Morsi Under Siege: Will
His Concession Calm Egypt?

Time, by Asraf Khalil

Original Article

With a late Saturday night concession, President Mohamed Morsi tried to contain the largest sustained public uprising since the revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak. Thousands of anti-Morsi protestors have occupied both Tahrir Square and the streets outside the presidential palace calling for two main demands: the revocation of the Nov. 22 decree that Morsi used to grant himself sweeping new powers, and a delay of a Dec. 15 referendum scheduled on a controversial and hastily completed draft constitution. Other (but not all) protesters have been adding a third demand that echoes the Tahrir revolution

Maybe he will do what our ruler does....tell the media/public he will cede to their will, then do exactly what pleases him.

It gives me some hope to know that there are still people in Egypt who are not willing to walk down the road of total submission to the Muslim Brotherhood without a fight.

A dictator never voluntarily surrenders his power permanently. This is a temporary move to keep from bring overthrown. He´ll pretend to retreat, consolidate his power base, identify his enemies, pick them off methodically, then make his move again when he knows he can´t be stopped. This is Dictatorship 101.

My gut tells me (shades of Jethro Gibbs) that morsi is faking the concession -- just like our dear leader does....

Adolph Hitler did the same thing, pretending to concede to democratic rules while continuing to build his strength in the government to take over as dictator. Moving too fast can sometimes get a would-be dictator in trouble. But, once they have the reigns of government, these little episodes and set-backs are a benefit in that they show exactly who the opposition leaders are and where to surgically strike to clean out all corners of resistance. Morsi has only just begun!

If Morsi is not removed from power entirely, he will try this again sooner or later. Once a power-grabber, always a power-grabber.

So that is why perhaps morsi iskeeping his head down.

Once so long ago, my wife and I with the two kids, were vacationing and driving through Spain. We had traveled from Madrid down through Grenada and reached Algeciras on the Mediterranean. It was a time of conflict and the Spanish government was attempting to force the UK to give up control of Gibraltar. It was getting so petty that all road signs giving directions to Gibraltar had been taken down by Spain.

Since we travel by ear, after a few days, we decided to change plans and take the ferry over to Casablanca in Morocco and visit for a few days. When we arrived, we got off of the ferry and entered the customs building. It was divided by a 2x4 fence going down the middle about 4´ high that separated the incoming passengers from those going to Spain on the next boat. There were only 2 windows on each side processing people.

On our side were typical tourists in one single line, leaning against the wall, bored, waiting patiently to enter the country with passports and necessary documents at ready. On the other side of the divided room there was no line, and by that I mean there was a mob of Arabs packed end to end fighting for position to get to the windows. There were arguments and fights breaking out, and general chaos. You could have walked across the room on heads. I got the idea that this went on each and every day and these were people going to work in Spain.

I turned to my wide eyed children and said. Now you know why the Arabs will never defeat the Jews. They are too busy fighting each other to accomplish anything constructive. It hasn´t changed one iota.

The Sunday morning shows once occupied a sacred space in American politics. Today, many influential Washington players can’t even remember the last time they watched. The public affairs shows — “Meet the Press,” “Face the Nation” and “This Week” — used to set the agenda for the nation’s capital with their news-making interviews and immensely influential audience. Now the buzz around the shows is more likely to center on gossipy criticism about the hosts, notably “Meet the Press’s” David Gregory, whose fate has become an incessant subject of conversation, most recently in a Washington Post story on Monday. Last week´s news about Obamacare enrollment was great. But health care policy wonks have something else on their mind now: the cost of health care. It’s starting to rise more quickly than before. That could be a problem. For the last four years or so, national health care expenditures—that is, all the money that Americans spend on medical services and supplies—has been growing at historically low rates. It’s gone up every year, as it almost always does, but only by 3 or 4 percent. That’s just a little bit more than inflation. Typically health care spending has risen more quickly.
