| “There will be blood,” State Representative Douglas Geiss threatened from the floor of the Michigan House of Representatives today as the body debated legislation that would make Michigan the nation’s 24th right to work state. “I really wish we had not gone here,” Geiss continued. “It is the leadership in this house that has led us here. The same leadership that tried to throw a bomb right on election day, leading to a member switching parties, and came in at the 11th hour with a gotcha bill. For that, I do not see solace,

Michigan has both the highest unionization and unemployment rates in the Midwest.
A correlation perhaps? Unions, like bad governments, exist only to perpetuate themselves and the lifestyles of the ´leadership´. Anybody who thinks unions are doing them any favors is kidding themselves. Ask why so many jobs are outsourced. Union leaderships and this administration should all be imprisoned indefinitely.

#19, you must have missed my lecture on the subject yesterday. A union shop clause in a collective bargaining agreement requires, as a condition of continuing employment, the employee to pay union dues. The employee does not have to join the union. What Michigan is doing is exercising their 14(B) right under the Taft Hartley act, which allows a state to make union shop clauses in collective bargaining agreements legally unenforceable. And the teacher sickout has nothing to do, directly, with the 14(b) issue, since the taft hartley act does not apply to state and local employee unions. (there are teeny tiny aspects of Taft Hartley that do apply to state and local unions, but that subject is too arcane to discuss here.)

And we can reduce our deficit, stabilize our debt, and do so without sacrificing the kinds of investments that are going to be required to grow. During his remarks, the president spoke of the

One of the first political issues negotiators must tackle in crafting an immigration reform bill is among the most important: what to name it. It’s a decision that will bruise egos, create legacies and deeply affect subsequent messaging battles. “Every time the bill is mentioned in the press, you either have a brand that´s positive or a brand that doesn´t mean anything or even hurts you,” said Frank Sharry, the executive director of the pro-immigration reform group America’s Voice. The wrong name, he warned, could doom a good bill. “If there´s not a

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors.
