FTC expands kids online
privacy rules [video chat]

Los Angeles Times, by Pat Benson

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 12/19/2012 9:26:04 PM

Technology has changed a lot in 15 years. It´s been nearly that long since the Federal Trade Commission has updated rules protecting kids’ online privacy. The Federal Trade Commission said Wednesday that it has given parents greater control over the information that online services collect from kids 12 and under. Read Jessica Guynn´s story on the issue here. Among the changes to the 1998 Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act: The FTC updated rules for mobile apps and made it clear that a child’s location, photographs and videos cannot be collected without a parent’s permission.

Comments:
I´d say 18 and under and would settle maybe for 16. Parents really need to pay attention, especially if Facebook and the like say they own the copyrights to pictures on their website. This more than just a Government trying to "protect" its peeps.

Cairo - Egyptian presidential advisor Mustafa Hegazy described them as remnants of “religious fascism” that once governed the nation. The police called them infidels as they cleared a mosque Saturday where they were either hiding or shooting, depending on which side you listened to. Newscasters referred to them as armed gunmen. And on the streets of Cairo, in front of the latest clashes, nearby residents used the terms animals, barbarians, and terrorists to describe supporters of ousted Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi. Iraq Violence: Baghdad Asks For US Help

Iraq has asked the United States for new help to fight extremists in the country less than two years after it forced American troops to withdraw. The request follows a resurgence of violence across Iraq and a renewed threat from al Qaeda extremists. The White House has largely turned its attention away from Iraq since US forces left in 2011. But the country has recently been hit with deadly bombings at a rate reminiscent of Iraq´s darkest days, stoking new fears of a civil war. More than 1,000 Iraqis were killed in terror-related attacks in July, the deadliest month since

Washington - Federal agents have launched a criminal investigation of instructors who claim they can teach job applicants how to pass lie detector tests as part of the Obama administration’s unprecedented crackdown on security violators and leakers. The criminal inquiry, which hasn’t been acknowledged publicly, is aimed at discouraging criminals and spies from infiltrating the U.S. government by using the polygraph-beating techniques, which are said to include controlled breathing, muscle tensing, tongue biting and mental arithmetic. So far, authorities have targeted at least two instructors,

Los Angeles - A Los Angeles County law requiring adult film performers to wear condoms is constitutional, a federal judge has ruled. The decision is a setback to porn producers who filed a lawsuit to block the implementation of the Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act, or Measure B, which was approved by voters last November. It was sponsored by five individuals affiliated with the nonprofit AIDS Healthcare Foundation. In the ruling Friday, U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson wrote that supporters presented sufficient evidence of the health risks the measure seeks to reduce.

From his first presidential campaign to the present, the president, his party and his administration have openly flouted existing laws, and it doesn´t seem there is any legal means of stopping him short of impeachment. As you may recall, the Democrats refused to fill vacant spots on the Federal Election Commission so that when the Obama campaign disabled the system to track contributions there was no way in 2008 to challenge and stop the practice and countless suspicious contributions, including many from overseas, found their way into his coffers.

An Oklahoma federal judge struck down a state constitutional amendment that forbade its courts from considering Islamic law in judicial decisions. The constitutional amendment — approved by more than 70% of Oklahoma voters in 2010 — was part of a broader national push led by a handful of organizations that claim Islamic Sharia law is creeping into courtrooms. WSJ wrote about the anti-Sharia movement last year. Because the proposed amendment discriminated among religions, Oklahoma needed to show a compelling state interest to justify it, U.S. District Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange in Oklahoma City wrote in her decision. The decision, made on Thursday, largely mirrors

A year and a half ago, a news story exploded out of Sanford, Fla. George Zimmerman, an armed, 28-year-old man of mixed white and Hispanic ancestry, followed and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old African American. The tragic episode was touched off because Zimmerman, out on neighborhood watch patrol, found Martin to be suspicious as he walked home from a store wearing a sweat shirt with a hood. Washington — Clinton nostalgia is being replaced by Clinton neuralgia. Why is it that America’s roil family always seems better in abstract than in concrete? The closer it gets to running the world once more, the more you are reminded of all the things that bugged you the last time around. WASHINGTON -- New revelations from leaker Edward Snowden that the National Security Agency has overstepped its authority thousands of times since 2008 are stirring renewed calls on Capitol Hill for serious changes to NSA spy programs, undermining White House hopes that President Barack Obama had quieted the controversy with his assurances of oversight. An internal audit provided by Snowden to The Washington Post shows the agency has repeatedly broken privacy rules or exceeded its legal authority every year since Congress granted it broad new powers in 2008.
