Seconds after University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman banged the gavel to start Thursday´s Board of Regents meeting, the first student stood up. Freshman Daniel Morales took off his shirt to unveil a yellow T-shirt underneath. He took a piece of red tape and put it across his mouth. (Snip) About 100 students followed suit, one at a time, sitting quietly on the floor as part of a protest calling for U-M to offer in-state tuition to those students who went to high school in Michigan, but are undocumented residents. Snip added by staff.
|
Comments: Well, I´d pass this but with the caveat that the difference in tuition bills be added to people who volunteer to ask the university to allow this. hahaha. Seriously: if this is a topic of discussion the U must have figured that the ability to admit more, ahem, diversified students is outweighed by the costs.

Raise the tuition on all these students enough so that what they have to pay equals what the aliens would have had to pay. That should shut them up quickly.

Illegal aliens. We can´t afford them anymore, sorry. Go study in your own country. This madness has got to stop.

Smarmy punks are lazy. Why don´t they tutor kids - citizen or otherwise - rather than encourage lawbreaking and more handouts to the undeserving?

Sorry #1, but I´ll bet that 99% of the students are NOT paying their own tuition.
They are getting their education paid for by; parent(s), 529 plans, which other people contributed to, or student loans, (which we´ll all pay for eventually)!!!

And a kid from Illinois gets to pay out of state tuition?
One rate for all.
Or everybody not a citizen of the state pays the out of state rate.
No exceptions.

I have posted that the mindless drivel of diversity for its own sake is, well, mindless, when applied to african americans. Diversity with foreign students in class really is a positive. One of my best classes ever was a human resources seminar, back about 15 years ago, and three muslims were enrolled. One man was from Indonesia, one man from Turkey, and a woman from Palestine. When we reached that part of the course for the examination of civil rights laws applied to employment, each of them made a significant contribution...

How many states offer in-state tuition to illegals?
So a kid born in the United States who wants to go to a state school in another state, pays out-of-state tuition. But a kid who has no legal right to be in this country gets to go there at the reduced rate of an in-state student, courtesy of the taxpayers.
Disgusting.

When you allow them to set the language you surrender the argument. These are not "undocumented" students. They clearly are "documented" if they are enrolled. They are ILLEGAL ALIENS. Any time you write a letter to editor, use the correct terminology and don´t let them set the terms of debate, or you have already surrendered.

I live in this insane asylum, what goes on here politically is mind boggling. For a city that has as many advanced degree holding citizens, I say most of them are dumber than a box of hammers and I´m probably guilty of slighting the hammers and the box.

It´s hard to feel right about punishing a kid for the transgression of his/her parents. But to give the in-state tuition would reward the parents and encourage further illegal residency. So either choice entails an injustice. I hate those dilemmas.

Sorry, #10, but what you described is truly diverse. The universities are only interested in dermatological diversity.
They want everyone to arrive mostly indoctrinated and can´t stand independent thought otherwise they´d welcome religious people, conservatives and thinkers along with the usual suspects.
I should be able to write an entrance essay that says "I´m white, conservative and (x) denomination regular church goes" and have them clamoring to enroll me... but that isn´t the way it is.

Hostility has been mounting this week in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, after two plainclothes police officers fatally shot 16-year-old Kimani Gray after he allegedly pointed a revolver at them on Saturday night. On Monday a group of about 130 people were marching toward the 67th Police Precinct station when about two dozen young protesters splintered off — drawing riot police — and trashed a Rite Aid. Tuesday the crowd was mostly calm, but on Wednesday — the same day Gray´s autopsy showed he had been shot seven times ...

Post Thanksgiving ruminations and ruinations ... Question: When is it better to earn $29,000 than to earn $69,000? Answer: When you’re a single mom living in Pennsylvania. Why? Because, thanks to our generous welfare system, a single mom makes out better that way. When all the benefits are added up, the lower-paid single mom qualifies to receive $57,327 in net income and benefits, while the mom who earns $69,000 ends up with a net income and benefits of $57,045.

Television censors labor to strip away naughty bits from your favorite television shows. Do they also exist to protect President Obama's reelection chances? The fall premiere of ABC's "Last Man Standing" sitcom starring Tim Allen felt the censor's sting, and the censoring had nothing to do with George Carlin's infamous seven dirty words. On Last Man Standing’s Season 2 premiere, set to air November 2...

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Decrying the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as way too complex, he warned the acting Medicare director that Obamacare is "so complicated and if it isn´t done right the first time, it will just simply get worse."

The withdrawal came less than a week after medical school Dean Paul B. The sequester may have many across the country singing the blues, but for President Obama, it was all about Memphis Soul. Even with the threat of furloughs and government cuts sparked by the sequester, Obama took the time to enjoy a star-studded concert at the White House tonight. The White House celebration of Memphis Soul music in the East Room--which included special guest appearances by Queen Latifah and Justin Timberlake--is likely to rile Obama´s Republican foes. Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf, especially since popular public tours of the White House have been canceled because of

In the message he issued along with his budget proposal on Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama said he wants to see 4-year-old children in the United States enrolled in public schools. Obama said America needs to start enrolling 4-year-olds to make sure the children are “better prepared for the demands of the global economy” and to help parents save on "child-care costs." After saying the United States needs to “equip our citizens with the skills and training” to fill jobs in manufacturing, energy and infrastructure, Obama said, “And that has to start at the earliest possible age.”

Although the first votes on gun -control legislation have yet to be cast, by some measures the National Rifle Association has already won. Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million.

Seven hundred Military Special Operations professionals. And one insistent and very angry Mom. This is becoming a deadly combination for the political game players in the Obama Administration. Sean Smith, the young State Department computer wizard who was brutally murdered that September night in Benghazi, was Pat Smith’s only child. Let’s say that again. Sean Smith was Mrs. Smith’s only child. To listen to her recent radio interview with another Sean… Sean Hannity… is to have the heart break.
