Obama postures as fiscal cliff looms
Power Line, by Paul Mirengoff

Original Article

President Obama said in his radio address today that going over the so-called financial cliff “would be bad for families, it would be bad for businesses, and it would drag down our entire economy.” “Bad all around,” as Sam Spade would say. Most people understand this. The question is, how far will Obama go to avoid “the cliff.” On this question, Obama said that he will not sign a package that does not include a rate increase on wealthy Americans. “That’s one principle I won’t compromise on,” he reiterated. Everyone understands this too. The question is

One principle I won´t yield on either. I don´t care about the fiscal pot-hole, but I won´t allow this country to hurtle toward the abyss of bankruptcy.

Obama has been posturing by raising his middle finger in public photos for the past four years. All of the "posturing" in the world will not create jobs, fairly win an election, or make Obama Constitutionally qualified to be president. When did he become a person of "principle?"

Barack Obama lives by a far different set of "principles" than I do, or I hope most of my fellow americans. He is too willing to put america over the fiscal cliff over just enough money to run the country for about a week. That´s not the tactic of a president, that´s the act of a demigog! For the Senate to follow along like whipped puppies is disgusting. There is no honor in this administration or in its´ slavering lackies in the media.

Barry WANTS the country to go over the cliff with punishing Death Bill taxes, expiration of the Bush tax cuts, and that ridiculous trillion dollar cut to the military. He HAS plans to take all that money and come up with even more wasteful programs.

Reply 5 - Posted by: Spidey, 12/9/2012 6:15:02 AM     (No. 9056073)

Obama caught holy hell from his base the last time he extended the tax cut on the rich, that´s why he´s making that the front and center issue this time around. He flooding the airwaves and internet banners pushing for it.

Obama will cave on this if republicans stick to their guns.Obama can then say he fought as hard as he could but he couldn´t let the country go in a ditch.

Boehners mailbox was burning up last week with people mad about the revenue offers and him punishing tea party members.

Reply 6 - Posted by: retcpo, 12/9/2012 11:27:57 AM     (No. 9056474)

It is apparent to me that the Dems want to eliminate all Federal taxes, Income and Payroll and extend unemployment until they can get them on permanent disability and build enough of a base to ensure their permanet investiture in the halls of power. Eventually they will collect the needed revenue from the rich, those who make over 60K.

So, let us go over the cliff now rather than Mt. Everest later. Raise taxes on everyone as under that wonderful Clinton Era, institute those dreaded automatic cuts and put and end to ruining what is left of Social Security & Meicare and building a permanent unemployed class.

We will soon know if more or less revenue is generated this way or not and make future adjustments accordingly based on results, but everyone but the truly needy needs to participate and this ugly class warfare need to stop.

In this instance we should welcome the cliff.

The Senate’s effective rejection of President Barack Obama’s post-Newtown gun control bill robs the Democratic Party of an important tool for trying to regain a majority in the House in November 2014. “Are they serious?” a visibly angry Obama demanded of opponents of the Toomey/Manchin Senate bill. In a late-afternoon announcement outside the White House, the president added that if Congress continues not to pass a gun control bill, “the answer will have to come from the voters.” But without a Senate bill, there’s little chance

After all the controversy – it was too much, and too expensive; it would be marred by protests – this morning’s funeral for Lady Thatcher in London was a splendid and memorable affair, which did her memory, and her country, proud. It was a moving, dignified and pitch-perfect occasion: unmistakably British, and a fitting send-off for the country’s greatest post-war prime minister. Big Ben fell silent – for the first time since the funeral of wartime leader Winston Churchill – and tens of thousands of admirers lined the streets to applaud Lady Thatcher’s coffin

Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister offered condolences to President Obama Wednesday for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. Prince Saud Al-Faisal made the gesture during a meeting at the White House that included National Security Advisor Tom Donilon. The White House didn’t report Mr. Obama’s response about the Boston tragedy, but said the president asked Mr. Al-Faisal “to convey his best wishes to King Abdullah bin Abd Al-Aziz Al Saud.” Although Saudi Arabia is a longtime ally of the U.S., terrorism is a complicated issue between the two nations

If there was ever a moment that symbolized the difference between the power of public opinion and the strength of a concerted minority, it came Wednesday when the Senate defeated a bipartisan measure to expand background checks on gun purchases. By the time the vote took place, the outcome was expected. Nonetheless, the result was stunning, as was made clear by the angry reaction of President Obama, who had invested so much capital on getting gun legislation passed after the shootings in Newtown, Conn., only to see those efforts crushed

President Obama’s ambitious effort to overhaul the nation’s gun laws in response to December’s school massacre in Connecticut suffered a resounding defeat Wednesday, when every major proposal he championed fell apart on the Senate floor. It was a stunning collapse for gun-control advocates just four months after the deaths of 20 children and six adults in Newtown led the president and many others to believe that the political climate on guns had been altered in their favor. The national drive for laws that might prevent another mass shooting unraveled

President Barack Obama lashed out defiantly and viciously at political opponents who defeated his efforts to expand federal gun regulations today. Standing with families of victims of the Newtown school shooting at the White House, the president claimed that opponents of expanded federal background checks had "no coherent arguments" for their position, and that the "gun lobby" had "willfully lied" in the course of the debate. Ironically, while accusing others of lying, President Obama resorted to false claims and statistics about current laws

The survey considered every city in the country, regardless of size, the company said. Gun control supporters scrambled Tuesday to find 60 votes to pass expanded background checks on firearms purchases, hoping to sway reluctant senators ahead of a showdown vote. The deadly bombs that struck the Boston Marathon on Monday were fashioned from large pressure cookers packed with nails and ball bearings and hidden in black bags on the ground, said FBI investigators and a U.S. official briefed on the investigation. The construction of the devices, which killed at least three and injured more than 170, many of them gravely, showed signs of “training or knowledge,” the official said. A task force of federal, state and local law enforcement authorities ramped up a huge investigation Tuesday, but officials said they had no suspects or motive.

Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes--six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either. Why did the no-brainer bill fail? Four reasons:

Three Americans were killed in Monday´s attack and more than 170 others were injured. "Anytime bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror," Obama said,

While the media are bearing the brunt of public skepticism over the handling of the Boston bombing, the behavior of government is also eroding public trust. Yesterday´s promised but cancelled news briefing is just one symptom. Andrew McCarthy of PJM notes that "Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday´s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon," and that part of it is the natural outgrowth of the desire of investigators to keep the details of their investigations secret, so as not to alert suspects.

It failed to advance in the Senate, with a vote Wednesday afternoon of 54 to 46.

As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.
