It´s the 21st: No doomsday yet,
Mayan calendar aside

CBS News, by Staff

In the darkness before dawn Friday, spiritualists prepared white clothes, drums, conch shells and incense ahead of the sunrise they believe will herald the birth of a new and better age as a vast, 5,125-year cycle in the Mayan calendar comes to an end. No one was quite sure at what time the Mayas´ 13th Baktun would officially end on this Dec. 21. Some think it already ended at midnight Thursday. Others looked to Friday´s dawn here in the Maya heartland. Some had later times in mind.

So far, so good here in the Eastern USA time zone. The Aussies in our family had already let us know that it was a nothingburger.

The Mayans were obviously referring to the reelection of Barack Obama in 2012. In predicting catastrophes, they were amazingly accurate.

With so many time zones and the added confusion of the International Dateline, how is anyone supposed pinpoint doomsday? I guess if we wake up tomorrow, we´re in the clear?

There was an obvious mistake in the first sentence, so I fixed it:

An appeals court has vacated the murder conviction of Ryan Ferguson, the 29-year-old Mo. man imprisoned for nearly a decade for a crime he says he didn´t commit. It is not clear whether the state will seek to re-try him. "48 Hours" has covered the case extensively since Ferguson´s 2005 trial and conviction. Ferguson was sentenced to 40 years in the 2001 murder of sports editor Kent Heitholt. The circumstances surrounding Ferguson´s conviction have troubled legal experts. The case was upheld last year despite a lack of physical evidence pointing to Ferguson, and the recantations of both Ferguson´s alleged accomplice and

The U.S. Department of Justice has offered major news organizations a chance to sit down with Eric Holder, the embattled attorney general, for a briefing a Q-and-A session about his agency´s intrusive surveillance of reporters, but there is one catch: The entire session must be ´off the record,´ meaning reporters couldn´t write anything at all about it. Most of the media outlets invited to the meeting have announced that they´re boycotting it, including the Associated Press and Fox News - the two whose phone records and emails were secretly seized as part of DOJ investigations into national security leaks.

Americans named President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as the world´s most admired living man and woman in 2013, according to a Gallup poll released on Monday. Obama topped the annual list for the sixth consecutive year, a typical ranking for a sitting U.S. president, the polling organization said. But the percentage of those surveyed who choose him as the most admired man fell to 16 percent this year, down from 30 percent in 2012. The president´s job approval rating has dropped during a year marked by a botched healthcare rollout and stalled legislative initiatives at the start of

It was the 2013 Politifact "Lie of the Year," our president´s now infamous line: "If you like your health care plan, you can keep it." Now all Americans are realizing what Catholics have known from the beginning: President Barack Obama is a master of deception. Lest people forget, passage of the Affordable Care Act happened in part because Obama struck a deal with a single Catholic holdout: Bart Stupak, D-Michigan. Stupak agreed to vote for the bill in exchange for an executive order protecting conscience rights and preserving the Hyde Amendment´s ban on the use of federal funds for abortion.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) says people shouldn´t underestimate President Obama as he heads into his sixth year in the White House. He discounted Obama´s low approval ratings and said a sitting president always has influence. "We all wear thin with the American people after a while," McCain told the Associated Press. "To count a man of that talent out at this point in time in his administration would be a huge mistake," he added. McCain has had his up-and-downs in his relationship with Obama, his foe during the 2008 presidential campaign. He met with Obama this year to discuss immigration reform, but was a vocal

One-third of Americans reject the idea of evolution and Republicans have grown more skeptical about it, according to a poll released on Monday. Sixty percent of Americans say that "humans and other living things have evolved over time," the telephone survey by the Pew Research Center´s Religion and Public Life Project showed. But 33 percent reject the idea of evolution, saying that "humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time," Pew said in a statement. Although this percentage remained steady since 2009, the last time Pew asked the question, there was a

MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry apologized Tuesday for openly mocking Mitt Romney´s black adopted grandson, after Sarah Palin led the chorus of conservatives who criticized the cable news host. The Romney family Christmas card was among the items featured in the "2013: The year in political ridiculousness" segment on the cable news show Sunday. In the photo, the former Republican presidential candidate and his wife Ann, who are both white, sit in the center of their 22 grandchildren. Nestled on Mitt´s knee is one toddler grandson and on his other knee he holds baby Kieran James, the adopted infant son of

MSNBC’s mocking of the adopted African-American baby in Governor Romney’s family was outrageous, offensive and over-the-line. An after-the-fact apology from host Melissa Harris-Perry two days later is not enough. MSNBC network executives need to personally apologize to Governor Romney and his family. Disciplinary action also must be taken against the offending parties, just as it would if the roles were reversed and a conservative had said something similar on a different network. Perhaps most alarming about this entire incident is the fact that the offending segment happened on Sunday afternoon and went unnoticed until a blogger flagged it Monday morning.

KAILUA, Hawaii — When they vacationed here just before President Obama’s first inauguration, Malia and Sasha were little girls doting on their dad — holding his hand on the beach, taking in a dolphin show and nuzzling up to him at the shave-ice shop. Now, five Christmases later, the presidential daughters are both nearly as tall as their very tall mother, each developing her own style and leading an increasingly independent life. Although they have watched a basketball game, gone for a hike and hit the beach with their dad, he has spent most afternoons here on the golf course

Central Park’s horse-drawn carriages will soon be a thing of the past (even more so) under the de Blasio administration. The incoming New York City mayor has already announced he will begin phasing out the nostalgic rides and ban them when he takes office, which starts tomorrow. “It’s over,” de Blasio said, calling the practice inhumane. ”We are going to quickly and aggressively move to make horse carriages no longer a part of the landscape in New York City.” Supporters of de Blasio’s efforts, such as an official with ASPCA’s Anti-Cruelty group, described the horse-drawn carriages as ”unnatural, unnecessary, and an undeniable
