At the White House on Friday, President Obama apparently told the “summoned” that he wants Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell to reach a deal on the income threshold for tax hikes along, I assume, with a few other partial “cliff” fixes. If they don’t reach a deal, Obama will have Reid call for a Senate vote on Obama’s plan to increase taxes on everyone earning $250,000 or more, plus an extension of expiring unemployment benefits. The idea is to apply pressure on McConnell to reach a deal in order to avoid a vote on Obama’s plan.
The whole charade is a shameful debacle. The games the democrat rats play is some kind of pretzel logic. Reread to further enhance comprehension, the text gets complicated. Reid second guesses this, fake out McConnell to get him to do that. Someone with some smarts on the pub side should go in there with a proverbial baseball bat and shake up "negotiations" considerably, crack some knee caps. What I´d give to be able to sick some of the oh so smart numerous Lucianne posters on them! Those foolish dems would be begging for New Years to come sooner.
Strange how Obie isn´t getting much blowback from middle class taxpayers on the whole deal regardless how it plays out. Could be because most are on holiday right now. Or there is blowback, but the msm is hiding it.
I really don´t think the pubs are feeling any pressure. Sadly, none of the proposals currently on the table include any SIGNIFICANT spending cuts. Unless you consider the cliff to be the only "proposal" that´s on the table.
My uneducated guess is that the Republicans will cave and agree to higher rates on the "rich" and spending cuts 10 years down the road that will never happen. IMHO we have already gone off the cliff and real question is how hard will the landing be? Looks to be a very hard landing, spending a trillion dollars a year we don´t have on programs and departments we don´t need. Congress can´t stop the spending. It will continues to increase every year with no reduction in the national debt in sight.
The pubbies won´t stand up--and why do Biden and others get a raise when zippy wants to take money from everyone else? Man, this is one screwed up country and it just seems to be getting more screwed-literally and otherwise. Stand up Boehner--Stand up McConnell-- JUST SAY NO!!!
Gee, the Pubbies are not in power but they get reamed out for not stopping things. Someone voted for this rotten prez and all because he was black. Or gray, whatever, and goofballs voted him in twice. Listen to the dims howl when their voters write them and tell them how they feel about tax increases. Term limits time.
So what are the Republicans to do? Anything they offer up will be vetoed by Obama, Reid or the Democrats. I´m sick of the blame being placed on the Republicans. Including on this site. You really think Obama is going to accept anything from Boehner? What world are you living in? Yet, the bashing of the Republicans continues. Don´t you get it - that is what Obama is trying to accomplish - a mess of the economy and the Republicans in disarray.
Most Americans don´t read and have no idea what this means. It is not just the 47% who carry everyone else´s freight who will be hurt. The cost of everything will be going up sharply. I say bring it and let these Obama loving freaks feel the pain. The howling will be loud and totally worth the price.
Whatever gets to the House, Boehner should not put it to a vote unless a majority of Repubs will vote for it. There´s talk that he will let Dems pass a bad bill with minority Repub support.
I´m tired of hearing Republicans say that they control only 1/3 of the legislative process, so they´ll have to roll over. Their horrible fate could be demonization by the press, or even denigration by obama in the SOTU address. What about saving our country from absolute doom? At least fight for us while you hold the House!
#11 has it right, we have already gone over the cliff and are watching the bottom coming up to meet us. I don´t see it as a bad thing because the strong will survive and prosper but the losers will get to feel reality smack them in the face - hard.
If Democrats were serious about only taxing "the wealthy," and if Republicans were serious about NOT taxing small businesses that get lumped in with those mean capitalist coupon clippers the Democrats want to burn at the stake, then they would both have proposed the obvious solution long ago.
If they were honest, they would have agreed to impose the tax increases only on income over $250K reportable on 1040 lines 7, 8, 9, and 13. That would exclude ALL small business income reportable on schedule C and line 12, subchapter S earnings reportable on line 17, and all farm income reportable on line 18. The tax increase would ONLY apply to income over $250K derived from wages, interest, dividends, and capital gains. In other words, RICH people. And I´m sorry, but if your salary is over $250,000 a year, or you collect more than that in interest and dividends, most Americans would consider you pretty rich. This really is not that hard.
#17 posters analysis makes the most sense! the republicans need to QUIT THE BLAME GAME within their own party leaders & show some support!..#5 sorry you don´t have any ´faith in the Republican party, the house or the senate to do the right thing, I believe they have tried, however meet with nothing but opposition from the Demorats & their leader!
There is one thing that I have witnessed over a long period of time. And that is, when Senators and Representatives are elected for the first time. they go all out to do just what they promised to their constituents they would do. However, as time passes and they keep getting re-elected, they seem to be more interested in "getting a deal" made, regardless of the circumstances. And the old, worn out excuse is "I did the best I could given the opposition". That´s what you´re going to see and hear this time too.
Pubs are going to be blamed regardless. Time to do the right thing and just say "No!". Let the 47% (whose numbers will be drastically reduced once we´re over the cliff) feel the consequences of their vote. Yes, the rest of us will be squeezed, too, but life isn´t fair. At least many of those insulated from income tax consequences will face them again and be forced to think a bit more responsibly.
Strategically, this would send a shot across the bow as we approach the debt ceiling. Then it will be time to really get tough. The best way to stop the spending is to cut up the credit card and force NerØbama to live within his revenues. Yes, he will concentrate funds on blue states and his liberal friends, but where will that leave the swing voters who sat out this election? They will be enraged, and that rage will ultimately play out in 2014. It´s all about 2014 at this point, and the Dems shouldn´t feel so confident as to the outcome.
We´re in a war for the future of the country. It´s time to fight it.
Playing checkers; playing chess. Someone, anyone, PLEASE tell these jerks this is NOT a game. This is....or perhaps it was America before Two Won turned us into forward banana republic. Put your marbles back where they belong pubbies and stop playing with them. And DO NOT even think about playing with the balls to begin a game of hoops. WTP know you don´t possess these.
Can anyone imagine how horrendous it must be to try and negotiate with Obama and Reid ? Does anyone think they care what Republicans want ? Or what´s best for all Americans ? The Republicans and 16 Democrats , passed a clean bill extending the Bush tax cuts for all Americans last summer. Boehner sent the bill to the Senate and Reid threw it in the garbage. Yelling and screaming , like many posters and talk radio armchair Congressmen advocate , will accomplish what , exactly ? The majority of Americans elected Obama-twice. The Democrats and liberals control the media . Democrats control the Senate. Within a few years, they will control the USSC . Reid is trying to do away with the filibuster , so the 53 Democrats and 2 Indys can streamline Obama´s lifetime federal judicial appointees without the 45 Republicans having any say. The Republican majority in the House will shrink by 8 seats come January. Boehner has little leverage except for the Coulter option.
Via Amanda Turkel at Huffington Post comes news that The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has released a video “reenactment” of the shooting of Trayvon Martin in order to encourage people to oppose “Stand Your Ground Laws”: The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has released a chilling new online ad reenacting the night Travyon Martin was killed, in an effort to stop the controversial Stand Your Ground laws nationwide. The nonprofit group uses actual audio from the 911 calls that shooter George Zimmerman and a witness made that night in Sanford, Fla. After the sound of a gunshot, people in
At first, actress Susan Sarandon expected to back Council Speaker Christine Quinn in her bid to become the city’s first female mayor. But she had to evaluate her other priorities as well. Citing Ms. Quinn’s positions on term limits and her foot-dragging passing paid sick leave legislation, Ms. Sarandon threw her support behind the city’s public advocate, Bill de Blasio. “As a woman, initially I was interested in Quinn,” Ms. Sarandon declared tonight at a fund-raiser at the swanky SPiN Galactic New York ping pong club. “It became clear to me that, you know as a woman, you can’t just
Today, Ed provided some in-depth coverage of the UK detainment of Glenn Greenwald’s civil union partner, David Miranda. I have to take exception with something from Ed’s write-up, and it’s found right in the opening paragraph. The UK can detain anyone crossing its borders for nine hours without charges under Schedule 7 of its Terrorism Act, using that time to determine whether a suspect constitutes a terrorist threat. They used almost every minute of that time to detain David Miranda, the civil-union partner of Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian journalist reporting on the NSA scandal, and confiscated all of the computer
BOZEMAN, Mont. — The U.S. Supreme Court is making decisions that should be left to Congress or the people, from wiretapping to "inventing" new classes of minorities, Justice Antonin Scalia said Monday. In an apparent reference to the court´s recent decisions on gay marriage and benefits for same-sex couples, Scalia said it is not the function of the courts to create exceptions outside the Constitution unless a majority of people agree with them. "It´s not up to the courts to invent new minorities that get special protections," Scalia told a packed hotel ballroom in southwestern Montana. The Supreme Court earlier this year cleared
WASHINGTON — The Interior Department has warned that the proposed Keystone XL pipeline could have long-term, damaging effects on wildlife near its route, contradicting the State Department´s March draft environmental assessment, which concluded the project would have only a temporary, indirect impact. In a 12-page letter sent as part of the public comment on the draft assessment, the Interior Department repeatedly labels as inaccurate its sister agency´s conclusions that Keystone XL would have short-lived effects on wildlife and only during the project´s construction. "Given that the project includes not only constructing a pipeline but also related infrastructure, access roads, and power lines
One would be hard pressed to find a more significant impeachable offense than aiding and abetting the sworn enemies of the United States, especially when any such support includes sending weapons to our murderous adversaries. A crime on that scale would certainly be made all the more serious if those same enemies turned around and utilized the U.S.-provided arms to kill Americans. We are not here referring to the so-called “Fast and Furious” scandal in which President Obama’s Justice Department purposely allowed, with deadly consequence, licensed firearms dealers to sell weapons to illegal straw buyers with the intent of tracking the
The Sunday column from Margaret Sullivan, the New York Times’s public editor, was an interesting and balanced consideration of a topic that will only gain in relevance to political journalism: how should reporters cover candidates who aren’t (yet) candidates? The subject was Hillary Clinton and the Times’s decision to devote the resources of a full-time reporter to cover Clinton–who has not yet announced that she is running for president–as a distinct beat, a full three years before Election Day 2016. Sullivan quotes academics and media watchers raising the three crucial questions: Will the dedicated Clinton beat serve to pre-anoint her and
Washington finally declared a truce on the death tax this year, with estates now taxed at 40% with an exemption of $5 million. President Obama insisted on preserving this tax to spread the wealth, though it raises less than 2% of federal revenue and discourages lifetime savings, as even a 1981 study by Mr. Obama´s former chief economist Larry Summers showed. Now the death-tax debate has shifted to state capitals, with mixed results depending on which party runs the state. Prior to 2001, states could impose an estate tax of up to 16% with no extra burden on their residents because
Boston marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev suffered multiple and severe gunshot injuries before his capture in April, newly released court documents show. The most serious of the injuries was a gunshot wound that appeared to enter through the left inside of his mouth and exit through the lower left side of his face, said Stephen Ray Odom, a trauma surgeon who treated Tsarnaev at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. "This was a high-powered injury that has resulted in skull-base fracture, with injuries to the middle ear, the skull base, ... his ... vertebrae ... as well as injury to the pharynx, (and)
Welfare benefits and the loss of leisure time still act as disincentives to earning a salary despite improvements in the welfare-work tradeoff since federal reforms in 1996, according to a report published Monday. The report by the Cato Institute found that the equivalent wage value of welfare has increased in 33 states since 1995, when the think tank first released a report on the issue. Benefits in the District of Columbia expanded by $6,850 to a total package equivalent to $50,820 in wages, the second largest increase behind Vermont. Welfare “pays” more than $15 per hour in 13 states. However, the report also
Scott Brown, please come back to Boston. This is silly, this road trip to the Iowa State Fair. Get back here, the governorship is winnable. Take the plunge, win it, work it, and forget about 2016. Stop with the beery tweets and get serious — if the Republicans lost with a moderate from Massachusetts last year, why the hell would they go for another one in 2016? The moderate in this fight is Gov. Chris Christie. He’s already in office, he’s about to be re-elected, and his state has more electoral votes than Massachusetts. Scott’s got an ego, and it’s easy to see
Survey the Middle East, and there is nothing about which to be optimistic. Iran is either fueling violence in Syria or racing toward a bomb, or both. Syria is past imploding. Take your pick in a now-Manichean standoff between an authoritarian, thuggish Bashar Assad and al-Qaeda franchises that envision a Taliban-like state. There is increasingly not much in between, other than the chaos of something like another Sudan. Our Libyan “leading from behind” led to Mogadishu-like chaos and Benghazi. Do we even remember the moral urgency of bombing Tripoli as articulated by the ethical triad of Hillary Clinton, Susan Rice, and Samantha Power?
Cairo - The Egyptian government acknowledged that its security forces had killed 36 Islamists in its custody Sunday, as the military leaders and the country’s Islamists vowed to keep up their fight over Egypt’s future. (Snip) While confirming the killings of the detainees on Sunday, the Ministry of the Interior said the deaths were the consequence of an escape attempt by Islamist prisoners. But officials of the main Islamist movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, described the deaths as “assassinations,” and claimed that the victims, which it said numbered 52, had been shot and tear-gassed through the windows
It’s hard to fathom how or why our administration ever thought the Muslim Brotherhood saw democracy as other than a means to an end — and a particularly repellent one at that — in the first place. It’s not as if the MB is subtle. They have proclaimed who they are since their founding by Hasan al Banna in 1928 and have not wavered in any significant way since in their global jihadist goals. They have also been unstinting in their massive misogyny, homophobia and rigid support of Shariah law über alles (quite literally über alles, since the Brotherhood were —
"So, how many black friends do you have now?" It´s a question I get asked a lot, ever since I set out five years ago to find out why I, your typical middle-class white person, had no black friends at all. I do have black friends now, actually. Several. But I rarely offer that information when asked, because to ask white people how many black friends they have is to pose the wrong question. (Snip) It helps if white people know how to be better white people.
The images of three youths police say murdered Melbourne baseballer Christopher Lane have emerged. The Oklahoma teens, who face first-degree murder charges, have been named as Chancey Luna, James Edwards and Michael Jones, News.com.au has reported. But their parents yesterday protested their innocence. Jennifer Luna, whose son is suspected of firing the fatal shot, claimed her son was at home saying: "My son is not that way. My son is a good kid." Earlier today, former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer has urged Australian tourists to boycott the US in the wake of the shooting murder of the Melbourne baseball star.
The 16-year-old girl’s once-beautiful face was grotesque. She had been disfigured beyond all recognition in the 18 months she had been held captive by the Comanche Indians. Now, she was being offered back to the Texan authorities by Indian chiefs as part of a peace negotiation. To gasps of horror from the watching crowds, the Indians presented her at the Council House in the ranching town of San Antonio in 1840, the year Queen Victoria married Prince Albert. ‘Her head, arms and face were full of bruises and sores,’ wrote one witness, Mary Maverick. ‘And her nose was actually burnt off to the bone.
During an exclusive to web interview with “This Week,” Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol said Sarah Palin — after having hastily stepped down as Alaska’s governor in 2009 – might be able to rehabilitate her political career by winning a Senate race in her home state next year. “I think the way Palin would possibly resurrect herself, if that’s the right word, or rehabilitate herself I guess a better way of putting it, [is] run for Senate in Alaska in 2014,” Kristol said. “I’m not urging that, I’m just saying if I were her adviser I would say ‘take on
Critics say a Muslim group picked the wrong day — Sept. 11 — to march on Washington to complain about religious profiling and President Obama’s handling of an investigation into the terror attacks that rocked America 12 years ago. The mass demonstration, called the "Million Muslim March," was changed to a more mainstream-sounding event, "Million American March Against Fear," but the name did not seem to gain much traction and has apparently reverted back to its original title. American Muslim Political Action Committee (AMPAC), which is organizing the march, claims Muslims nationwide have been the victims of anti-Islamic bigotry in
Waiting to Exhale author Terry McMillan alternately uses Twitter to bash the GOP and share warm and fuzzy life tips with her followers. Today´s social media message falls squarely in the former camp. McMillan, an Obama apologist of the highest order, lashed out at former Gov. Sarah Palin, promising violence should the two women ever end up in the same place at the same time.McMillan previously compared the GOP to Hitler and called Mitt Romney a sociopath.
When Craig Mazin first met his freshman roommate, Rafael Edward Cruz, he knew the 17-year-old Texan was not like other students at Princeton, or probably anywhere else for that matter. (Snip) By Mazin’s account and those of multiple members of Princeton’s class of 1992, the Ted Cruz who arrived as a college freshman in 1988 was nearly identical to the man who arrived in Washington as a freshman Republican senator in 2013: intelligent, confident, fixated on conservative political theory, and deeply polarizing.
The military judge presiding over the case of the Fort Hood shooter has blocked several key pieces of evidence that prosecutors said would explain the mindset of the soldier accused in the 2009 rampage. On Monday it was revealed that the judge has banned prosecutors from giving any speculation into Major Nidal Hasan’s motive in the shooting that left 13 dead and 30 others wounded, including the belief that he felt he had a ‘jihad duty’ to carry out the attack. Prosecutors had asked the judge to approve several witnesses and various evidence to support what they allege motivated Hasan
WASHINGTON — Watch out, Bo — there’s a new dog in town. The White House says the Obamas have added a second dog to the first family. Her name is Sunny, and she’s a Portuguese Water Dog — the same breed as the Obamas’ other dog, Bo. The White House says that breed works well for the Obamas because of family allergies. Sunny was born a year ago in June in Michigan and arrived at the White House Monday. She’s expected to join Bo for evening walks and the occasional Oval Office huddle with the president. The White House says
With the latest major revelation about National Security Agency surveillance, there’s a huge taboo question that needs to be put out on the table: Has President Obama been deliberately lying about the NSA, or have his statements just been repeatedly “wrong”? After Barton Gellman’s blockbuster story today about the NSA breaking “privacy rules or overstepp(ing) its legal authority thousands of times each year,” the Washington Post published an attendant commentary with a headline declaring the president was merely “wrong” in last week suggesting that the NSA wasn’t “actually abusing” its legal authority. The implication is that when Obama made that comment
