A Busy Day for N.F.L. Coach Firings
New York Times, by Judy Battista

Original Article

Even by the tumultuous standards of the end of an N.F.L. season, Monday — Black Monday, as it is annually called — stood out. The conclusion of the regular season always signals the start of a whirlwind of firings and job searches involving coaches and top executives. This year, though, brought sweeping, swift change even to some of the most stable and patient — maybe too patient — teams in the N.F.L. Seven coaches and five general managers were fired by lunchtime in a day unequaled for its turmoil in recent memory. The Philadelphia Eagles ended Andy Reid’s

Comments:
While the "fiscal cliff" looms for US all, the real fears we are facing tomorrow in the bowl games and today in who got fired from our favorite football team present themselves. Like Hillary moving "fired" State employees to different jobs, so will the NFL. Life imitating art.

I´ll bet the Colt´s interim coach while Pagano was out will have tons of offers for a head job.Maybe I should have put that a different way.

Maybe Norv Turner returns to Dallas and takes over the offense from Jason Garrett. Garrett was the #3 QB when Troy Aikman and Coach Johnson won the first Super Bowl way back in the early 90´s.... they need help!

On second thought, Jerruh Jones thinks HE created the whole thing. (As Coach Johnson said, let me run the team, and you Jerry just write the checks!

Fired? Really? Don´t think so. These coaches will soon be dancing the musical chair dance. They will find jobs with another team. Norv Turner for example is no head coach material. He is an offensive coordinator. He will be hired as such in another town and when the head coach gets fired, he will become head coach again. You can´t fix stupid even in the NFL.

Tuscon - A Mexican man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday for Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry´s slaying, which led to the unraveling of the failed federal gun-tracking operation known as Fast and Furious. Manuel Osorio-Arellanes, 37, who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in October 2012 in exchange for avoiding the death penalty, apologized in court. "I regret what happened, sir," Osorio-Arellanes told the judge in Spanish. "I too was hurt. I don´t know what else to say. Please forgive me." He was part of a group of bandits who engaged in a shootout with Terry and three other Border Patrol agents in southern Arizona,

Of course it´s too early to talk about 2016. Now that we´ve gotten that out of the way... The most interesting dynamic so far is that the Democrats are behaving like Republicans — and vice versa. Since 1940, with the arguable exception of Barry Goldwater, Republicans have nominated the guy next in line. Thomas Dewey almost beat Wendell Willkie for the nomination in 1940, so in 1944 — and 1948 — it was his turn. Dwight Eisenhower, whom both parties wanted as their nominee, was a special case, given that whole invading-Europe-and-defeating-Hitler thing. Richard Nixon was Ike's vice president in 1960, and in 1968

Children with cancer ´denied

EU rules must be changed to allow more testing of potentially life-saving cancer drugs on children, say experts. The UK´s Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) says the current system acts as a disincentive to drug companies who can seek waivers to avoid doing the trials. Of 28 new cancer drugs approved in the EU for adults since 2007, 26 could potentially work in children, but 14 have been exempted from child testing. The ICR wants these "class waivers" to be scrapped. The European Commission is considering whether to change its guidelines.

House Republicans return to Washington on Monday still struggling to find a path to raising the Treasury Department’s borrowing authority, but the normally raucous caucus is in unusual agreement that the best option is to put the white-knuckle confrontations of recent fiscal wars behind them. Facing a timeline that leaves no room for trial and error, some party leaders were advocating a debt-ceiling solution that would wrap several popular, must-pass items around a provision to extend the federal government’s borrowing authority beyond the November midterm elections. That approach has drawn support from some surprising quarters,

In the midst of a busy 2012 election cycle, Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin´s offhand remark to a local television station about what constituted "legitimate rape" might have slipped under the radar. But Akin was a prime target for an opposition research powerhouse, American Bridge 21st Century, and their Akin tracker was on the ball. Within hours, the Democratic "super PAC" had uploaded the clip to YouTube and pushed it to reporters — ensuring that it blew up on Twitter and headed to the top of national news. Swiss voters have narrowly backed a referendum proposal to bring back strict quotas for immigration from European Union countries. Final results showed 50.3% voted in favour. The vote invalidates the Swiss-EU agreement on freedom of movement. Fiercely independent Switzerland is not a member of the EU, but has adopted large sections of EU policy. The commander of Iran’s Northern Navy Fleet, Admiral Afshin Rezayee Haddad, is quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying Saturday that the vessels have already begun the journey to the Atlantic Ocean via waters near South Africa. Iranian officials said last month that the fleet consisted of a destroyer and a logistic helicopter carrier, which will be on a three-month mission. Haddad says the fleet is approaching U.S. maritime borders for the first time.

SAN ANTONIO — We recommend incumbent John Cornyn for the GOP´s U.S. Senate nomination, based on unmatched experience and decades of service to Texas. The theme among a bevy of challengers seems to be that Cornyn is a CINO, a conservative in name only. This is not just counter-intuitive but counter-factual. Various ratings — liberal and conservative — have agreed on one thing, Cornyn´s conservative credentials are genuine. Not conservative? Cornyn is No. 2 in Senate leadership and diverged only slightly from the conservative playbook in a year in which he offered a measure that would further beef up security at the
