Cornell West On Sandy Hook: ‘We Can’t Just Shed Tears For Those On The Vanilla Side Of Town’

| Princeton University Professor Dr. Cornel West appeared on the Tavis Smiley radio show on Thursday where he weighed in with his thoughts on how the media and lawmakers are responding to the tragic massacre of teachers and children in Newtown, Connecticut. West expressed his frustration over how eagerly the media demanded a conversation about gun laws after Newtown, but seems unmoved by endemic gun violence in America’s cities where the victims are primarily minorities. “We can’t just shed tears for those on the vanilla side of town,” West said.” They are precious, but they are no less or more

I agree with Dr. West, although I might have said it a bit more diplomatically. And I would ask Dr. West why he didn´t say anything when the mayor of Chicago, the Rahmster, had nothing to say about the shootings in Chicago except to tell the shooters to stay away from little children as they shot each other...

West actually has a point, of course, but spoils the grain of intelligence he shows by, in effect, calling the victims "vanilla." If people like him would keep race out of the equation people might actually start thinking about the accuracy of what he says, now it´s just more racism.

Every time we try to bring up the gun problem on the ´´chocolate´´ side of town, we are accused of being racists for stating the sad truth that it is black-on-black violence nearly 100% of the time in the biggest problem areas like Chicago and Detroit.
Statistics have shown over and over again that you are most likely to be killed by someone of your own race. But that happens at a much higher percentage of the population among blacks than any other group.
And if someone is killed by someone outside of their race, it is almost always a young black male doing the killing.
Until blacks are willing to let down the wall of racism as an instant defense and actually deal with the problem in their own communities, no gun control or any other method is going to stop the violence in a very large part of this country!!!

I agree with him. Obama doesn´t show up to memorials from the ´hood, does he? Nobody in the control community wants too talk about those strict gun law areas that are rife with gun deaths. Why? Because they are covered by strict laws and they are pretty much a lost cause. And why are they lost? Because the lifestyle that is destroying them is encouraged, exploited and even glorified by the entertainment industry and the Democrat party.

Many of us on the Right have been howling about the lack of news coverage of black-on-black murders in Chicago alone. It´s not Chocolate Town, it´s not Vanilla Town, it´s violence perpetrated by our children against our children!
Why does Professor West assume that no one - Whitey, that is - cares about the hideous realities of murderous violence and crushing unemployment and grinding poverty and fatherless homes that is plaguing our inner cities? Does Professor West also think that no one cares about the financial disaster that the Obama administration has brought to African-Americans, who have been devastated by this endless economic downturn?
Well, I care about these things, and that´s why I can´t help but wonder why so many blacks voted for this guy. Wait until modest earners - black and white - get a lok at their first paychecks of 2013 - just in time for Obama´s second inauguration. Will they suddenly miss W and his "tax cuts for the rich"?

The killing of any child no matter what color is pure evil to me. The drive by shooting of black children is just as despicable to me as what happened in CT.

Shows how over rated Princeton is...this ´prof´ is afraid or thinks it improper to call whites ´white´...I would think that he is over 21...he got this ´flavor´ bit from that racist black mayor in New Orleans who failed miserably as a Mayor and a leader when his citizens really needed his leadership...remember he REFUSED to use the hundreds of school buses to evacuate the citizenry about to be hit with a super hurricane to safety because some of the drivers may not have a license...is this STUPID, or what??? Anyway he asked the fools in New Orleans to re-elect him and KEEP THEIR CITY ´CHOCOLATE´, they re-elected him...unbelievable! Anyhow you meathead prof, why aren´t you insisting on the media and the president being there to help everybody instead of stealing the money for their districts??? Had it been a disaster for a whole lot of blacks the bales of money would still be rolling in...we are NOT blind or dumb!

First sentence of #1 sums it up.
But it is media, not the people, which decides the relative attention paid to Chicago blacks killed and, say, some Seattle whites killed.
The fact is that multiple killings get attention in a way that individual killings will not. If 25 people et shot at a school in Chicago there will be plenty of attention regardless of what color the children are.

WASHINGTON— President Barack Obama supports requiring girls younger than 17 to see a doctor before buying the morning-after pill. But fighting that battle in court comes with its own set of risks. A federal judge in New York on Friday ordered the Food and Drug Administration to lift age restrictions on the sale of emergency contraception, ending the requirement that buyers show proof they’re 17 or older if they want to buy it without a prescription. The ruling accused the Obama administration in no uncertain terms of letting the president’s pending re-election cloud its judgment when it

Projecting madly, the White House on Sunday pushed the notion that Republican intransigence is the reason that Democrats have been unable to pass a budget during President Obama’s tenure. “Right now,” said senior White House advisor Dan Pfeiffer on Fox News Sunday, “the approach of many Republicans, particularly the leadership in the House, is my way or the highway.” This is certainly rich coming from an administration that has failed to garner a single “yes” vote on its budget proposals for the past several years, even from members of its own party. WASHINGTON — President Obama went out for a round of golf Saturday afternoon, his second weekend in a row to hit the links at a course at Joint Base Andrews. The president golfed with White House aides Marvin Nicholson, Joe Paulsen, and Michael Brush. Last Saturday, the president played golf at the same course with Nicholson, Brush, and friend and Chicago businessman Marty Nesbitt. The outing marked his first time on the golf course since the sequester cuts went into place on March 1. The president also took in the Syracuse-Marquette NCAA tournament basketball game

No doubt there are parents who have frank, frequent, open and easy discussions with their teens about sex. I’ve never met any. I do know parents, however, who were stunned to find their 15-year-old’s birth control pills in her pocketbook. Or who came home early to discover junior and a girl they’d never met frantically buttoning up. Or who found out — when their children were grown — what really went on when Meghan said she was sleeping over at Ashley’s. Such sobering tales of teens snookering mom and dad caused mixed emotions in me — a solidly pro-choice

Last fall, Ginnette Powell traveled from her home in Boston´s Dorchester section to her old middle school in South Boston - a journey of just two miles, but one that covered a huge emotional distance. Finally, she was able to leave the painful past behind. Powell endured the explosive battle over desegregation in Boston in the 1970s. A few years after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Lindalyn Adams was escorting visitors on a bus traveling down Elm Street near Dealey Plaza. “I was pointing out the John Neely Bryan cabin and the Old Red Courthouse, and suddenly I realized the whole bus was leaning towards the right as we were going close to the Texas School Book Depository, and the women [were] pointing and saying, “Is that? Is that? Is that?’” Adams recalled during an oral history interview. She knew, of course, what “that” meant. “That” was where Kennedy had been shot.

The night began like many at Boorda Hall, a five-story barracks at Naval Station Great Lakes, the Navy´s premier training base on the shore of Lake Michigan in Illinois. Somebody announced a party, and the hard drinking and beer pong began. A 21-year-old Marine lance corporal, so drunk on rum and Mountain Dew she was slurring her words, went to look for Kyle Antonacci, a Navy seaman she´d been dating off and on. Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”
