Australia police discourage use
of Apple maps app after rescues

CNET News, by Steven Musil

Apple recognized a few months ago that its iOS map app was so inefficient that it encouraged use of competing apps. Now police in Australia are suggesting that such a move might save the lives of motorists Down Under. Police in Victoria, Australia, issued a warning Monday discouraging iPhone users from relying on Apple´s map app after rescuing several people who became stranded in recent weeks in the wilderness following the app´s directions

Comments:
Blind adherance to the ´latest and greatest´ with tragic results.

Looks like Apple picked their map app(le) a little green.

shouldn´t take rescuers 24 hours to find them.

just use the same app and destination and they will be lead right to the lost folks.

And this is why I still have paper maps and also familiarize myself with where I´m going before I get in the car. GPS seems to be an efficient sheep training system.

I´ve been using a Garmin device in my truck for years and it is dead on the money every time.

Since getting the iPhone5 I´ve used it´s maps for guidance 4 or 5 times and it has been wrong every single time, sometimes a 1/4 mile or more off the mark.

Apple, instead of encouraging us to use other maps should just fix the one they have and be embarrassed at the map they´ve offered.

I have 2 or 3 different map apps all which work very good and blow apple´s app out of the water. some even have turn by turn voice for free.... As the previous poster pointed out, get a paper map and familiarize yourself and don´t blindly follow a GPS. Looking at a map and knowing traffic patterns you can save yourself time and headaches by using a different route than the suggested one. Just saying

When I updated the iOS on my iPad, it replaced my Google Maps with Apple´s Maps. Apple has acknowledged that it´s not up to snuff, but they decided for me anyway. I love my Apple devices, but I hate it when they do stuff like this.

#4 -- how about we choose which app we want to use, leaving Apple out of the decision? If they can fix it, fine -- fix it. In the meantime, and until their own offering is much improved, I´d rather not even have it on my device. I want the Google Maps app back.

"Technology made me drive into a lake!" (paraphrase from The Office)

Anyone who hasn´t been sent to a dead end and told to turn right or left by a GPS hasn´t really used them much.

After the EMP we´ll all be digging out our paper maps anyway.

Apple should have fixed this problem already.

President Barack Obama offered on Saturday to provide any assistance the Algerian government needs after a deadly hostage siege at a desert gas plant and said the United States was seeking a "fuller understanding" from Algerian authorities of what took place there. "The thoughts and prayers of the American people are with the families of all those who were killed and injured in the terrorist attack in Algeria," Obama said in his first comments on the hostage crisis.

Boehner´s tactics

Conservative congressmen don´t question House Speaker John Boehner´s dedication to the cause. But as chaos overtakes GOP efforts to prevent a Jan. 1 tax hike, members do have doubts about his effectiveness. Here´s the latest turn of events: Over the summer, House Republicans passed a bill extending the Bush-era tax rates, which are set to expire, resulting in higher rates Jan. 1. That was Boehner´s Plan A. Senate Democrats said no, and so Boehner rolled out Plan B: extend current rates for all income below $1 million, and rein in Social Security spending.

Both Speaker John Boehner and media analysts have been spun into a state of confusion by the fiscal cliff issue and President Obama´s reelection. The fiscal cliff exists because the president and the GOP Congress could not decide in 2011 on a permanent general policy toward the budget. And now the president has added another factor: he is determined to usurp the Congressional authority to raise the debt ceiling. If the budget goes over the cliff, two things will happen: tax rates on everyone will rise, and across the board spending cuts will be made.

Earlier this year, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) decided to disinvite two predominantly white high school choral groups from performance in the ASO´s holiday concert. The ASO´s decision was reportedly motivated by the high schools´ lack of diversity, which caused a stir among people who believe in racial justice as opposed to racial favoritism.

Only one of my six children has left New York for economic reasons but the strain of living in this expensive nanny state is weighing heavy on my other five and their families. As a native New Yorker, I´ve seen its middle class population decline over the years due to its neglect of blue collar families which is ironic since this is a Democrat city. With the recent arrests of several local politicians for corruption perhaps New Yorkers will pay more attention to those they put in office. Given their past indifference in local elections this is highly unlikely.

Please, shut up this clown. These days, the genitally obsessed Weiner has nothing much to do, except sit in his lavish Manhattan apartment and — the inhumanity! — change the poopy diapers of his 16-month-old son, Jordan. Worse, Weiner is living under a kind of house arrest, sentenced to take extreme grief
