the Humanist Community at Harvard, has published a vicious piece attacking me for calling attention to the persecution of gays under Islamic law. This comes just days after San Francisco´s Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution condemning my ads standing up for gays. Stedman and the transgender head of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, Theresa Sparks, could form a new organization: Gays for Sharia.

During his two day flurry of fundraising in Northern California, the President of the United States took it upon himself (and allow to be released to the public - not all of his fundraising comments make it to the masses) to praise the attractiveness of Kamala Harris, California Attorney General (snip) The remark, predictably, generated a little of what Allahpundit called a ´Blue on blue food fight." I suspect that was the intention. The president´s image as a manly man took a beating when he missed 20 of 22 basketball shots, all recorded on video.

The CEO of Starbucks basically told a shareholder that if the shareholder believes in traditional marriage he should dump his Starbucks stock. Historically the job of the CEO has been to make money and increase shareholder value. It would seem telling people who don´t share the CEO´s personal beliefs, whether it´s gay marriage or abortion, to dump the companies stock is not a pro-shareholder action. This is another example of the liberal belief that everything belongs to liberals because they´re just so darn much smarter than the rest of us

The Great State of Indiana is about to test statewide school choice on a meaningful scale. In the girl section of the Wall Street Journal last weekend Matt Ridley had an article on nice vs. nasty, cooperation vs. competition. Researchers have found, he writes, that families that stay together cooperate better than families that are far apart. This is not the first work to find mathematical evidence that there are conditions under which cooperative behavior drives out selfish behavior... So long as there is little geographic mobility, clusters of networked kin and friends develop, putting an advantage on being nice. Who knew?

RUSH: Folks, I don´t know how else to categorize this. We are living in a dying country. I don´t know how else to categorize what´s happening -- 88,000 new jobs. The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce. Ninety million. People not in the labor force grew by 663,000, and now 90 million. That´s the labor force participation rate. This is 1979 levels.
