The Newtown, Connecticut massacre of children has changed the gun control debate to an extent no other event has in decades. One of the reasons it has had such an effect is that it came at the time when liberals are at the height of their power and conservatives — and Republicans — are at their lowest ebb. It also came at a time when the maneuvers between House Speaker John Boehner and President Obama over solving the “fiscal cliff” crisis fell apart, leaving Boehner severely weakened. The Newtown children hadn’t even been buried
Each time I read an article that claims the mentally ill are the problem, I get angry. They are NOT the problem -- liberals who want to invalidate the 2nd amendment are the problem. Mass murders, few as they are, are not always committed by the mentally ill. Some perpetrators are just evil or angry or both, not necessarily mentally ill.
But there is this:
What the Republicans should do — and, of course, aren’t doing — is to form their own gun violence task force. With five or six members drawn from the House and an equal number from the Senate, they could come up with an anti-violence agenda that would actually deal with the problem.
It´s a great idea but the writer goes on to suggest everything except the statistics showing that where gun control laws are most stringent, gun crimes are highest -- and vice-versa.
The laws now on the books are perfectly valid and are not being enforced. Mental illness is a red herring. Let´s go after those who want to further shred the Constitution.
The Left claims they only want to address "assault" weapons. That´s a lie. They want all weapons out of the hands of people who could defend themselves against personal attacks, home attacks or attacks from the dictatorial government that Obama is trying to form.
Recall how Zero and his gang rammed through Obamacare without one assenting vote from the Republicans. This is how he will operate during his second term. Our advice? Cling to your guns and your religion!
In a free society, crime will exist. Passing more restrictive laws won’t stop it. There is evil in this world and it shows itself daily and occasionally, shows itself in some horrendous act that shakes us to our core. If anything, the heart of each and every individual must change for the better.
This horrendous act was carried out in the mind of the individual before he ever grabbed his mother´s guns. We ask why? What makes a young man feel nothing for innocent children? Did he feel some perverted form of satisfaction or pleasure or feel he got even by killing? How can we stop it in the future?
That will not be answered by a society that promotes a culture of death, conditioned by news and entertainment that shows us violence, blood and death on a daily basis. We are shocked at the massacre of school children while supporting the rights of women to kill their unborn children. Time starved parents do what they want as their children are entertained by the most violent video games that demean and violate the sanctity of life and action movies that show us so much blood, humans are treated no better than an insect, continually lowering our standards of sensibility and what´s acceptable.
People have grown apathetic about what they allow to come into their homes, until something like this happens. Then we start pointing fingers and blaming others and try to pass laws on inanimate objects which won´t change a thing.
Evil can only be stopped when hearts are changed, when we as a nation adopt the unwritten laws of respect, love, care, compassion, mercy and grace toward others; and as a nation, we start feeling true empathy and the emotion of shame and guilt return to our hearts.
What we have here smack dap in the middle of this debate are the US mental health industry that is a liberal Democrat constituency, and the US small arms industry that is a conservative Republican constituency.
By the government putting a lot more money into the mental health industry, that industry will be able to become more powerful and will add a lot more jobs without ever taking dangerous mentally ill people off the street. Remember the liberals consider mentally ill people, including dangerous mentally ill people to be disabled people who need government help.
By the government banning just about all semi-automatic firearms that could possible hold a clip or magazine containing more then 10 rounds of ammunition, the government would in effect be banning just about all modern defensive firearms being produced in the USA today. Such a ban would put most of the US small arms industry out of business, as it could not survive on bidding for diminishing military contracts alone. That would result in the loss of many thousands of well paying American jobs.
That´s the real politics involved here.
No matter what the politicians decide to do, you can bet that it will be ineffective, and that dangerous crazy people will still be out there with the tools that they need to murder a lot of people.
So the paranoid hippie pot dealer you knew in college was right all along: The feds really were after him. In the latest post-Snowden bombshell about the extent and consequences of government spying, we learned from Reuters reporters this week that a secret branch of the DEA called the Special Operations Division – so secret that nearly everything about it is classified, including the size of its budget and the location of its office — has been using the immense pools of data collected by the NSA, CIA, FBI and other intelligence agencies
On their current trip to Cairo, Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), two of President Barack Obama’s most persistent critics on everything in foreign policy from Syria to Benghazi, have found common cause with him at last. All three fear that the anti-American (and generally anti-human) Muslim Brotherhood (MB), whom they mistakenly see as “moderate,” will disappear from the halls of power in Egypt, our most important Arab ally. They also evidently worry that the MB’s leading figures, such as now-deposed (and arrested) President Mohamed Morsi—who had awarded himself powers greater than any previous ruler
China´s latest plan to link the mainland to Taiwan, either by bridge or via a tunnel that would be triple the size of the one under the English Channel, is sure to heighten long-simmering tensions between the two countries. China, which has always claimed dominion over Taiwan, recently approved a State Council plan for a highway that would connect Beijing to Taipei, which would stretch 1,200 miles, including a 111-mile span over or under the straits that separate the nations. Such a project has been discussed for at least a decade, but was recently approved
New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez may be the most hated figure in sports, but he is a man for our time. He is a master at the insincere mea culpa, at self-involvement, at pretense and greed. Not just greed for money, but for fame and glory. If he had only disgraced himself playing for the Texas Rangers, that would be one thing, but he has done it playing for the most storied franchise in sports, whose legends are synonymous with baseball greatness. So let’s consider the tale of two prodigiously talented Yankee corner infielders, separated by about 80 years
For a glimpse at the secret, special-favors factory that Washington has become under President Obama, check out this week´s big news out of the Environmental Protection Agency. Or rather, look beyond the headlines to the corporate handout hidden within. The big news was that the EPA issued—finally—its infamous annual quota for renewable fuels. That mandate tells the nation´s refineries how much renewable fuel (ethanol) must be blended annually into gasoline, a quota that is becoming a pernicious driver of gas prices. The EPA was supposed to release the 2013 quota last November but decided to leave the industry
As we advance toward the much anticipated rollout of Obamacare on October 1, the true horror of what Congress and the president have wrought is beginning to sink in. There is a growing nervousness that the state insurance exchanges not only won’t be ready, but may harbor a dangerous vulnerability that would allow hackers access to the personal information of consumers who sign up for insurance via the sites. There is also a growing number of Democrats who are advocating a repeal of one of Obamacare’s major pieces: the Independent Payment Advisory Board, which will arbitrarily rule
WASHINGTON — The gloating among jihadists and their sympathizers began last week, right after the United States shut down almost two dozen diplomatic posts across the Middle East in response to a terrorist threat. “God is great! America is in a condition of terror and fear from Al Qaeda,” wrote one jihadist in an online forum. Another one rejoiced: “The mobilization and security precautions are costing them billions of dollars. We hope to hear more of such psychological warfare, even if there are no actual jihadi operations on the ground.” The jihadists are not the only ones
On Tuesday, Barack Obama insisted that the US government isn’t spying on Americans by surveilling the contents of their communications. Less than two days later, the New York Times makes hash of that claim. The NSA, reports Charlie Savage, sifts through the content of “vast amounts” of electronic communications between Americans and people abroad in their search for links to terrorism, and not just the metadata: The National Security Agency is searching the contents of vast amounts of Americans’ e-mail and text communications into and out of the country, hunting for people who mention information about foreigners
In an interview with Time magazine, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, explained that he respected President Obama and even modeled his own campaign for senate after his presidential campaign. “I think Barack Obama is an extraordinary politician,” Cruz said. “And I respect Barack Obama a great deal. I think he is committed to his principles, which is rare in politics.” Cruz also pointed out that Obama’s principles were “profoundly dangerous.” “I respect that he believes, I think genuinely, with all of his heart, that government control of economy and redistribution of wealth betters the world,” Cruz added.
knowing full well they never will. Pfc. Bradley Manning faces up to 136 years (reduced to 90 years max) in prison after recently being found guilty of charges of espionage and theft for his role in providing classified information to Wikileaks. Progressive organizations have been circulating a petition to allow Manning’s supporters to take turns serving part of his prison time in his place.(Snip for graphic)I’m fairly certain that in the United States it is not legal for a person to serve the prison time of another individual convicted of a crime.
Former presidential candidate Ron Paul’s campaign negotiated to purchase the endorsement of an Iowa state senator who had previously endorsed Rep. Michelle Bachmann, R-Minn., according to emails obtained by Opensecrets.org. “In an Oct. 29, 2011 email, a representative of Iowa state Sen. Kent Sorenson, a Republican, asks the Paul campaign to provide Sorenson with $8,000 per month in salary for him, $5,000 per month in salary for a Sorenson ally, as well as $100,000 in contributions for a newly created PAC that Sorenson planned to use to support conservative candidates for Iowa state office,” Opensecrets.org explained.
Imagine you have hundreds of millions of dollars in disposable income. (Congratulations!) You’re looking to find a safe place to keep it, and maybe earn a decent yield. Along comes a prospectus for a new product, to invest in the MBS Ice Cream Corporation. It comes from the same people who pitched you on MBS Ice Cream a few years ago, only they lied to you about the quality of their rancid ice cream, did nothing as the company imploded, and paid you back just pennies on the dollar when you sued them.
The owner of a shop in Zurich where US talk show host Oprah Winfrey says she encountered racism has called the incident a "misunderstanding". Winfrey, one of the world´s richest women, claimed an assistant refused to serve her in an upmarket handbag shop. She was apparently told one of the bags on display was "too expensive" for her. Shop owner Trudie Gotz told the BBC that Winfrey was "absolutely allowed" to look at the $35,000 (£22,500) bag, which was kept behind a screen. "My salesperson wanted to give her the handbag in her hand. But she didn´t want
Nobody tells Oprah she can´t afford a handbag. Oprah Winfrey is one of the richest entertainers in the world, thanks to her willdly successful 25-season run on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and her latest media foray with the newly revitalized Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). The entertainer earned an estimated $77 million from June 2012 to June 2013 alone, according to Forbes, but she says she still experiences racism because she is African American. Take this latest incident in Switzerland, where "The Butler" star went to attend the nuptials of good friend and singer Tina Turner last month.
While media mogul Oprah Winfrey has been promoting her new film, “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” she revealed she was a recent victim of profiling while shopping in a store in Zurich.(Snip)“I was in Zurich the other day at a store, whose name I will not mention,” Winfrey said on “Entertainment Tonight,” “and I didn’t have my eyelashes on, but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear…but obviously, ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ is not shown in Zurich. So this doesn’t happen to me unless somebody obviously doesn’t know that it’s me.” Winfrey went on to explain that she was in Zurich for Tina Turner’s wedding,
At a White House press conference Friday afternoon, President Obama said that health insurance plans offered under Obamacare will be "significantly cheaper" than plans currently on the market, but a string of recent reports say that isn´t true. "What happens on October 1, in 53 days, is for the remaining 15 percent of the population that doesn´t have health insurance, they´re going to be able to go on a website or call up a call center and sign up for affordable, quality health insurance at a significantly cheaper rate than what they can get right now on
The Washington Post is a legend in the minds of the Washington elite, so its financial decline has caused quiet panic. As NPR media reporter David Folkenflik put it, “You think of stories like the Pentagon Papers, Watergate, these are all stories where The Washington Post led the nation’s understanding, the world’s understanding of some major issues.” Outside the liberal media, you wonder how long Post fans can wallow in their Nixon-crumbling polyester “glory days” in the early 1970s. But nostalgia ruled as the Graham family sold the Post to Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon.com.
The Clintons have decided to rent a different house in the Hamptons this summer after they only received a small portion of their security deposit back from the home they rented last year. The famous Democrats have been frequent visitors to the expensive summer getaway in Long Island, and rented the same beachfront house in 2011 and 2012. [Snip] When it comes to rentals in the Hamptons, many owners use the security deposits as a way to pay for the utility fees like heat and grounds-keeping charges. It should be little surprise then that the Lily Pond Lane home
Eydie Gorme, a popular nightclub and television singer as a solo act and as a team with her husband, Steve Lawrence, has died. She was 84. Gorme, who also had a huge solo hit in 1963 with "Blame it on the Bossa Nova," died Saturday at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas following a brief, undisclosed illness, said her publicist, Howard Bragman. Gorme was a successful band singer and nightclub entertainer when she was invited to join the cast of Steve Allen´s local New York television show in 1953. She sang solos and also did duets and comedy skits with Lawrence, a rising young singer who had joined
Forty to 50 House Republicans will support immigration reform, Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) predicted Thursday. Gutiérrez said many of the Republicans supportive of immigration reform don’t want to be identified, but he insisted they would support comprehensive immigration reform. “If they ask me today, go find those 40 to 50 Republicans, I’ll tell them I found them. I know where they’re at,” Gutiérrez said in an interview with Ed O’Keefe at The Washington Post.
President Barack Obama announced Friday afternoon that the White House will publicly release a summary of the legal authorities through which the National Security Agency conducts its controversial surveillance programs. ´Given the history of abuse by governments,´ he said, it is important to explain how such a program is managed, and - equally important - what it may not do. He described his working relationship with Vladimir Putin as ´candid´ and ´blunt,´ and seemed to dismiss concerns that the Russian president´s body language indicated a lack of willingness to work with the United States.
EDGARTOWN, Mass. — President Barack Obama opened the first summer vacation of his second term Saturday on Martha’s Vineyard, trading Washington debates over the budget, government surveillance and his health care overhaul for a hoped-for carefree week filled with golf, beach outings and hanging-out time with family and friends. (Snip) As Air Force One flew north, Obama got into a vacation mindset by trading his suit and tie for more suitable attire: khakis and a blue shirt with rolled-up sleeves. First lady Michelle Obama, who introduced him at the convention, kept her yellow-and-white
Middle and high school students in San Diego, California will be encouraged to vent their frustration that the world lacks justice when they return to school and participate in the “Trayvon Martin dialogues” this fall. The board of San Diego Unified Schools unanimously approved a proposal recently to establish classroom forums to discuss the death of Trayvon Martin, a black teenager who was shot during an altercation with a Hispanic man, George Zimmerman, in Florida last year. A jury recently acquitted Zimmerman, who claimed that Martin struck first and shot him in self-defense.
OHIO: Muslims across the US celebrated Eid on the same day to everyone’s joy and relief. Mosques overflowed with happy worshippers who stood as one ummah in prayer and thanksgiving, enjoying the mild weather, treats and spiritually motivating sermons of the day. US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle also sent their warmest greetings to Muslims celebrating Eid Al-Fitr around the world, calling it "part of a great tapestry of America´s many traditions."
