Who’s Attacking the Constitution Now?
Reason, by A. Barton Hinkle

Original Article

Posted By:zoidberg, 12/31/2012 10:33:01 AM

Many ardent supporters of the Second Amendment are not quite so ardent about the First. And vice versa. A few days ago CNN host Piers Morgan got into it with the head of a gun-rights group. Now more than 87,000 people have signed an online petition demanding that Morgan, who is British, be deported for his “hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution.” But the First Amendment does not exempt British nationals, which means those signing the petition are also committing a hostile attack against the Constitution. The irony is probably lost on them.

Comments:
An attack on cafeteria Constitutionalists.

And we have senior Democrats like freaking Harry Reid trying to get Rush Limbaugh taken off the air, attacking him on the floor of the Senate...but that´s not an attack on the First Amendment...that´s just them exercising THEIR free speech rights.

Is Morgan a U.S. Citizen? If he is then he does qualify for protection under the U.S. Constitution.

But, even if he IS, how is the free speech expression of those who sign the petition any violation of anything at all? Are they not free to express their views?

The Constitution was never intended to be protection from the consequences of expressing one´s views. It only gives them the freedom to do so.

Can Piers Morgan own a firearm in the U.S. legally? No, he is not a citizen. So would it not go to REASON he is not protected by the 1st Amendment?

Wankers like Piers Morgan are ticks on the body politic, and should be unscrewed and squashed, and then the whole area douced with alcohol. Salud

Piers Morgan should go back to England; his views are of no concern here in America; actually he is a moron, and his views do not count anyway.

Freedom of speech denies government imposed censorship, it says nothing about individuals condemning what was said. I suspect that deportation, a government act, would be ultimately found unconstitutional if the petition was ever acted on. On the other hand, "fair" is the ultimate reason liberals use to justify almost everything they propose. The government of England denied Michael Savage entry into that country based on things he said on his radio show. Seems only fair if we use the same criteria and do the same to Morgan.

Nobody is going to deport Piers Morgan. I doubt if anybody is seriously expecting that. The White House petition was just a way for the collected populace to give him an internet raspberry that went viral. Piers will stay with CNN, but now he knows that a huge number of Americans regard him as a moronic, arrogant blowhard. And that is all good.

The First Amendment to the Constitution is a prohibition aganinst CONGRESS. "Congress shall make no law...". I can do as I please re: Mr. Morgan without it being a constitutional crisis. Congress, on the other hand cannot do as they wish with Mr Morgan. Now, let´s discuss McCain-Feingold...

This is an embarrassing and dumb essay. First, the one person in America who is pleased beyond words by this kerfuffle is...Piers Morgan. His lousy, narcissistic talk show was almost totally unwatched and he was likely going to get fired. He has made it crystal clear over and over again that he would rather people know who he is and hate him than not know who he is and ignore him. That´s been his whole career plan and it has made him very rich (net worth ~ $20 million).

Well guess what? His ratings are up because of this non-story and he´s milking the phony controversy with every drop of energy in this body. Second, as has been pointed out by numerous observers, in this example by James Taranto of the WSJ, here’s the reality. "Your (Morgan´s) opinion is protected; your presence in the U.S. is not. See Kleindienst v. Mandel (1972)” Taranto tweeted to Morgan.

Taranto linked to transcripts from a 1972 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the U.S. Attorney General’s refusal to allow a foreign journalist into the United States did not violate the First Amendment. The case resulted from Nixon administration attorney general Richard Kleindienst’s refusal to grant a temporary nonimmigrant visa to Marxist Belgian journalist Ernest Mandel.

Morgan is a sleazeball who made his name in the British tabloids (editor of "News of the World") and was caught up in the "phone hacking" scandal. He was fired in Britain. That´s the #1 reason he came to America. And now "Reason" is helping him out. That´s dumb and embarrassing.

Hey, stupid, the petition is nothing more than a First Amendment expression of contempt for a contemptible public figure. There will be no governmental action against the nitwit puff fish for what he said or by virtue of the petition.

Why are so many of America´s political enemies, (-enemies of the tried & true principles of freedom itself as proved by the successes of the Constitutional ideals), given any credibility when, after experiencing the historical lessons of just the recent past century, this re-emerging statist gang of Liberty´s naysayers represent the same old failed political fabrications which have employed the same pattern of deceit & brutality throughout history in order to attain their pyramid scams over the lives of others? Even when these historical statist elites have managed through brute force to dictate over the citizens of their particular realm for a time, eventually they have all demonstrably failed, been destroyed and are lost in history´s ash heaps. ...Yet statist PC scammers always seem to come along & try the same trickery agenda all over again.

Freedom & equality for every human life is respected & secured in the US Constitution, which has proved its worth in the USA, which remains the beacon of Life, Liberty and Justice for ALL on the planet.

Oh, lighten up, Hinkle. As someone else said the petition is tongue in cheek and only the most obtuse think Morgan will really be deported because of it. It was just a way for people to express their distaste for that British jerk in a somewhat humorous way.

Bah, humbug!
No one is seriously proposing execution, imprisonment, or even public flogging for this worthless dolt. Though selling tickets for the viewing of the latter might help defray the national debt. Scratch that -- the idea´s too tempting.
But as a non-citizen, Piers has no rights to be inside the borders of the nation. None whatever. He is permitted here, like any other non-citizen, at OUR sufferance. He can be deported with no notice whatever.
Since he´s proven himself to be a meddlesome, ungrateful guest, it´s time for him to leave. Before midnight. Now.

The official Republican response to President Obama’s State of the Union address last night was from Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. But the Republican Party is a house (partially) divided now, with a self-conscious rebel wing, and the semi-official “Tea Party” response came from Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul. Paul won his Senate seat on a Tea Party anti-establishment wave in 2010, defeating establishment favorite Trey Grayson for the GOP nomination. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) recently came out in favor of legalizing hemp cultivation, thanks to the persuasive talents of fellow Kentucky senator Rand Paul and the state´s agriculture commssioner, James Comer, both Republicans. The New York Times cites McConnell´s conversion as evidence that the cause, long identified with hippies and stoners, has gained respectability among conservatives. The fact that it has taken so long is testimony to the plant´s powerful symbolism, because there is no logical reason to stop farmers from growing industrial hemp, a version of cannabis with negligible THC, even if you support marijuana prohibition.

As recreational drugs go, marijuana is relatively benign. Unlike alcohol, it doesn´t stimulate violence or destroy livers. Unlike tobacco, it doesn´t cause lung cancer and heart disease. The worst you can say is that it produces intense, unreasoning panic. Not in users, but in critics. Those critics have less influence all the time. Some 18 states permit medical use of marijuana, and in November, Colorado and Washington voted to allow recreational use. Nationally, support for legalization is steadily rising. There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.
